String stiffness ratings - adjusted for tension loss

I noticed that many of the “soft” poly strings in the TWU string database also have large amounts of tension loss. In other words, when stiffness was measured, the actual tension of these strings was much lower than the reference tension. I wanted to see how these strings compare when they all have the same ACTUAL tension. So here are the stiffness ratings when all strings have the same actual tension (I used 55 lbs):

Based on the actual tensions and stiffness ratings at TWU, I used linear regression to calculate the stiffness of each string at an actual tension of 55 lbs. Don’t worry; I used Excel so this did not take long. The calculations assume a linear relationship between stiffness and tension, which may not be true. Also, these adjusted ratings are probably not very practical because we can’t ignore tension loss in reality. But I still thought it was interesting.

Double AR Diablo (1.24) - 283.4...

This makes sense. This is marketed as one of the softest polys on the market yet when I tried it it felt like one of the stiffest I'd tried and certainly a lot stiffer than Weiss Cannon Black 5 Edge or Silverstring which it ought to be softer than (based purely on the string comparison tool numbers). It shows how misleading the comparison tool can be if you don't consider factors such as the above.

I did a similar excercise recently and bought some 4g soft because it looked like one of the softer strings out there if you normalize for tension loss. But those calcs did not extend to the court--it was way way stiffer and harsher than PTP, V-Star, Sidewinder, etc. Not sure how to explain that.

Do not buy your adjusted list. Putting Forten Sweet at 233, in the same range as many polys, my arm says "NO WAY".

Hello. I'm still on my quest after 20yrs. "off', learning about ALL of these new strings... What is, and how do you adjust for tension loss? String tighter? And, according to the stiffness chart some kind soul provided above, would a stiffer string lose less tension vs. a loser string? Thanks for your explaining this , Leroy
