Steffi still so great

Warrior,

I was going to ask you.

How does the face of the racquet she is using now compare to the face in square inches of the racquet she used before she retired?

It is bigger, isn't it?

Yes it is, I still play with the racket she retired with (The black Wilson), and if I compare it to the new rackets (the younger players play with at my club), I have to work that much harder to generate the same power. Therefore I think her hitting looks a bit different, looks easier (I prefer her with the Black Wilson). I noticed that already at the Wimbledon 2010 opening.

She hits great, with pace, and the most important, doesn't 'moan', yell or shout like the annoying player on the other side, that's the beauty in my opinion.

It's not her strokes I'm in awe of..it's her feet. Her footwork is still great. And yeah...I'm not a fan of all the moaning and grunting coming from the other side of the net.

I know this is totally sexist but do you ever wonder if the same players who scream after every stroke while on the court, well uhmm....., do you think they are just as vocal at other certain times when off the court :)

Strange, i've never known Petkovic for a screamer, she used to be quiet during play.

EDIT: Just checked, pre-2010 she was reasonably quiet, it's only during the last year her screaming became so annoying.

Incredible, isn't it? I've often thought that if you want to see world-class disciplined footwork, you watch Connors; if you want to see world-class speed, you watch Borg; and if you want to see both, it's gotta be Graf.

I watched a practice session of hers in Tokyo in the mid-90's, and the thing that really struck me was that while most players would move their feet during a drill/rally and walk around between, Graf's feet never stopped moving until the entire practice session was done. It was really something to see.

I've never watched her practice live only play tournament matches, but I'm just so AMAZED that she's still moving like in her early 40s. Did you see that one forehand she cracked off of a wide shot from Petkovic to the forehand side? I thought for sure she (Steffi) was going to either miss it or dump it in the net and she got to it and still managed to drill it up the line.

I don't think anybody can say but what racquet is that in the vid? Novak's stick (which probably isn't even what he is using) or a PJ? It seems much bigger and specs say it's much stiffer than what she used to play.

better footwork than 99% of WTA today!
Have you seen Mac today? He's like 51 and can still move pretty well so there not a problem for a 40 yrs old Graf. She may not have the same stamina as before but she's in great shape. You make it sound like she's all washed up. I think she's better mover than Serena !

Incidentally that is when her game improved, as well.
Love Petkovic, really love Graf. Thanks to the OP for sharing!

Footwork yes. And why not? Just watch her hitting lately, she look no different from the 90s. She's in great shape.

Had you ask if it's stamina/endurance then no, but what do you expect from a 40 yrs old Graf. However, I think she has better stamina than Serena, who's over 10 years younger.

I didnt ask anything!. Just gave her credit for her great footwork. Most players at her age will have crappy footwork/movement compared to when they played on tour.
Her footwork is close to perfect.
