Stop the Press: Zederer betterer than Federer on Grass in 2017

Hohohohahahhohoho

Zverev's Wimbledon pre tournament interview: "You guys know why I am here don't you? There is a certain Mr. Federer waiting for me in the quarter final. I'm sure you guys know what happened in Halle. Don't even think about it. Hate those dang dropshots"

Lol Meles and his stats. According to his stats during the clay season Zverev was a servebot. Great servebot, losing 1 and 3 on fast grass.

Never stop making awesome threads, @Meles !

Promise? ;)
Well I had to make this with Zed's awesome improvement in the stats on clay and grass and his great play at Halle. This match deserved the hype. A Djokovic v. Thiem Rome moment for sure with Sascha clearly playing Thiem's part. Fed fortunately is not in the midst of a horrible year so doubt Zverev will be able to turn the tables at Wimby like Thiem did at RG.;) I did make a point of showing Fed's nice improvement and credible return game this year and he sure delivered on that front against Z. Errah he seems to have fixed his serve a bit for the final to boot so he's looking very good for Wimby very much like Nadal heading into RG.:p

Good save ;) :P

Just one match after two tough three setters. Did you see his final hold at love?o_O That was the Zverev on display this week. Zed's future is assured very nicely with his jump in stats on both clay and grass this year.:p

You sensed how Federer was aware of that, and just decided to take the final game into his own hands, after Zed took the first point aggressively. I love how Federer can up his game and vary so much, even on grass. Great diversity.

May have been tired, all the doubles matches etc...I think Federer did a good job disrupting his rhyme though.
He did what Gasquet did in spades to trouble Zverev mixing it up a lot with the junk balls and then sudden pace at other moments. Zverev came out a bit off his game like in RBA and Gasquet matches and Fed took full advantage. Zverev never got going in the match except for his last service hold. Brilliant match from Fed keeping him ice cold most of the way.:p

I dont know which of OPs thread are more meaningless. Thiem's or Zed's.

At least the OP uses stats to back up his ideas. Most of the posters here are slaves of their emotions and fan biases.

That said, today's result was pretty predictable. Zverev was gassed from two straight 3-set matches and was up against a Titan today. Prime Sampras would have been the only person who could have stopped Fed today. And that's not even a certainty.

Thats a healthy thing to do. To have trust in your hero regardless of stats means something.

Fan bias won today even though stats said Z was 2-0 against Fed.

LOL @ this thread @Meles! It's time to take your over-reliance on stats and start looking at some other things to try and analyze match results correctly! You are a stats nerd!

Cheers, Meles :p You keep jinxing yourself with these threads and you're gonna be batting .000 for predictions. Might just be relegated to the 90sClay/sureshs tier of fortune telling :D

It's been revenge of the geriatrics on grass. If Pouille hadn't snagged Stuttgart it would be a clean sweep on grass for 34 years old and up.

Somehow despite my NextGen predelictions, I defended my prediction league title at Queen's Club and have held onto my number one ranking in Power Play League. Thiem and Zverev last year almost carried me to an unprecedented sweep of both leagues on grass, but my predeliction for Berdy bashing cost me Wimbledon in prediction league.

Honored to be included with 90sMug and @sureshs who was suggesting early retirement for Fed over ten years ago after his first loss to Canas at IW in 2007. Sureshs and I are opposites on Fed as I've been pumping Grandpaerer and his hard court stats from early on in my posting at TTW. The Federeristas were none to happy with my predicting his deep run at Auz when the draw came out this year.;)

It's true though. You crap stats out your arse like nobody else but rarely combine the implications of the stats with the myriad of factors that go into winning and losing tennis matches. By penetrating stats so deeply so much with your giant stats dick, you end up losing all reasonable intuition and become lazy by (at least giving the impression of) using stats as a bible and almost absolute crux of your forecasts/predictions/whatever the dayum fook they should be called.

Melesmatic to the max.

I know, I'm just funnin' ya. Truthfully, I do enjoy you trying to moneyball your way through tennis analysis with these threads but sometimes you gotta go with the eye test, ya know.

Meles is always a class act though, he'll take it on the chin. :D I like my stats as well, but there are many layers to predicting matches.

Though at times, I don't even think Meles believes some of the stuff he posts. He's not that bad at picking winners lol...

He definitely doesn't. He's a fan of playing devil's advocate but by the same token he does genuinely get ahead of himself because he's clamouring for that super hot and sexy next-gen takeover.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Updated for Halle 2017.

Stats RF - AZ

Sets 10/0 - 8/4

Hold% 94 - 89 (3 breaks vs 6)
Break% 32 - 21

%SPW 73 - 72
%RPW 42 - 37
%
PW 57 - 54

MdnOpp 38 - 30
Zverev obviously needs to improve his return game. I'm surprised his break percentage is so crappy.
If he could get this to 30% he will start bringing home hardware.

20% is fine. This means breaking once per set, which should be enough to win most matches. And indeed in this tournament he won 4/5!

That's assuming that he doesn't ever get broken himself.

Of course it is good enough to win matches but if you look at dominant players on tour, the break percentage is always the key variable. I think Djokovic was breaking like 40% of the time or something insane when playing his best during the 2011 streak.

I think we can put to bed any talk of Z going deep at Wimbledon this year. Fed absolutely eviscerated him in Halle and exposed all his weaknesses. I was particularly unimpressed with his BH, which Fed feasted upon.

Yeah fair it's not best-in-class.

Keep in mind it's harder to break on grass. He's a respectable top 20 on tour with a 26% break rate in last year

Fed was in full flight in that match. Zverev stood no chance.

Then again, look at what Djokovic did to Thiem in Rome and see how things turned around at the FO.
Tennis is a crazy sport. That's what makes it interesting.

Zverev has had a history of falling flat this year and was due after two three set matches. Federer really kept him from getting into the match until it was far too late. Hopefully he gets out of the gates well at Wimby and we can see him finally with a deepish run at major (QF at least.)

Believe me I'm trying to understand the story and conditions on grass this year.:p

Luckily for Zed, he will be a pretty high seed for the first time, so he might play mugs the first 3 rounds and beat his PB.
