Stringing Machine DILEMNA!!!

I have one general question, lets say if both options cost the same, which would be the better buy and more efficient?

A) Buying a new Gamma X-6FC and adding a wise tension head to make it electronic?
B) Buying a new Gamma X-ELS ?

If those were the only choices I would vote for the Wise option but why do you need/want an electronic tensioner? Also, does it have to be a tabletop?

Personally I would consider a machine with a better mounting/clamping system then look to adding the Wise later.

I am looking for a table top model, and it has to be one of the options above^. However the X-6FC doesnt have a turntable lock where as the X-ELS does.

If it's between those two models only, go with the X-els. The time and energy you save from an electronic constant pull machine will save you in the long run. Especially if you start to string for your club and etc... Also, you might as well spend a few more bux and get the stand. It makes your life so much easier.... Cuz, you will get the stand eventually and when you do...you will ask yourself....why didn't I buy this sooner.

I'm not sure you read, the two options given, closely.

Both choices would provide electronic constant pull (actually the Wise would allow you to select constant pull or lockout).

About the stand... I agree, however it's already been made clear that he wants to use it as a table-top.

If it HAS to be between the 2 machines mentioned, I would still pick the Wise option.

But to me they are both not such great choices given the cost.

You can always add the wise to a machine with better turntable, clamps, etc but to upgrade those items its basically a new machine.

If you plan to use the table lock then pass on the Wise. Its not to be used with the table lock.

I have the 6004 with the wise and its a great combo.

What's a turntable lock for? I've got one on my Gamma Prog ST II and have never used it... :(

I know it keeps the table from rotating, but what is that used to do?

Yeah me neither. AFIAK its used when stringing Prince O ports. I use the 50/50 method for those so the brake is never used.

Maybe there is another reason for a brake but thats all I know about.

If you have the X-6FC w/WISE, you have a back-up tensioner should something happen with the WISE. On the X-ELS you only have the one tensioner.

When you pull tension, if you are not exactly aligned, which you never are *exactly*, some of the energy goes into aligning the string, tension device, and port. A turntable lock eliminates this loss.
There are counter arguments to its use, mostly regarding friction, timing, and specific Racquet requirements, typically those with O-ports.
I have an X-ELS and always use the TT lock, fwiw.

You will definitely need a solid braking system to restring most of the Head and Ektelon racquetball racquets. Especially, if you are using a basic drop weight stringing machine like an X-2. You can try and use your hip/body, but it really is a big pain. You have to be an acrobat to work the dropweight and stop the turntable from moving at the same time.

They put a braking system on most mid-high end stringing machine for a reason, so why not try and use it.

Ok, I know there are better machines out there. But my budget is 1200 max. Also i want the gamma "X Series" base.
SO, question is: both options are buying brand new machines; which would be the better buy? For the time being I am just going to buy the wise or thinking about it and add to the X-2 since I already have a boomerang tool and only string tennis rackets. But for future reference, which machine would be a better investment?

Yep!!! I have my lock out ready should my max tensions mess up my Wise!

If your going to string Prince rackets with a boomerang tool neither machine will work well. The side supports will get in the way on either machine using boomerangs. If you're using the brake for O Ports the Wise is out. I'm not sure you can use a brake and keep the string on a rotary gripper so maybe the ELS is out. So you're stuck between a rock and a hard spot.

Like Shroud suggested the 50/50 works but it is like stringing the bottom half of a racket two times. I like my cloths pin method best. Really simple, puts no added abnormal pressure on the Wise, and the side supports don't get in the way. It also works on all Ported rackets, using boomerangs you have to have 4.

i gave long consideration between the gamma6400 and gamma x-els with a stand. I heard nothing but good things on the x-els particularly since they added an electronic constant pull tension head. it was close but got the 6400 because i didn't think i needed an electric and scored the upgraded clamps. If i had a choice between the two i think i'd go for the x-els and use the brake. get a used drop weight to put in the closet for the zombie apocalypse.

Base clamp upgrade is ~$500 for the pair. Pretty darned steep.

neither. go with alpha ghost. source: used a gamma for over 3 years. it sucks
