String too old?

hey guys,

so I ran outta my favorite string (SPPP Pure Plasma). and I found a old reel of Topspin Cyber Blue in my racquet bag. When I say old, I mean 6 years old! Would these strings be 'too old' to use? I mean they have been sitting in the bottom of my bag for 6 years. do the strings deteriorate over time?

cheers

They do deteriorate. Well, to exactly know if it's too old to use... String one if you string by yourself, and if the strings don't snap back (just pull one or two mains with your fingers), you can throw the reel. I'd say it's more than likely that it's dead IMO.

It's fine. I have some natural gut that is 15 - 20 years old and has been in sealed packages. It plays better than new gut. Polyester probably has a half life of 2000 years, I think 6 is a drop in the bucket.

Should you decide to "throw" the reel, I'll give you my address to throw it to. :)

^Not really no. Co-poly has terrible tension maintenance and doesn't last as long as gut in a racquet because of this. It's hard to break, but not that durable in terms of hour of play. I wouldn't be surprised if it lost a good deal of its elasticity. Well OP can still try, but I'm not convinced.

Maybe, but on a reel without tension and not being stretched/returned by play, it should be fine for centuries.

I think that loss in elasticity would more likely occur after tensioning the string and hitting with the string. I'm sure that there are stores that sell string that are older. My vote is that they will snap back. I too would be willing to take those old strings off his hands. I'll pay shipping and some money.

Hey, so I strung my racquet with the '6 year old' cyber blue, and works like a charm. I still miss the feel of SPPP Pure Plasm, so I might be thinking about getting a reel of that soon. Those who wanted my cyber blue reel, I'll keep you in mind.
