Streak of reaching at least one Grand Slam semi in last 2 Grand Slams - Big 3 and Sampras

With his loss today, Djokovic failed to make the semifinals of a Grand Slam in the last 2 Grand Slams. I was wondering what is the longest streak of the Big 3 and Sampras reaching at least one Grand Slam semi in the last 2 Grand Slams.

Sampras - 1992 Wimbledon to 1998 Australian Open
Federer - 2003 Wimbledon to 2010 Wimbledon
Nadal - 2007 French Open to 2015 Australian Open (played in, of course he skipped 4 Grand Slams)
Djokovic - 2010 Wimbledon to 2017 French Open

For all of the players, failing to make the semifinals in consecutive Grand Slams is a clear demarcation of the end of their Grand Slam peak.

What's that of kind of very arbitrary streak? Without looking at the results posted by OP, I can already guess Djokovic wins this. Djokofans excell at this.

Arbitrary is putting it lightly..

It's a bit like Messi fans creating that 'record' a few years ago of the most goals scored in a calendar year, if you also include international matches, friendlies, and goals scored while playing FIFA on the PS3.

He doesn't need to create arbitrary records. He already scored the most goals / assists ever in a season, and has more goals + assists than Ronaldo since they've both been playing in Spain.

Federer wins by a slam. Nadal does not count due to skipped slams.

Not that it matters. If you want to look at slam consistency, there are other ways and Federer wins those too! 18/19 slam finals should stand the test of time.

I see what you did there..
Yep! You have to compare them from when they both started playing in Spain to be fair I think.

There's still not even much in it. Both won 4 CL. 5>4 Balon d'Or. Similar goals/assists (tho Messi has better stats here slightly and better ratios), Messi has more league titles + cups. Ronaldo has the Euros win vs 3 RU + Olympics singles gold one for Nadal fans).

This latest CL doesn't seal the deal, Messi will be back.

Goals in competitive and friendly international games have always been part of the official count. Every big player has a slightly inflated number because of that, it didn't start few years ago just so Messi could have the record.

Your opinion on Ronaldo has done it in England too argument?

Nice touch with the Olympic medal. :D

I don't think it's a "done it in England" more like a "done it in more than one country" argument. None of Pele, Maradona, Zidane etc played in England for example. And yes I think it's a credit to Ronaldo that he was brilliant in the PL and has evolved into this goal scoring machine.

Thought you'd like the gold medal comment haha :D

Lendl - 1982 US to 1992 French (if missed Slams not counted 1991 Wimbledon)

Connors - 1974 Australian to 1983 Wimbledon (tons of missed Slams, not abnormal back than)

McEnroe - 1978 US to 1987 French (many missed)

Borg - 1975 French to... well technically I suppose it's ongoing:cool:

Lendl, Mac (and Borg, untechnically) won 0 titles afterwards and Connors won 1

Sampras went on to win 3 more majors. Federer won 2. Nadal could win 1. We'll see where Djokovic lands. I'd expect 1 or 2.

Sampras 4

I think you're on to something with this -

Sampras 4

In that case, Sampras was either a post-peak god or had a blip in performance. Had he won one more match at the Australian, his streak would've continued on until the 2001 French, if you exclude events he didn't attend like the OP did. (Otherwise it stops in at the 1999 French since he didn't attend the Australian that year.)

Funnily enough, this count is less fair to Sampras than the other players, since his clay court results will always count against him here, meaning he has to get to the semis of the Australian every year to maintain a streak, where the others can randomly flub any random tounament and make it up at any of the other 3. Sampras doesn't have that luxury.

For Federer, it was a bit of a blip too since had he won one more match at either Wimbledon or the French, he would've continued on until 2013 Wimbledon. And for Djokovic, we'll see in the coming years whether this was a bit of a blip for him or a signal of the end.

It seems though, if you don't miss slams, the best chance you have of having a large streak is to be a baseliner. Lendl and Connors had crazy streaks. McEnroe had a good one by skipping the Australian and having the US and Wimbledon to fall back on.
