Per the New York Times and San Jose Mercury News, Graf had 5 aces and 12 service winners.

Moose, you've got Graf hitting 13 serves that Martina got a racquet on but could not return, so the published service winners look like a count of all the return errors.

Martina had 20 unreturned serves, of which I judged 1 to be a service winner.
Graf had 13 unreturned serves, of which I judged 3 to be service winners.
Here's a large edge for Martina; I remember a lot of swinging serves that drew errors from Graf's backhand.

It's an edge of 7 points for Martina, though Graf made it all up in clean aces/winners; per your count she led Martina by 7 in those.

In their 1989 final, after 21 games NBC had Navratilova at 27 winners, Graf at 30, very comparable to 1987.

So Graf's rate of 2 winners per game in 1988 was unusual. That year most of the winners went to her; Martina was down at a rate of about .75 per game, including aces, well below what she did the other two years.

Steffi definitely wasnt in her prime in 1987. She was a much stronger player by 1988. She also played extremely poor finals at both Wimbledon and the U.S Open vs Martina that year. Nerves maybe.

I remember 1987 being a particularly bad year for the condition of the grass during the second week. Which makes the quality of play from Evert and Graf that much more impressive.

There was also a lot of attention given to Chris being sent out to an outside court twice for the 4R and QF (back then all players were required to play on an outside court at least once), but given the condition of the grass on Center Court that might not have been a bad thing.

some more stats:

Graf
points won on 1st serve: 33-46(72%)
points won on 2nd: 9-19((47%)
she won 63 pts overall

Martina
points won on 1st: 37-50(64%)
points won on 2nd: 10-18(55%)
she won 70 pts overall

I gave Graf 12 unforced errors, Martina 11

Martina was 2 of 9(8 of these were in the 1st set) on break points, Graf was 0-1.

Graf made her 1st serve on 7 of 9 break points. Martina made her 1st serve on the only break point she faced.

Graf lost only 6 pts on serve in the 2nd set(4 games)

Martina had 20 unreturned serves, of which I judged 1 to be a service winner.
Graf had 13 unreturned serves, of which I judged 3 to be service winners.

5 of Martina's 20 unreturned served were 2nd serves. Graf took 16 of those serves off the bh.

2 of Graf's 13 unreturned serves were 2nd serves. Martina took 7 of them off the bh.

Graf saved 7 of 9 break points, all with forceful shots: a BH putaway up at net, three unreturned serves to the FH (2 of them service winners in my judgment), an ace, a FH pass and a BH pass.

At 4-5 in the first set Graf held from love-40 down, making all 12 of her first serves – part of a run of 14 straight. She saved 3 set points in that game, and another 3 in the next game (but she was broken in that game -- in which she made her only double-fault of the match).

Graf made her 1st serve on 7 of 9 break points.
She was broken once on first serve and once on second. Both times that Graf missed her first serve on break point, Martina charged in behind forehand returns (Martina won the second of the two attempts).

Martina made her 1st serve on the only break point she faced.
She saved it with a hook that drew an error, in the opening game of the second set.

Navratilova served on 68 points and 21 serves did not come back: 30.9%
Graf served on 65 points and 18 serves did not come back: 27.7%

I always thought of this as a close match -- just about as close as a two-setter can be.

Are you the user on Youtube who had some vintage tennis highlights?
