Stringing my Pure Drive Roddick with Gut (Kim Clijsters/Williams sisters-style!)

Title explains it all. I have a Pure Drive and I'm sick of using poly because it dies in about a week. Will gut have better tension maintenance? And what tensions would you use considering the inherent power of gut?

P.S. My Pure Drive Roddick is about 12.6 ounces with a 345 swingweight.

You'd probably want it at at least 60lbs, depending on what quality of gut you're using.

I'm thinking Klip Legend. Like I mentioned, I'm sick of using multis like Babolat Xcel which cost 20 bucks a set and last maybe a month. And I also don't like polys for their stiffness and tendency to die. I'm more of a flat hitter and rarely break strings so that helps too.

Definitely. Legend is a bit stiffer than Wilson/VS if I remember correctly. (I only used legend once, and it was 16g) I could imagine that you could use it comfortably at around 56-58lbs. I'd let others chime in, but your racket has tons of pop and gut is only going to add to that.

I'm also a fan of Gut/Poly hybrid!
Use a structured poly on the crosses and the natural gut of your choice in the mains.

Tension stays maybe 2-3 times longer than a multi in the mains or full setup.
And if the poly dies, it will give you easy extra spin because of the snapback of the gut-string on the poly!

Clijsters was all gut. Both of the Williams are using gut mains/4G crosses. You'll need to pick your poison.

Yup. Don't know how accurate it is... but according to legend, what prompted Serena's demo, and eventual switch from full gut to gut/poly was an inquiry about what strings Fed was using. Apparently even other pros suffer from fanboy syndrome when it comes to Roger.

Thanks. But if I was to use a hybrid it would be with SPPP. I just don't like how quickly Luxilon or Babolat polys die out. At 16 bucks a set, you should be able to get more than 5 hours of hitting.

I get more than 5 hours. I think the "poly dying" thing has been taken to such an extreme it's become urban legend. I string for a player who insists on RPM in his crosses and he has zero problems with poly dying, mostly because he isn't aware of the "fact". I use Lux Ace in mine, and will probably go to 4G when I exhaust my Ace. In a hybrid, the gut breaks before the poly gives up the ghost. I get about 20 hours out of a hybrid.

People think going from full poly that if they put gut in the mains they are going to to spraying balls, but I find the opposite to be true. The only drawback of this setup is the expense and durability if you are a string breaker.

Thanks everyone for your input. But I'm probably going to go Klip Legend 16 at max tension (66lbs) and in my other PDR Klip mains and SPPP crosses (66lbs and 63lbs, respectively).

The goal is to get something that lasts a few months. And if this doesn't work I'm junking them and going back to my 6.1 95 - a stiff racquet that works BEAUTIFULLY with soft strings. Granville set-up!

I agree but it's all in the eye of the beholder. I've played with a lot of poly set ups and all that happens to me is that the string job losses tension. Thus, control and spin suffer but I don't get the feeling that my string bed is dead. I'll typically break a full bed of poly after 10-15 hrs so maybe that's why I don't experience this going dead phenomenon. However, it seems very real for the people who do so I guess I'm just glad that I'm not one of them.
