net pts
Wilander 39 of 53(73%) he was 26 of 33 on S&V attempts(79%)
Lendl 20 of 42(48%) he was 12 of 29 on S&V attempts(41%)

Lendl S&Ved 23 times in the 3rd set, many times even on 2nd serve after hardly coming in at all in the first 2 sets.

His body language in the 3rd set was among the worst I've ever seen, constantly throwing up his hands or shaking his head when Mats hit a winner. also his effort in returning some of Mats' aces was a bit suspect(there were two 2nd serve aces in that set, that looked like Lendl easily could have gotten a racquet on)
and some passing shot winners by mats that lendl made no effort on as well. commentators said he was acting like the match was over throughout the set.

During the trophy presentation lendl said he wouldn't be back the next year(surprisingly no boos or whistles when he said that. I guess fans at that time knew how unusual it was for top players to play this event)

Looks like Wilander played solid and Lendl had an off day! 6 df's and 25 UE's is not a championship level of play, especially in only 3 sets.

This was one of seven times that Lendl was defeated in three straight sets while ranked #1, per the rankings listed at the ATP site:

1983 Australian Open final to Wilander
1984 (January) Masters final to McEnroe
1986 Wimbledon final to Becker
1987 Lipton final to Mecir
1987 Wimbledon final to Cash
1988 Roland Garros fourth-round match to Svensson
1990 Wimbledon SF to Edberg

4 of the 7 were on grass.

That's the lowest service percentage I can recall seeing anywhere.

Moose what do you have for them by set? The Aussie TV network had Lendl at only 21% in the first set. Toward the end of the second set he was up to 34%, and by the end of the match they had him at 42%. So it seems Lendl's percentage was improving as the match went on.

Some other low percentages that I marked down (all Slam finals):

Lendl at 1988 USO (42.47%) (lost to Wilander)
Lendl at 1985 RG (42.7%) (lost to Wilander)
Orantes at 1975 USO (44%)
Stich at 1991 W (46.0%)
Becker at 1989 W (46.15%)
Curren at 1985 W (46.3%)
Borg at 1980 USO (47.3%)
Safin at 2000 USO (48.8%)

Yeah he started acting openly like a defeated man. It was weird, he was joking oncourt with Wilander about how he was ready to throw in the towel, but he did it after his own errors. As if he was fighting himself as much as Wilander.

He berated himself for losing concentration; he looked at times like wasn't moving his feet; he took his eye of the ball -- and made errors for all these reasons. It looked like he was playing scared; and he stopped hitting the ball with any purpose or plan.

He lost two other Slam finals to Wilander, and if you compare them you can see how he matured over the years. He essentially gives up in this match; then at Roland Garros in 1985, he does not give up to Wilander, but he is clearly affected by discouragement; and finally when he lost to Wilander in New York in '88, he neither gave up nor let any internal discouragement prevent him from fighting to the death.

Fish was at 34% in a win over Federer at '08 IW

Moose what do you have for them by set?

Lendl: 18, 42, 51
Wilander: 54.5, 47, 57

Lendl at 1985 RG (42.7%) (lost to Wilander)

wasn't Lendl in the 40s vs Connors in both USO finals?

Interesting stats, you can see Lendl did try to get aggressive in the third set even if he was hardly successful at it.

And I knew Wilander was doing well at net but almost 80% is impressive.

so Lendl served below 50% in 4 GS finals. wow.
And it could be 5 depending on his final percentage at 87 RG; NBC had him at 49% after two sets (that was actually one of his better percentages against Wilander; he had 50% later in their USO final that year, and of course he won both matches).

Other than the 87RG, and the Pernfors final, we've got his full service percentages for all his finals, either from published stats or our own counts. I've got no data at all on the Pernfors match.

guess I should finish the finals he played, seems like we have done most of them.
Last year I actually did the 89AO. So I'll post that when I have a chance.

Lendl missed 11 straight first serves in the opening set here. Wilander did not miss any returns in that set (though he did get aced twice), which may be surprising on grass except for the fact that Lendl made only 18% of his first serves. And Lendl wasn't following his second serves to net, so Wilander had no pressure returning serve.

Question for any Aussies or those in the know, was the Aussie Open played in a cricket stadium back then?
