I've heard of using sand paper or money in the clamps if they slip. Any other simple improvements using stuff that can be found at home improvement stores.

This particular tip isn't one I recommend unless the clamps are so worn they won't hold. Properly adjusted clamps shouldn't need any help to hold the strings. Having said that, there are many "household" items that can be used in tennis and stringing. Isopropyl alcohol and Hoppe's gun powder solvent are good for cleaning. Electrical grommets from Home Depot make good vibration dampers as do rubber bands. Someone posted a tip recently about some $5 cutters available at Radio Shack. Paraffin canning wax makes a good stringing lube as does chapstick.
