Suggestion for synthetic gut to hybrid with nat gut

Hi all,

I'm currently playing with Tonic+ 15L mains and Gosen OG sheep micro super 16 crosses. I like this setup quite a lot, but I need to switch the crosses. What I look for in the cross syngut is mainly tension maintenance and comfort. Durability should not be an issue, as I always break the nat gut mains first. How would you rate the strings below in terms of these requirements?

i love psgd and i use it on my mf300. it's 16 and strung at 57lbs. the strings move quite a lot though. give me ample of topspins

Consider Ektelon Power Play (used to be called Prince Syn Gut, it's located under prince strings at TW). It's soft, and holds tension about as well as other syn guts.

Forten Sweet is also good, it's a string that won't take away or add weird characteristics to the gut job. It's reasonably durable, holds tension well (lasts well!) and is soft for a basic syn gut cross.

Since Gosen JC 17 is no longer made, I've opted for PSGD 18 in my Xs. I prefer a crisper feel. Head PPS is slightly less stiff and I would categorize the Wilson with the Gosen OG Sheep. If you like a bit softer, more comfy feel, there's a Laserfibre classic syn gut ( don't think TW stocks it) that fits the bill and is also fairly inexpensive... Since they're all basic mono synths, their tension holding properties are fairly similar to what you're already using...

Ashaway Liberty synthetic 16g at $1.89.

It's on the softer and comfortable side among nylon mono's,
it's cheap, above average tension maintenance.

It's below average on durability. Added benefit is that it seems
to have slight texture (probably unintentional) and it tends to
lock mains better than others...

I think Liberty should be categorized as a tourney nylon. Because that's what it is. The nylon grade is (most likely) lower than a normal syn gut. I say this because i've had multiple, multiple sets snap on me (in the middle of the string bed, no nicks, no kinks, no clamp crushing, no bad grommets). This was stringing anywhere from 58 lbs to 62 lbs Constant Pull. It just couldn't handle the higher tensions (I don't think i'd have had the same problems on a crank machine). I think it's an excellent string for the price, don't get me wrong, but it has it's place, and i don't think it's in the crosses of a higher end hybrid. It's texture (which i actually really like) is also going to provide a little bit of texture for the mains to rub against when they move. It might lock them into place better, but it'll promote wear, not prevent it WHEN movement occurs

Yes, I think so. It's more like tournament nylon.

I did have one snapped on me once out of about 8 string jobs with it.

But for some reasons, it locks the mains better than other strings.

I suggested this string because original poster mentioned always poping
mains first.

Durability of my Tonic+ mains and Liberty cross has been good for
last 2 month now ( I used a couple of elastomer, though..)

Costs a bit more than Gosen OG... but what the heck you are using Nat gut in the mains...

Boris, I am also wandering why are trying to change from Gosen OG? Have you perceived a substantial tension loss on the crosses? Were the Main and cross tensions matching? And how would you rate the Tonic+ natural gut?

I am really quite happy with the Gosen. To tell you the truth, though I've tried many multis, I almost have no experience with syntetic guts. The Gosen feels pretty nice to me, but I have no term of comparison. It's the first syn gut I have ever used and have stuck with it so far.

The problem is that I live in Europe, and I am considering to purchase strings from an online shop inside the European Union, because my last shipment from TW is having delay problems at the customs (not TW fault, but still disappointing). In Europe, Gosen strings seem to not have any distribution at all. The syn guts I mentioned in my first post are among those available here.

Regarding the Tonic+, again I have little or no term of comparison, because it's the first nat gut I have ever used. All in all, I really love it, it is very soft and powerful. In 15L gauge it is also reasonably durable. The nat gut experts here will tell you that VS is even better, and I believe that. However, in my opinion Tonic+ 15L in a hybrid with syn gut crosses plays and feels better than a premium multifilament, and costs as much (and in Europe quite a bit less). I have read on the boards that other natural guts play somewhat crisper, and indeed Tonic+ has some buttery feel to it.

Europe...why don't you give a chance to Decathlon Ar***** synthetic gut? I am always been curious about their quality. Cheap and handy!

Duraflex is fine to use with gut. I drop the tension of the Duraflex about 5% since it's not as elastic as the gut. Lately, I've been using Head Fibergel Power or Alpha Prodigy in the crosses. The Prodigy is a little softer and has more power.

Steve mentioned the Forten synthetic gut and I would agree with that choice.

I'm a little leary about using PSGD as a cross with gut mains-the PSGD seems to have some rough edges that may cut into the gut. But I haven't used that set-up.

But if I was using Tonic 15 ga on the mains I think I would probably go ahead and finish it off with the Tonic in the crosses. I don't know of any synthetic that can hang in with 15ga gut.

I don't see Prodigy in the Alpha section at TW. Do they carry it?
