String Testing, Need Recommendations

Me: Current 3.5/4.0 player (former 4.5 club player) with long, fast strokes. Getting the rust off and hoping to play some USTA matches / team tennis in the Spring. I plan to buy a reel of string after testing (I string my own racquets).

Current Racquet: Yonex Vcore Pro 97 330g 2019 @ 50lb

Strings I've Tested:

- Hyper G 16: I really like the control, spin, and "feel", but sometimes I get a little too much power or a weird launch angle.
- Tour Bite 16: Really enjoy the low-power, spin, and control, but don't quite like the "feel" as much as Hyper G. Sometimes the power is just too low on chip shots.
- Volkl Cyclone 16: I like the low-power, control, spin, and it felt the most predictable of the three. I enjoyed it, but I like the "feel" of Hyper G and even Tour Bite more

- Tecnifiber Black Code 16: This was my previous string of choice, but I didn't love it in this new racquet.

Strings I'm testing next:
- Signum Pro Yellow Jacket 17
- Volkl V-Torque 17
- Solinco Revolution 17

I love hitting with the Hyper G, but I don't think it's the best string for my game at the moment. Cyclone seems to fit my game best, and tour bite is a close second. Are there any other similar strings you would recommend that don't break the bank?

Do you guys have any recommendations for a player like me? Would a different gauge for Hyper G change the issues I'm having? I would love that feel, control, and spin with more predictability.

im surprised your arm doesnt hurt from hyperG 16...I would try tourna s7t 17g strung at higher tension...maybe 5-7 lbs higher or maybe 16g 2-3 lbs higher if u want better durability...my arm hurts jus thinking about hyperG lol

Are you locked in to playing with the same string in the mains and crosses or same brand? If not, there are some really nice hybrids to be made.

It hurts if I don't use a shock absorber, but that's true of basically all strings.

You mean 5-7 lb higher than hyper g? Any particular reason for this?

I don't mind trying out hybrids. I string 2 piece anyway. What do you suggest?

Try some of the oldies, but still around - for a reason. Signum Pro Poly Plasma. MSV Focus Hex or Kirschbaum Pro Line II. Keep m on the low side tension wise

tourna s7t is softer than hyperG, that’s why. Also, I would use tourna s7t mains cuz it is shaped and has great bite which produces really good spin and then signum pro poly plasma crosses cuz it has wonderful feel and is amazing value. People normally say slick round poly in crosses is the way to go but Ive had good experiences with SPPP hextreme cuz the hexagonal shape has sharp edges but there’s a lower amount of surface area of the mains touching the crosses which equates to less string on string friction. Either way, SPPP is an amazing string...the only knock on it is that it doesnt provide as much grip/bite on the ball as other strings that have more protruding sharp edges to it like the tourna s7t.

I'd second the recommendation to try Tourna Silver 7 Tour. If Cyclone has worked for you but you like the crisper feel of Tour Bite, S7T would be it. I also just gone done trying Mayami Big Spin and it's very close in playability to Hyper-G and if you strung it a bit tighter, would probably give you the more crisp response you want. Both Tourna S7T and Mayami Big Spin are inexpensive strings at less than $10 a set and $100 a reel.

I also really liked Revolution. It splits the difference between Hyper-G and Tour Bite in that it has the spin capability of Hyper-G but is more comfortable, and has most of the crispness of Tour Bite but is more powerful.

Also, just be aware that many of these strings (like the Solinco products) are available in a wide variety of thicknesses and the way they feel can change greatly depending on that. So if you like Tour Bite but want more power, try the 18, 19, or 20 gauge version of it to see if it works better for you.

Thanks for the input.

I'll try out full beds of those and then try out hybrids if necessary.

Im a huge fan of 1.3 hyper g as well except I don't mind the extra power and don't find the string unpredictable. My only pickle with it is volleys - then again my volleys aren't where I'd like them to be.

If predictability is what you're after, go for round polys.

RS Lyon is a bit more on the expensive side but may suit you.

Isospeed baseline or cream could also be good since you restring yourself. They're cheap and great fresh but lose tension quickly.

Head Hawk touch has a premium price tag but could be exactly what you're after.

Another option is cyclone tour which feels more like hyper g with its additional pop but plays closer to cyclone.

When you get to that point, here are my top four hybrids for you to try.

1. Mains: Tier 1 FireWire 18g / Cross: Tier 1 Strike Force RIP 17g (go up one gauge if you are a string breaker)

2. Mains: Mayami Big Spin 17g / Cross: YTek OctoTwist

3. Mains: FireWire / Cross: Tier 1 Ghost Wire

4. Mains: FireWire 17 or 18g / Cross: Prince XC Tour
