Strings recommendations for 3rd Gen Pure Strike Tour?

Hi all,

I just recently got the new Pure Strike Tour (PST) and have been having some arm issues. My previous set up was the Yonex Vcore Pro 330g with Volkl Cyclone 16 gauge (black) 52/52.
I used the same string setup for the PST and, while I'm really enjoying my ground strokes, my shoulder is really starting to hurt when I serve. This may be due to too much playing time and not enough rest in between, but I've never had this issue before with my previous racket.

I'm stringing the PST with the Solinco Hyper-G 17 gauge at 49/49 now and will test it out the next couple days to see if my arm feels more comfortable. That said, anyone have any string recommendations for the PST? I've also been looking at hybrid setups (poly and natural gut), but wanted to see if anybody found something that worked well for them.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve played with several different string setups on the PST, and 46-48 seems to be the sweet spot for full poly, but nat. Gut/poly at 52/48 does wonders with that racquet.

Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply! Will try lowering the tension for the full poly next time if the arm discomfort persists.

Any specific gut/poly combos that worked better for you?

ive been stringing the old and new babo.PST at 44lbs for this 4.5 guy I string for
I get a chance to hit with it at times and find it "OK",, not a fugly racquet at all, babos are not my thaang
but at 44lbs its a confortable tension for me
we usually use the orange babo.rpm.rough
but if it was my stick, I would try the tension with a 2lb or 3lb difference in tension on the crosses, to try to increase the sweetspot a bit more,, soo 46/44lbs etc

It sounds like mid to upper 40s is where you want to be when using poly for this racket. I hit yesterday with the Hyper G at 49/49 and it felt so much better. Played a couple sets and had no discomfort. Plenty of spin and good control. Think I'll lower the tension a bit more the next time I use a full bed of poly to see what happens.

I'll definitely try the difference in tension next time. Might as well try natural gut and poly hybrid at differing tensions to take both of your advice! Thinking of starting at natural gut at 52 for the main and poly at 48 for the cross as suggested by Ft.S. I've been eyeing the Babolat Hybrid (RPM blast 17 + VS 16). Any suggestions for hybrids by any chance?

With respect to the fugly racquet comment... the PST with the neon green Hyper G is not a pretty sight but as long as it gets the job done...

I use VS Touch 16 and RPM Blast Rough 17.
using babolat strings, I can ee using this one
I would add that
16g vs gut mains and 17g b.rpm.rough, would be the equivalent of the federer setup!?!?
how ever, I would like to see how 16g vs mains and 18g round poly cross would do,, on a 18/20 pattern racquet, 18g cross strings would work, imo

Thank you both! I'll revisit this thread once I get a chance to hit with the VS Touch 16 and RPM Blast Rough 17 combination.

Just circling back to this to report that I've settled on the hybrid setup you both had recommended. I have 16g VS gut in the main and RPM Blast Rough 17 in cross at 49/52. Plenty of easy power and good control. Absolutely loving this racquet now and have no arms problems at all. Also like the fact that the hybrid setup appears to maintain tension longer than a full poly bed.

Having just purchased this racket, I would be curious if anyone has found any good full bed poly matches? I have been using Cyclone 18L on the regular 16x19, does the Tour work well with thin/softer polys?

After some experimentation, I use VS17/HyperG Soft 18 at 47/44 lbs and get about 15 hours. It plays well with soft poly including HGS, HyperG, Cyclone Tour etc. at 40-42 lbs also, but it has better feel with the gut/poly hybrid.

Thanks SocalLefty. While I occasionally do play with gut/poly hybrid I'd like to find a cheaper option for now as the default. Good to see the low 40s tension, I generally go for that range as well for polys
