Sampras d. Agassi 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5

The ATP has included the aces and double-faults twice in the Total Points Won, and they're also off slightly on the break points.

My counts agree instead with the boxscore below, which appeared in (at least) the St. Petersburg Times and the Salt Lake Tribune:

Date: September 11, 1995

NEW YORK -- Statistics from No. 2 Pete Sampras’ 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over No. 1 Andre Agassi for the men’s singles championship of the U.S. Open Sunday:
Sampras Agassi
Total Points Won 124 112
Aces 24 8
Double Faults 6 5
1st Serve Percentage 54 56
Pct. 1st Serve Points Won 86 70
Pct. 2nd Serve Points Won 54 63
Break Point Conversions 4-8 2-6
Winners (including service) 60 33
Unforced Errors 40 33
Net approaches 43-59 13-20
Time of match 2:28

The following are my own stats.

Sampras won 124 points overall, Agassi 112.

SERVICE

Sampras won 86 of 121 points on serve, Agassi 77 of 115.

Agassi won 11 straight points to start the match and another 11 in the fourth – when Sampras had his own run of 12 straight.

Per Steve Flink's The Greatest Matches of the Twentieth Century, Sampras won 16 of his last 17 points on serve; I have the same.

Sampras served at 53.7%, making 65 of 121 first serves.

Agassi served at 55.7%, making 64 of 115 first serves.

Sampras’ first-serve percentages by set:
18/28 (64%)
18/36 (50%)
12/28 (43%)
17/29 (59%)

Agassi’s first-serve percentages by set:
16/26 (62%)
14/27 (52%)
14/27 (52%)
20/35 (57%)

(CBS gave Pete's service percentages for the first three sets and had the same figures as mine. Their midmatch figures for Andre also matched mine.)

Sampras served 6 more points than Agassi, because he served one more game.

Sampras converted 4 of 8 break points, same as in the boxscore. The ATP has him at 4 of 7.

Agassi converted 2 of 6 break points.

Sampras got his first serve into play on 5 of 6 break points. Both times he was broken it was on first serve. He held 11 straight times to open the match and was broken only in the third set (twice). He faced no break points in the fourth set.

Agassi got his first serve into play on 6 of 8 break points. He was broken twice on first serve and twice on second. He was broken once in each set.

Sampras had 24 aces and 6 df's.
Agassi had 8 aces and 5 df's.

Pete's aces by set: 1, 9, 3, 11
Andre's aces by set: 2, 1, 2, 3

Per Flink, Sampras served 11 of his 24 aces in the fourth set, and hit 8 aces in his last four service games (all in line with my counts). In the first of those games he actually hit 4 aces to hold at love.

Sampras drew 33 return errors (12 with second serves). Agassi drew 21 return errors (8 with second serves). Out of all these serves I gave Sampras 6 service winners, Agassi 1.

WINNERS

Sampras hit 28 clean winners: 9 FH, 4 BH, 8 FHV, 5 BHV, 2 OH.

Agassi hit 23 clean winners: 11 FH, 8 BH, 1 FHV, 1 BHV, 2 OH.

Pete's winners by set: 8, 6, 8, 6,
Andre's winners by set: 4, 6, 8, 5

Sampras had 1 return winner, a FH off a first serve. It was not a pass but he had 2 FH passing shots.

Agassi, incredibly, had no return winners. He did make 6 passing shots, three from each side.

(At 4-all in the third, CBS had Sampras winning 30 of 41 net approaches, Agassi 11 of 17.)

ERRORS

These are forced and unforced errors combined; I got the totals by subtracting winners and aces from the total points won.

Sampras made 81 total errors. Of those I counted 6 double-faults and 21 return errors. That leaves 54 errors that he made in actual rallies (a rally consisting of at least a successful return of serve).

Agassi made 72 total errors. Of those I counted 5 double-faults and 33 return errors. That leaves 34 errors that he made in actual rallies.

Sampras is too powerful for Agassi. He hits the ball too hard. Agassi could never beat Sampras if both were playing at their best. Mary Carillo said that right before the match. Her words I think were "Agassi needs Sampras to be off today to win. If Sampras plays his best he will win his 3rd U.S Open title." That was even though Agassi had such a dominant summer.

Stats from two quarterfinals

Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Sampras beat Byron Black 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-0 behind 22 aces and 59 winners.

Becker had 14 double faults, fired 30 aces and hit 101 winners against 70 unforced errors. McEnroe had five aces, three double faults and 56 winners. ...

The score of Becker's match was 6-4, 7-6(2), 6-7(3), 7-6(6).

That's the third time I've seen Becker breaking the century mark in winners. He was credited with 100 against Lendl at the 1989 Wimbledon, and 102 against Agassi in Davis Cup a few weeks later.
