SW19 - Wimbledon Prediction League (Seventh in Series) Second of Grandslam editions!

We are in @ for the 7th in the series, this being the 2009 SW19 WIMBLEDON GRANDSLAM EVENT

Points Scoring Rules(MUST READ)
FOR EVERY MATCH you predict the winner and the score they win by in sets. Predict the correct winner but the wrong score in sets, you'll get two points. However, if you also nail the score line in sets, (ie, Nadal beats Murray 2 set to love) you’ll get five points.

Each predictor is also able to pick a winner and runner up of the respective tournament (they have approximately up to a day before the FIRST ROUND MATCH in which to do this) Come the conclusion of the tournament – ten points will be given to each predictor that predicts BOTH the correct winner and runner up and five points for the one or the other.

If you grasp a sudden urge to change one or more predictions that you may already have posted, please make a new post, so I am aware of the time it was posted and can validate that the prediction was made before the respective match / matches. (Editing posts makes matters complicated)

Player Retirement Rules
1. If there is a walkover, the match is void.
2. If there is a retirement, and you picked the person that doesn't retire, you get 2 points. No matter the sets or score.
3. If there is a lucky loser situation (like what happened with Safin this tourny), and you picked the person the lucky loser replaced and the lucky loser wins, you get points accordingly (2 for correct winner, 5 for correct winner and set). If you picked the opponent and they win, you get points accordingly.

For those that want to introduce the game range rule, just mention it as you check in and also state whether you'd like it to form from the Quarter's or Semi's.

In. Damn, I actually went through the trouble of calculating the scores. Didn't know you'd already done it. :)

I say yes to games picks from QF on. Also, I saw you guys were talking about retirements in the previous thread. I agree that they should be handled as they always have, w/ the person who picks the player that doesn't retire getting the 2 pts. I've had some of these go against me too, so I'm not just saying this b/c of the situation that occured yesterday.

I like prediction things..I just don't understand exactly what you really have to do for this one. Do you have to predict everyday? Also, can anybody join during the season?

Hahahaha. Sorry about that man, i was really eager to get the SW19 league up and running.

In regards to the games policy, you and me are one of few in favour of it, so we'll have to wait and see howmany it totals to in the end.

In regards to the retirement policy for player's during matches: It seems most people agree with you on that, judging by posting in a prediction thread a few series back. This Wimbledon series will be ran with the same rule and player's are free to voice their disagreement together with their alternative suggestion briefly. It'll then be taken in to consideration for future series.

In.

About the games picks - I'm ok with this rule, but it would be better if it's valid only for SF and F.
But it's Ok with me if it's enforced from QF onward.

To break matters down:

  • Before the tournament you have the option to predicting the two finalists and the fate of them in the final itself.

  • For example:
    Wimbledon Winner: Roger Federer
    Wimbledon Runner up: Andy Murray

  • You gain 10 points for predicting the correct winner and runner up or 5 points for just one predicting one of them.

  • @ the end of each day's play, the next day's matches will be posted up, its up to you to post your prediction of each match including the scoreline in sets.

  • For example:

  • Fourth Round: Roger Federer v Tommy Hass - Roger Federer to win 3 sets to 1

  • You gain 2 points for predicting the correct winner and 5 points for the correct winner and scoreline in sets.

  • Anyone can join in.

So for the 1st round, we can predict every single match?...the more matches predicted the more chance of higher points right?

You'd be very stupid not to predict every match, there've been player's that missed one day's play and scored brilliantly for the rest of the tournament, yet only finished a mere 5th/6th.

OK thanks, your intro is a little unclear I must admit, at first I thought it was only predicting the finalists and nothing else.

I look forward to this :)

IN as usual.

also I'll say no to games predictions this time out, they've caused a bit too much controversy (one way or another), and I think we can all have fun competing in the standard version. It's also less confusing, and given that everyones on a level playing field anyway won't really affect the outcome ^^

Looking forward to this, like I mentioned I might have to work out a bizarre way to continue after the first week, but I'll be damned if I don't manage to participate somehow!

==

On a side note, I thought that maybe come the end of the predicting season (lol) we could have some special awards on offer in the trophy cabinet for people who did well predicting the results on a particular surface.

e.g. king/queen of clay/grass/hard or something like that.

Definately in! I already feel sorry for myself for having participated since the first MS event..

I'm against the game range predictions, it doesn't add any excitement for me at all.

Good idea!

Could include graphical trophies as well?

I'm in. Couldnt do the previous ones. Was short on time and busy! A bit more free now tho! How does this work?

Just pick the winners of all the matches and rounds when the draw comes out? And the scores in sets? cool

Pretty much. As well as the Winner and Runner up of the tournament.

Don't you mean for having not participated?

You're right, that's what I meant. But if I start doing really well from now on who knows, there's still two GS, four MS and the Masters Cup to play for.. Looking forward to it, and I hope you keep on organising this game for the forseeable future TM!

You've been very much a consistent performer, you'd definetely be a part of the fighting top 4-8 pack had you competed every tournament. Your one that doesn't really score big in rounds, but instead does just above average each time and never goes through a rotting period. Thats a lot like me in a way, the key to my odd success.

Thanks man, i'll definetely continue it as long as people have a desire to play it. Seffina is also a person that deserves a lot of thanks.

PS: Changed the layout of the opening post, what do you think?

In. Like Mizuno I am also disappointed at missing the beginning of the season.

Also T_M was the winning percentages decided as the tie-breaker?

On the games ranges I would prefer if we did womens games instead because it makes it more interesting and harder and it shows if you have a true tennis knowledge or not. Games predicting can really go any way and is based on alot of luck not really tennis prediction knowledge.

Also like the idea of king and queen of the surface.

Absolutely! Thanks too Seffina too!

I think the new layout is good, people who are joining the game from now on will see the first post and know it contains the rules of the game. But to be honest I don't understand people who come on this thread and ask ''how does this game work?'', apparently they didn't even bother to read through the first post, which is a bit lazy I think.

In like Flynn.

I'll second this. I hesitated against the ladies' matches predictions because not everyone watches them. But by the time the quarters roll around, people get familiar enough even if they are not watching any matches. And there are days when there are no gentlemen matches. It would be good.

And while the predicting the games was interesting, I will agree that it added no extra appeal to the process. I enjoyed the fake predicting I did for the ladies' matches more.

Just an opinion.

Also some people did not play due to the complication of the games range idea.

I don't like ladies matches idea. Not trying to be a killjoy, but if we pick men's all tourney, to all of a sudden pick women's quarters or semis on to me seems a bit unfair. Not everyone on here watches women's tennis as religiously as they watch men's. If games go that's ok, but women's shouldn't be a replacement.

The only womens tennis I watch when I can be bothered (like 2-3 games a GS) is Ivanovic for obvious reasons

and
I don't like predicting ladies matches either..
And that's fine. We don't have to change anything. I was just saying I would've preferred it if we did, but I understand if we don't.

I vote for ladies matches and against silly and useless games predictions.

Are you in or out gj? Make a decision. It's irritating hearing you whine and then say you'll never come back. Lo and behold 3 days later you're crapping all over the thread again. I'm sure nobody objects to you playing, but if you aren't playing, don't come here.

I think the ladies match voting is a bad idea. I think they should either have their own thread or their matches shouldn't be voted on. I personally know nothing of the players, and don't go out of my way to watch the matches. I don't think it would be great. Of course if the majority want to do it, I won't object constantly like certain posters. That's you gj, just so you don't accuse me of trash talking behind your back. I'm addressing you.
