Stats for 1982 W Final (Navratilova-Evert)

Moose Malloy

G.O.A.T.
Navratilova d Evert 6-1,3-6,6-2

Navratilova had 34 non service winners: 4 fh, 3 b, 9 fhv, 14 bhv, 4 ov
Evert had 21: 6 fh, 9 bh, 3 fhv, 2 bhv, 1 ov

winners by set:

Martina - 8, 9, 17
Chris - 4, 8, 9

Martina had no aces, 1 double
Chris had no aces, 2 doubles

Chris was 56 of 68 on 1st serves, or 82%
Martina was 50 of 78, or 64%

Chris was 4 for 4 on break points, Martina 7 for 12

Chris had 12 passing shot winners, 1 of them a lob, 3 of them return winners
Martina had 5 passing shot winners, no return winners

Chris had 4 unreturned serves, Martina 10

In their 1987 semifinal they both had really high rates of winners, per NBC. After 17 games, Navratilova had made 32 winners, Evert 30. And their unforced errors were extremely low: 10 by Martina and 8 by Chris.

If Martina only had 7 groundstroke winners and 5 passing shot winners, wouldnt that mean she only had 2 groundstroke winners when both she and Chris were at the baseline together?

I count half-volleys as groundstrokes (since it is a shot that is hit off a bounce)

don't know if that is specifically what happened here though.

I just watched my copy of the NBC coverage (don't know if that was the one you saw, Moose).

Enberg said that Martina came into the final 54-1 for the year. He also said that only 18 players had beaten Evert in the last 12 years.

At 3-2 in the third, Navratilova was winning 61% on first serve, Evert 52%.

I was surprised to see Martina staying back a bit on first serve, at least in the first set. And I don't think she came in directly behind any second serves (though she was winning most of those points).

Found this too in my notes: in the 85 FO final, at love-2 in the third, Martina was winning 77% on first serve and 47% on second.

My copy was from the BBC.

In Martina's book, she said she was too passive in the 2nd set & decided to come in on everything in the 3rd. This is what Renee Richards had been trying to instill in her - always be attacking.

I took net stats on these 2 sets.

She was 12 of 24 in the 2nd set(2 of 10 on S&V pts)

and was 25 of 36 in the 3rd(11 of 17 on S&V pts)

Tremendous difference between those two sets.

I quickly took some stats on the 79W final, just Martina's success on second serve. She won 10 of 25 points (40%). I'm still wondering if there were other matches where that stat was as low as 87W (21%).

CBS at 81 USO: after almost two sets, Martina was winning 58% on first serve and 41% on second. Chris was at 53% and 50%.

The 79W was carried live in Australia, and NBC did the same for the 82W, though they kept cutting to McEnroe's semifinal (which was delayed due to rain).

And on 79W, she didn't come in directly behind second serves, except three times. Instead she tried to work her way in on approach shots, but she won at least a few of those points (on second serve) entirely from the baseline.

they played the mens semi the same time as the womens final that year? wow.
in recent years they would never do that(I remember the '99 & '01 womens finals were postponed to Sunday because the mens semis were not completed on Friday)

how much of Mac's match did they show?

any idea on the winner counts for that one?

maybe the '88 W final? or that match she lost 6-0, 6-0 to Evert in '81?

They only showed a handful of points of Mac-Mayotte.

No real idea about the 79W winners, didn't seem like an unusual number overall.

I'm looking for low success on second serve for the winner of a match. Can't recall ever seeing a stat that low. Come to think of it, right now I can't think of any time even the loser went below 20%, though I think we've seen some numbers in the 20s and 30s.
