In this I talk about open string patterns and ask if the pattern or strings on a racket produces more spin. apparently, its the strings. I wanna look into higher gauges, ive always used 16.

anybody know about Ashaway Monogut 16L or MSV Focus Hex 16L ?
what about Topspin Cyber Flash 17 or BABOLAT PRO HURRICANE TOUR 17 ?

also in the post, someone said the 18X19 pattern was special. whats special about the 18X19 pattern?

Don't.........

Don't fall into the belief that a racquet or string will "produce" more spin, spin comes from your technique. The string pattern, string and racquet specs are all about feel that the player requires to comfortably control the ball. 18x20 patterns are generally for more control, while 16x19 patterns offer more power and feel. An 18x19 pattern is just a pattern in between the first two designed to give you a mixture of control and feel. This is why it's best to demo. Hope this helps.

Sure, technique has a lot to do with the spin we produce on our shots, but I've also used different racquets which clearly seemed to offer me more or less spin potential. Here comes the bad news...

Really no predicting the "spin potential" that you'll personally find with any racquet until you take it out and play with it. One of the "spin friendliest" frames I use is an 18x20 mid. In this case, it ain't the string pattern. Each racquet has its own combination of weight, balance, flex, and hoop size, along with other details besides the string pattern. When you put each individual combo together with your personal style of swing, it makes for a unique result.

I like a thinner gauge of syn. gut (17 ga.) for its feel and possibly a mildly higher degree of bite on the ball, but this is only a subtle shade of grey. Poly or kevlar can turn out more "relative spin" because with their diminished resilience, they make less velocity. Thinner string in a frame with a dense pattern may seem to offer better feel and spin, plus I don't think it gets chewed up as quickly as it might in a more open pattern.

I don't really see anything "special" about an 18x19 pattern on its own. There's definitely more to it than just the string pattern.
