Stringway Flying Clamps

Anyone have any experience using these? I just got a set because I was looking for better clamps than the Klippermate flying clamps I started with and these have great reviews. I got a double and a triple. I’ve only been stringing for about six months or so on a Klippermate. I’ve strung two racquets now with the new Stringway clamps but they’ve caused a little notch in my gut mains at the top with a small amount of fraying right off the stringer. Im sure it’s me and figured I had the clamps too tight. What do you all think?

I just seen Pro Stringer Claws a couple of days ago. Has anyone used them? They come in 2 different sizes Medium and Large. The advantage of the Pro Stringer Claws is they adjust to the spacing of the strings, so the strings are not distorted as much.

They're great clamps. You probably just had them set too tight, especially since you were accustomed to your Klippermate clamps. When Klippermates are set correctly, there is very tangible resistance when closing the clamps. However the Stringways close with a much lighter and more efficient touch. I'd play around with some scrap natural gut, and adjust the clamps to the point where they hold but don't notch the string.

They do seem really well machined. The ones i fondled (once) were beautiful.
I'd guess, based on their machining/tolerances/etc, that they would require light
"pressure" as @loosegroove suggested above.

I ordered two of the Medium ones. I initially wanted the Stringway triple clamps but they were out of stock.
The Pro Stringer Claws are amazing and worth every penny. Way way better clamping and result compared to the plastic Gamma clamps.
The spacing thing is very clever and it does result in less distortion of strings and better tensioning result.
I string a 16x19 Blade v7 and an RF97 with them and I would say for the top and bottom crosses the Large would come in handy although I can manage with the medium if you insert the clamp at a 45 degree angle to the strings and kinda fight & wiggle it a bit.
If I was to splurge, I'd get 2 mediums and 1 large.

Medium is 16mm, Large is 21mm for the Claws.
I'm using two clamps at a time when stringing mains and crosses so there are some parts of the frame where trying to use just the large would be too difficult, cause too large space and possibly some uneven tension.
You could also always order the 1M 1L package and purchase an additional 1M later on if you find that setup unsuitable.
Try also emailing the company and ask for their advice of what would be sufficient.

I assume you're talking about claws. One of the features I like about Claws is they adjust to string spacing. A L will be too wide and bulky for tight patterns while a M will not be wide enough for wide spacing on outer strings.

Curious people’s opinions on Stringway triple clamps vs. Pro Stringer Claws 2.0. Seems like the triple clamps improve tensioning by reducing twisting and drawback, while the Claws improve tensioning by distorting the string less during clamping. Do I have that right? If so, which one leads to more overall accuracy? @Irvin seems to be a proponent of the Claws in this thread and elsewhere—is that based on accuracy or ease of use or something else?

Chrome plating is purely aesthetic. Yes, Claws 2.0 are one-size-fits-all. Technically I think they say it works for 99%...

If true—and it may well be—this is not mentioned in the item description on their website. Only thing there about 2.0+ is “aesthetic durability and awe.” I would have liked to have known about this other difference…where did you learn it?

I clamp mine from the bottom. I think you need to clamp from the top if you are using their machine because there is a bar below the racquet that gets in the way, but I clamp from the bottom like normal.

Preferably from the bottom. Some “machines” don’t allow for such……

I confirmed this with the Pro Stringer folks. Odd they don’t actually mention it on the website.

I've been using my stringway flying clamps without any problems for a decade. (double + triple).
hold onto the strings with such little pressure and don't crush the strings. You might have adjusted them to be too tight.

Maybe some explanation may help in this discussion:
I think that the Pro stringer clamps are beautiful products designed for functionality.

Compared with the Pro Stringer clamps the intention of our triple clamp is rather different:
- To cause minimum loss of tension (drawback) the triple clamp clamps 3 main strings so that the rotation is minimal.
- The triple can clamp 2 cross strings at a large distance and 3 at a small pitch.

One advise for the Prostringer guys:
Add a nylon or Delrin washer under the eccentric this lowers the friction and wear of the parts.
Metal on metal slides badly.

Yes, it does seem to me there is an advantage of the Stringway triple clamp in terms of drawback. But the Claws 2.0 have the advantage in terms of not pushing out or pinching in the strings while clamping, which the triple clamp can help with--given the large gap--but the Stringway triple clamp can not be spaced perfectly for every string like the Claws 2.0. If money were no object, or I were stringing a lot for other people, I might buy all of them!

Maybe one day one of you all will come up with a triple clamp with adjustable spacing...when you do I will let you know where to send the royalties.

I mean the white washer on the picture.
The friction coefficient between metal and nylon / Delrin is lower than between metals.
This means that the force to close the clamp will be lower and the feel of the actual clamping force on the string will be better.
Besides the wear goes into the cheap washer instead of the expensive parts of the clamp.
What is the square size of the pullrod, 10 mm?

I have both Stringway double/triple and PS Claws v1 and 2. My kids string 2-4 sticks weekly and we prefer the Pro Stringer claws for ease of use while stringing. The Stringway Triple strings tightest of all of the clamps, being the one with the least string movement when the stringer unspools. However, with wider gaps, it also pulls on the strings the most, unlike the Claws, which are 21mm at the widest, enough to deal with our racquet gaps. That's the only reason I bought them as an upgrade for air travel. We used to travel with 2x normal and 1x large Claws v1. Now we just fly with 2x Claws v2.
The stringway and claws 2 have dial adjustment for clamp tension, the Stringway being a bit looser and harder to mark for various string widths. The Claws v2 have more space to mark various thickness, which for my eyes, is easier to use.
