Even people who are ostensibly discussing with an adversary are in all probably simply demonstrating to the group that they belong to the consensus omnium.

But all is not lost for the simple reason that discussion always fared better in small circles of people who are already shared a lot in common. That is not the internet or social media.

The two studies mentioned in the article don't necessarily confirm that discussions and even facts don't change opinions.

They simply show that people don't change their opinions as quickly as they should even after they get to know the facts.
But my eye test tells me that repeated exposure to discussion and facts do make most of the people change their opinions.

So in my opinion(which you are not gonna change btw) discussion isn't futile.
It's the way we grow.

Yeah, it takes me back to the Golden Age of animated cartoons (at least in the US). The kings of this golden age were voice guys like Mel Blanc (the man with a thousand voices from Waner Bros & more), Daws Butler (Hanna Barbera) and the various voices for Jay Ward Productions (Rocky, Bullwinkle, Boris & Natasha, Snidely Whiplash, Mr Peabody & Sherman, Duddly Do-Right etc). As I recall, the cartoons of the 1980s were pretty dismal -- did not have the voices, creativity and character of the previous Blanc-Butler-(Ward) era. (The 90s brought new life to cartoon voices & creativity with shows like The Simpsons).

Dying isn't something you get to know about the first time. It is well accepted that people die. It has got nothing to do with the studies linked in the OP. So this comparison is stupid sorry to say.

I think that it's best to have a fact-based mind if you're concerned about the implications of a fact (ie, the implication that people believe something is bad even when you're not sure they're true).

But this is also true of a lot of people, including my grandchildren. I'm still very suspicious that people on TW are being so negative. But I think it's better to be skeptical about it than to be skeptical about a fact.
