String suggestions

Hi I currently play with VS gut 16g in the mains at 53lb and alu power ice blue16L in crosses at 52lb. Is there anything I can swap the alu power with? I like trying new things, thanks!

Have you tried Velocity MLT? I used to use edit: big banger original/syn gut combo and switched to this 6 months ago. The feel is good and the control is solid, especially for a multi.

Edit: It took me a while to get used to what feel was coming from a poly.

I use guts on the mains and my favorite cross so far is Luxilon 4g. It retains its playing characteristics for a long time (tension maintenance I presume) especially compared to ALU Power in my experience. Technifibre Red Code is pretty good as a cross as well

Got it thank you for your input!

I ended up stringing with gut in mains and RPM Blast 18 in crosses, hit with today and wasn’t a big fan so something different than that lol
I am not surprised. I think the choice of RPM set you on the wrong course. You really need to check out these boards to see some better options before selecting a cross as there are some great options that people have successful experience using a gut/poly setup.

Yeah you’re right Idk why I took the stringer advice. I honestly don’t know about using gut anymore because it is costly and I want to re string my racket already so might find another form of hybrid.

It is costly and is tricky to "tune" but when you do get it right it is golden. When done right you end up with a setup that is comfortable, but with great spin, and control from the poly and one which has extended playability. If you have not abandoned the setup (I would give it a shot for several factors) I would start with a multi/poly hybrid to dial in your string choice and tension with less expense and then swap out the multi for gut and fine tune from there. There are some great cheap (way cheaper than RPM) poly's to try as a cross.

Unfortunately though working with a stringer as you are may preclude this experimentation unless you find a friend who is a stringer or you string for yourself.

Thank you for your input! Before this I liked my alu power with gut pretty good and I guess I shouldn’t have strayed far from there because this setup with RPM is just terrible. Like the people above and you said, there’s other strings I should’ve tried. Should I go to the shop tomorrow and tell them that I hated this setup?

I doubt they will do anything. What you got is what you got. ALU is a nice cross but again there are better. I encourage you to search this form. If you are set on the silver generation of string try a few other round silver strings that perform better. There are other newer generation strings out there as well. I have not tried but will try very soon Yonex Poly Tour Fire which holds tension much better than ALU and thus will give you better longevity.

ghostwire 1.27mm

There are a lot of reels of smooth poly in my inventory, but GhostWire just works for me and clients.

Got it I really appreciate your help! Have you heard of signum pro firestorm by any chance?

I'm not surprised, you generally want to have a smooth poly in the crosses rather than a shaped one.

The general coconscious on these forums is that the below polys work well in a gut/poly hybrid and should act as a good starting point. Hopefully your stringer will have stock of at least one of these strings.
Yonex Poly Tour Pro
Yonex Poly Tour Fire
*Yonex Poly Tour Air (Thanks g4driver)
Tier One Ghost Wire
Tecnifibre Pro Red Code Wax (albeit now discontinued)
Kirschbaum Max Power
RS Lyon
Luxilon 4G / 4G soft
Luxilon Alu Power / Alu Power Rough
Luxilon Element
Wilson Revolve
Head Hawk / Hawk Touch
IsoSpeed Cream
Signum Pro Poly Plasma
Weiss Cannon Silverstring

It will be worth having a look through this thread also - The gut/poly thread | Talk Tennis (tennis-warehouse.com)

Yonex Poly Tour Air (YPTA) is one you should add to your list. It is the closest to Isospeed Cream but slightly softer.

I stock all of the strings you mentioned above (mostly in reels) except these three below and always recommend Tier GhostWire with Gut mains over any of the ones you listed and in my personal inventory.

A) Yonex Poly Tour Fire ( do j really need another smooth poly) -- not really.

B) Kirschbaum Max Power (a veeyworthy substitute for Lux Alu Rough)

C) RS Lyon (hard to get)

Ghostwire replaced Head Hawk / Hawk Touch, Wilson Revolve and WC Silverstring as my go to smooth cross for many players. I have an unopened reel of Revolve in gray and honestly don't expect to ever use any of those strings again.. I stocked up on reels of Ghostwire as it is my my versatile smooth poly.
