String setup for Yonex Ezone DR 98

Hi,
I have been playing with a hybrid setup ( ALU Rough Mains @48lbs, Babolat Excel @52lbs) for the last 15-16 hours. However I think that the bite is no longer the same and maybe it's time to restring.

What setup would you recommend for more feel and spin?

I am interested in this question as well. I had been using a hybrid of Volkl Cyclone Tour poly mains, usually 53 or 54, and then some synthetic gut cross (Head, etc), usually 56 or so. Have been trying all poly for the past few weeks. Also using the DR98, and have arm / wrist issues. Have been trying the all poly at 46 or so. Topspin forehand is better, slice is worse. Would not mind going back to the hybrid if I could find a set-up that is comfortable enough, and that I could jump on the forehand. Being able to hit an inside out down the line topspin forehand swinging all out is the goal. Can do it will all poly, iffy with the hybrid. I found the Cyclone Tour is not all that spinny when using all poly, so maybe need to try a different poly main, or drop some tension. Big hitter, so I need some control, but can't handle really stiff frame or string.

Being able to hit an inside out down the line
Not sure you quite understand what inside out means... an inside out shot goes cross court, like a righty standing in the ad side hitting a forehand to the ad side.

Regardless though, I think a gut/poly hybrid would suit both of y'all well, like what zettavaska said. If you're worried about control, bump up the tension of the gut mains, then use a round, control-oriented cross string; Luxilon 4G or Kirschbaum Max Power for the most control and best playability, Isospeed Cream for a little more comfortable setup. Wilson Revolve, MSV Co-Focus, and Tecnifibre Pro Red Code Wax are other good options to maximize spin potential.

Yep Bagel, that's what I meant, but not as extreme as your example. Singles, center mark of the singes court, but then bombing a lefty forehand back to my forehand side singles corner. With my traditional hybrid, I can blast cross court, but with all poly, I can also have that slight inside out big forehand that is hit hard and low, but still dips enough to stay in. Not a traditional down the line shot, but back to that singles corner. I was just reading about Isospeed Cream you mentioned. Was wondering about it as an all poly set-up. For sure it would be something to try as a hybrid. Thanks for the info. Think I will order some.

Friday I strung my DR98’s with Klip Legend Natural Gut 16 in the mains (54) and Yonex Poly Tour Pro 17 (yellow) in the crosses (51). Over the weekend I hit with a pro plus played doubles and singles matches...with this set-up I experienced a great mix of control, spin and touch. The VS Touch / RPM Blast I had in before was okay, but the YPTP makes for a much softer feel. I’ve been having problems with my arm and the Klip/Yonex was much easier on it.

Update: I went for a hybrid of Weiss Cannon Ultra Cable @56lbs/Isospeed Cream @53lbs in the racquet and it's playing wonderfully for the last 2 weeks.

Hello, I am also wondering what kind of string would help me.
I used YPTP 16g at 55 pounds which I hated.
I used Volkl Cyclone at 49 pounds which I kinda liked but hurt my arm.
I tried Mantis Comfort at 52 pounds which I liked the spin and control but made my arm go numb after a while.
I now use Wilson NXT at 52 pounds which is ideal for my 2-3h sessions. It doesn't make my arm feel numb at all and I kinda like the power, but it has no spin and control.
Overall I liked Mantis Comfort at 52 pounds in the spin and control departments, and liked NXT in the power and Comfort departments.
Ideally I am looking for a stringjob that would provide both with main focus on the comfort levels.
Is this achievable by going hybrid, or would I lose so much comfort and have my hand go numb after a while by using a hybrid, so that I won't be able to complete the sessions?
Or would using a thin poly like Cyclone tour 17g at let's say 42 pounds improve the feel so much, with maintaining spin and control levels?
Thanks a lot in advance

2 options you can look at, that I use on my racquets

1 multi.mains/poly.cross
2 full bed poly at low tensions

I am currently trying/demoing the y.e-dr.98 (blue) 50/48lbs
I have 17gpolymains/18gpoly.crosses

the tensions I choose are based on the strings I select and/or the tensions I typically need for my game/control/power
btw, yonex suggests stringing the crosses a few lbs lower than mains,

Hi Poseidon! Welcome to the boards!!

My current set up with the DR98 is Solinco Revolution (55lbs) mains and Yonex Poly Tour Fire at (53lbs) crosses and that's been a nice smooth transition for me from full bed poly. To me I get more spin from the revolution due to the slippery cross and the comfort is a lot better.

What you could do though is use the Cyclone that you liked at around 48-50 lbs and use Alpha Gut 17 or Technifibre Multifeel on the crosses at the 46-48lb range. It would be ideal for the spin/control level you are looking for but also add some comfort.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask, I've played with a lot of different configurations in this specific racket and could hopefully help you out better.

Thanks a lot for the answers. Since comfort is my major concern I will try a hybrid setup first with NXT at 54 and Cyclone or some other poly at 50.
If that is up to my standards on comfort, I will keep experimenting more with different tensions on the crosses/mains, or even go full poly and try something like 50/48 or even 48/46 if I feel I need more spin in my game.

Sorry but i dont really understand all those questions about soft strings for the already soft dr 98 which must be the softest racquet i ever played with except wooden racquets 40 years ago. If you use those soft strings than you wont feel the ball anymore. How could one play tennis like that? Furthermore the dr 98 is quite powerfull itself, so spinfriendly strings are a more obvious choice to control the power.

Well, the feel is not necessarily inversely proportional to the softness of the string. I played full-bed gut in DR 98 and the feel is exceptional, almost magical (however, string movement is a big issue).

I feel the same way playing fb VS Touch 16 @ 57/55. Recently I crossed with Velocity 16 @ 57/54 and it helped with string movement, spin and taming power of fb gut, but lost some crispness. Going back and forth on which I prefer. Both set-ups have really helped with TE from earlier this year.

try lowering the crosses a few lbs
lowering the crosses a few lbs does a few things:
1-allows main strings to move a bit more and come back to center, "snapback",,
2-it creates a softer landing for the ball; "control" with the mains, "feel" with the crosses;

plus imo (make sense to me; yonex suggested "rumor"), that lowering the crosses helps the racquet in proportional frame pressure, where there are more short tight crosses that mains to counter the pressure
makes more sense on a rectangular shape racquet than a more round/oval shape racquet

@LoanStar for TE, try to focus a bit more on the BALANCE point of your racquet/s
the more head light your racquet is, the less pressure your arm will feel when you are swinging
the strings do play a role in TE, but not as big as BALANCE, imo/ime

signum pro poly plasma in crosses is the best. If you want comfort, jus go gut/poly all the way. Why pay close to $20 for nxt when you can get gut for $30. If you do hybrid, it equates to only about $5 more per setup... plus the spin potential of gut/poly is way better than most setups other than full poly.

tourna silver 7 tour if you want a soft spinny poly fyi but gut/poly is still way better in the comfort department

AK Pro CX/Lynx is my goto #57/52

I also enjoyed:
Micronite/Lynx
Micronite/Cream
NRG2/Cyclone (not the most durable)
FB Cream
FB Poly Tour Fire

All multis 16g, polys 17g

16g is quite stiff... 17g is as soft as a poly gets...

I have the 17g, strung it in my k7 lime at 20/19 and everyone whom I let play with my racket thought it was the harshest they have ever played. My buddy who plays gut poly even noticed his year old tennis elbow pop up again within 5 minutes of hitting.

I found crisp strings and leather grip work best on the DR98. RS Lyon, Silverstring, ALU power and hybrids of these all work great. Currently really enjoying Gosen OG Sheep Micro/RS Lyon hybrid.

Its already too much headlight without leather, mine is 31.6 points headlight strung with hybrid, i suppose if I put leather it will go 31.0 or less...

Favorite set up so far, Hyper G 17/1.20 @48/46, leather grip, Yonex Overgrip, Kimony dampner, total weight 346 gram. No idea what swingweight or balance is but I love this setup. Only wish is if Hyper G would last longer then 4 hours for me before it goes dead....

I am very happy with pretty economical set up I am using:
Signum Pro Plasma Hextreme Pure 1,25 at 23kg mains
Kirschbaum Pro Line Evolution at 22kg in crosses
Very good control, comfort, pocketing. String bad is very predictable. It plays very well until mains start to move to the sides which takes probably ca. 10 hours of play.
