World No.1 Novak Djokovic was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for the second year in a row. The Serb was on hand in Berlin to accept his award, dedicating it to Formula One driver Niki Lauda and footballer Johan Cruyff. Djokovic topped fellow star athletes Stephan Curry, Lewis Hamilton, Usain Bolt, Jordan Spieth and Lionel Messi for the award.

"He had a great year again," said Djokovic's coach Boris Becker, a Laureus Academy member. "He's played 88 matches, has won 82, He won three out of the four Grand Slams, reached the final of the French Open, he’s won seven other tournaments. Very few players, if any, had a year like that."

Nm, thought it was a "sportsmanship" award, not sportsman

I still cant believe he won last year, but IMO he should have in 2012 (for 2011) so it balances out I guess. Congrats Novak!

Cool that tennis players win this award so often. You'd think a more popular sport like football or basketball would take the prize more often than not. It's tennis on the men's and women's side. Very special. I hope tennis becomes more and more popular. It still has that elite, rich-kid feel to it where I live. I'd love for it to become more accessible.

Legends Messi, Curry, Bolt, Hamilton and Spieth were the competition.
He still won the award.

Of course he did - he cleaned up the field.
Streaks ahead of the other guys in contention.

Oh and in case I didn't say it above somewhere, well done to Novak.
He has proven himself to be a true champion and deserves everything he gets.

Great achievement considering the sportsmen Novak had to compete with for this award. Congrats!

The other guys were freaks last year too. Strongest group of Laureus nominees in recent years if not ever.
Not twice as good as the next best in their sports though. ;)
Novak was in a league of his own last year IMO.

Not an equally easy job to measure that in every sport. Messi and Curry for example stole all the shows. ;)
Individual sports players will stand out most of the time though since they depend a lot less on other factors.

Novak's holistic approach to the Dutch Cruijff total football magic ways. The total tennis philosophy has pushed him over the top.

Unfortunately, tennis is an expensive sport, so it's upper-income families have a greater advantage to producing higher level players.

He did win in 2012. This is his 3rd win.

Wow that is super awesome. I still don't agree with his 2015 (for the year 2014) award, but still amazing he has done it 3 times. I love Novak, but it is just hard to fathom a 1 slam year of tennis was the best year in all of sport (regarding last year) but they must have seen something.

Bolt and Messi rank higher in their sports' history than does Novak Djokovic in the history of his.

I am not sure on Messi. I am not a huge footballer (Euro version) fan but I would have guessed he was still outside the top 5, just as Djokovic probably is for now. Arent guys like Pele, Maradona, and several others still above him now? Especialy as he hasn't really produced at the biggest event- World Cup (his MVP there last time was a farce, everyone knows he wasn't up to snuff even there). He is the best of his era for sure, but all time he is still climbing the ladder just like Novak.

Bolt it depends if you are talking the whole of track and field, or just one specific area (sprinting). One specific area (sprinting) could be the equivalent of just one specific are of tennis (eg- Australian Open, slow hard courts). I think in the whole of track and field there are definitely guys who rank higher than Bolt- Lewis (due to his combined sprinting/long jumping), Gebrselassie, El Gerrouj, Bubka, even though he is definitely the best sprinter of all time.

I largely agree with you on Messi, actually - I think he is overrated due to the recency bias (many people state he is the GOAT, when he's clearly not). Personally I rank him at 4th place, but you're right that he is probably borderline top 5. Certainly Pele and Maradona are above him, and the case can be made for several others such as Di Stefano, Puskas, Cruyff and Beckenbauer.

However, this is still clearly greater than Novak Djokovic, who ranks only 9th among male tennis players all-time, and is not yet in Tier 1.

For Bolt, I was referring to sprinting only, where is the clear GOAT.

Sorry, 9th is only YOUR OPINION.

Football is a team sport so hard to judge an individual.

Golden Ball has become a joke in the last decade. We all know that in the past, performance at big events like Fifa World cup, Uefa Euro or Copa America plays a very important part.

We've just had chance to witness Spain, one of the most sucessful squads in history with Euro - World cup - Euro back - to -back and no member of them wins the Golden Ball. It's a fvcking disgace. Xavi, Iniesta or Casilas should have won it.

Messi hardly proves anything outside Barcelona, and Barcelona is the greatest FC in the last 10 years. Spain - constructed mainly by Barca players - won everything without Messi.

The fact that Messi and Ronaldo took nearly 10 Golden Balls shows that it has been completely ruined by organizers for commercial purposes. There're so many evidences that poll results have been faked by authorities.

Messi? He's clearly better than C. Ronaldo but putting him above Di Stefano, Pele, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Platini, Zidane, Ronaldo... is a bad joke.

It probably would have gone to McIlroy but his personal life around that time may have affected the votes. He did win 2 majors to Djokovic's 1.
