String Pattern and String Options

First and foremost, I believe you are the one who produces the spin, not specifically the string. I use a 13' APD with 6g lead at 3 and 9, an additional 3 under the cap. I am a baseliner with heavy spin.

With that being said, and comparing string patterns, do you find using round poly strings produce better spin for you vs textured polys in an open pattern (16x19), do to the fact the strings have more room to move and snap back?

I always use textured strings, love them, but may start to use some round strings to see if there is a difference.

In turn, with more of a close pattern racquet, would textured strings be a better option with less room to move?

I understand it's all preference, I just want to get a feel to what other people feel work the best for them.

Thanks.

I don't think I understand what you're asking. What do you mean less room to move? The main strings will always move together, so it doesn't really matter how much "room" there in the racquet face. Open patterns just tend to produce more spin because they can sink deeper into the ball during dwell time.

I think you have the right idea. Super open string patterns, it has been mentioned, do well with round strings. I know from personal experience that in a basic open pattern, the textured co-poly is much better for generating spin.

I believe that across the board of string patterns, a round poly has the "potential" to generate the most spin. As you stated earlier, spin is all in how you swing. If you swing flat, no string will give you spin.

Spin is created from strings snapping back into place, therefore a smaller amount of friction will increase the speed with which the strings snap back. Textured strings such as ALU Power Rough or BHBR and edged strings like Black Widow and Lux Savage have a greater amount of friction than do round strings.

One factor you do have to look at is the stiffness of the strings you are comparing because strictly stating round is better doesn't mean a fairly soft round poly will help you generate more spin than a stiffer textured string. When comparing poly's of same stiffness, the round string is better in all string patterns. (my opinion of course, which has been through testing and playing a wide variety of polyesters)

For me, shaped poly main strings seemed to produce more spin in traditional patterns. In the newer very open patterned frames, round smooth polys seem to produce the most spin.

I think twisted strings like Cyclone 18 produce the best spin in the long term[short term too] because for whatever the reason the twisted shape reduces notching.

If you're a string breaker, I'd put a fatter gauge in the mains.

Have you ever compared Black Widow to Pro Line 2? BW will produce more spin. You have to ask yourself- Why would manufacturers produce shaped polys?

Why would they write titanium, gel, shock, t-force x5000, etc. on the sides of racquets? Follow the mooooney! Also, when can I expect to see shaped gut?

People create shaped poly's because that is what everyone thinks will create more spin and by the time Wilson proved it otherwise, everyone had it in their mind that edges give you spin. I have tried Black Widow and Pro Line 2 and found that the stiffer round string was better at controlling the spin, not the sharp Black Widow.

On the Wilson note, they also demonstrated the Pure Drive has a greater spin potential than the AeroPro Drive, not the other way around as everyone believes.
