String questions

I see a lot of people hybriding these days but I still don't understand it.

Take for example, Champion's Choice, ALU Power Rough and Natural Gut. You can do poly mains with gut crosses or the other way and I've heard that the feeling is different.

However what is the actual impact of stringing one way or the other? I always though mains contributed to the spin so the poly in mains would achieve best spin and crosses contribute to power.
Federer however uses gut mains, and I cannot understand this setup. More precisely how do you get the benefit of poly on crosses? They dont exactly brush the ball perpendicularly.

Also a question on poly at low tension. If I were to string an n90 with Blackcode at 50, would this be acceptable?

Firstly, after using Blackcode pretty extensively I have to say that it shouldn't be strung at too low of a tension like other polyester strings. Keep it a few lbs at most under where you'd string a synthetic gut. I string synthetic in the 60-61 lbs range and found the best performance from BC at the 57 lbs tension mark.

As for hybrids, the general consensus is that whatever string is in the main will give the most noticeable attributes to the string job as a whole. Let's take a look at a hybrid of Luxilon/gut for example and then a hybrid of gut/Luxilon. The Luxilon/gut hybrid is going to be lower powered, more spin friendly, and have less feel. The gut/Luxilon hybrid on the other hand is going to have more power, less spin, and more feel. The string in the crosses definitely adds attributes to the string job, but to a lesser extent then if it were in the mains. I'm a hard hitter that uses lots of spin and NEED margin to keep the ball in play so I largely prefer the polyester in the main since it's spin oriented properties are going to shine. The gut in the crosses will soften the stringbed and give feel as well as added power when compared to a full polyester string job.

Hope I helped.
