Bacon is cooked well done. Pulled pork, or brisket is smoked for HOURS and HOURS! No chance of a parasite from pork. I don't do undercooked anything...

Maybe we should close down the borders for a while. Already have several outbreaks in border towns on U.S. side.

Hope the idiots in Washington who are more concerned about terrorist treatment pay attention to this strand and its origination.
Biological weapons are a very serious border concern but a very difficult part of the border terrorist protection plans to detect/enforce. Shutting down the boarder maybe effective and Im sure it depends on the outbreak situation

We're all relieved Rickson doesn't eat port but he rather badly misses the point. The infection vector may have ORIGINATED in swine but is now in the human pool, so one gets this flu like any other -- from other people.

Every so often there's some disease that stirs up a bunch of fear. Just ignore it and go on with your lives.
Yeah; I think that it's not going to be a huge problem. Swine flu basically acts like any other flu in the early stages. If you feel like you have the flu, just go to the doctor and get some flu meds. It'll only be deadly if it's allowed to get stronger in you.

Things will be getting a little too exciting. The CDC is very worried about a serious reemergence of Aviary (bird) flu, in addition to this swine flu, the usual asian flu later this year, and possible spread of West Nile virus. Flu season historically was in winter because people crowd closer together in winter and the vector spreads more easily, but an ever more crowded world means flu season could become the entire year.

Swine flu, huh? I was reading about this two days ago, at first I was just "meh". But now that it's all over the news and a report on the progress, I became a little more aware.. and started noticing how vivid scenes of Resident Evil popped up in my mind :|.

Luckily all the US cases have either recovered, or been controlled. It kind of scares me though, how Mexico's strain has mutated; what if the virus adapts further and proves immune to antivirals? Then we'll really have something big on our hands..

BTW i tend to undercook bacon because I'm not good at cooking it.. uh-oh :( hehehe.

This makes me kind of nervous. :-|

I hope the media is dramatizing it and it's not as bad as it seems.

Noone said you catch this virus from consuming pork. I said I'm glad I don't eat pork. Hogs are filthy animals.

OK guys, If you feel sick in anyway, or have any kind of cold like symptoms whatsoever, Please stay home tomorrow and Call in Sick. That is the coming directly from NIH.

yes, and one of the most natural meats found now, because any other animals like chickens and cows are being fed with steroids, or some artificial vitamin by the government to make them grow faster

On a more serious note, this is but another example why we should have secure borders. Just imagine if some pandemic occurred in Mexico that they could not control. People could stream across the border looking to get away from it, or seek medical help in the US. With a flood of people coming across the border there would certainly be people who were infected. Sure they could get into the country through other means, but not in mass and as easily, especially if legal travel was restricted.

Guys!!!!! The world is coming to an end. Have as much sex as possible, eat as much as possible and also play as much tennis as possible. There might be no courts in hell. Wow what a scary thought that is.

How is it transmitted? Apparently some ambulance crew won't even take sick patients into their vehicles!

You guys need to know how virus and the immune system works. Surely, it's possible to get sick from eating poorly cooked pork (any meat for that matter), but you'd get sick from a parasite, not a virus.

First of all, viruses are very simple, DNA/RNA with a protein coat, all of which becomes denatured in high heat. Secondly, most viruses mutate and some at a frequent rate. Influenza is one that mutates at a high rate, that's why people get the flu over and over again. Because everytime, the virus looks slightly different to the immune system. I don't want to get into it because it's amazingly complex the way our immune system works. Also, the immune system is one EFFICIENT killing machine, it actually takes a lot to kill a young adult, like the ones that are dying off in Mexico. Death in young adults is a trademark of a pandemic. Essentially, the immune system blankets the foreign particle with variation of antibodies that recognizes bits and pieces of the foreign particle. For example, Flu antibody A will recognize the top part of the virus, while Flu antibody B will recognize the bottom part of the virus. Come next season, the top part looks different but the other antibody will still recognize the bottom part, so it's still able to mount an attack, just not as fast and efficient.

Now, viruses can exchange genetic material, reshuffles, and create something entirely new. A blue virus can meet a yellow virus, exchange some genetic material, and give rise to a green virus. Something that the immune system has never seen. This is probably what is happening with the swine flu. The pig version of influenza exchanged genetic material from the human version of the influenza, giving rise to swine flu.

The pig influenza probably didnt have the capability to infect humans, but it gains that ability from the human influenza. And because the human race has never seen the pig influenza, it has a hard time fighting it off.

Swine Flu - How comfortable are you with the actions our country is taking?

As some of you may or may not know, the WHO just raised the alert level to 5, its next-to-highest notch, signaling a global pandemic could be imminent.

Having nothing to do with politics or party affiliation, do you believe we are doing what is necessary to protect against the probable pandemic?
For instance, when the director of Homeland Security was asked by senators if we should be closing the border with Mexico, she repeated the administration's position that questioning of people at borders and ports of entry was sufficient for now and said closing borders "has not been merited by the facts."

Some other countries are being much more aggressive, while still others are taking a wait and see approach.

What are your thoughts?

Do you really think closing the borders will be sufficient? I mean crossing the Mexican/US border is not the only way to the US from Mexico. An infected person could go to Guatemala and catch a flight to the US. Basically it's nearly impossible to stop something like this from spreading especially if the incubation period is somewhat long.

you know they way i see it i dont really care, bc this has happened before, if i recall back int he 1980s there was a scare like this, and everything turned out fine, so id say same thing is going to happen, i mean we dont even know that this flu does to us or anything, so its too early to judge, i mean i understand the risks and precautions needed but as of right now its whatever to me
