i recently decided to switch from 2h backhand to a 1h backhand since it was my nature backhand. what do i need to do to make my 1hbh smooth and consistent?

Get a coach. Simple as that. If you can't, read up on basic techniques. Master the flat/slice backhand before the topspin.

good prep and a nice contact point with a grip that matches well!

Watch ball, turn shoulders early, close the stance during the stroke, extend back hand back, consistent grip and swing.

1. Understand the technique you are trying to use thoroughly. There is no use imbedding a flawed technique into your coordinated eye/brain/leg/torso/arm stroke pattern. Obviously this is best done with a coach.
2. Practice, practice, practice.
3. Reasess that a flaw hasn't crept into your technique.
4. Practice, practice, practice.
5. Work on the "weak link" moments of your 1HBH, learning when to use topspin and backspin to your best advantage: return of first serve, hitting on the run out deep and wide, finishing off weak short high balls, approach shot on weak short low balls.
6. Practice, practice, practice.
7. Develop your 1HBH into a weapon.
8. Practice, practice, practice.
9. Keep practicing or else you will slip back to just a run of the mill backhand.

you keep hitting it the way the only way you know how. Your body will gradually change as you keep hitting it, your BH should turn into a weapon after that

I made the same switch back in highschool many years ago. There are a few things you need to pay attention to in order to hit a good one-hander.

First of all you need an eastern backhand grip, and you need to get a good shoulder turn, your hitting shoulder should be facing the ball as you start your stroke and should be turned at contact opening up only after you have hit the ball, then bend your knees get down low, step into the shot and meet the ball in front of you with your hitting arm relaxed and fully extended.

Sorry, but why are you switching to a 1hbh again? I'm just curious here. I'm assuming, as of right now, that your 2hbh is a lot better than your 1hbh but you want to switch to, and learn a 1hbh instead. I just want to know the logic behind this if you don't mind.

Without access to a coach, once youve got a general understanding of the technique and what needs to be done, your best friend is a video camera to actually see what youre doing and to correct issues

yeah im not going to switch to 1h anymore. i cant get the timing right and my school coach even told me to just stick with 2h.

I agree with Jonny. I never could have timed my unnatural 2HBH right even after a year of playing with it. When I switched to the 1 hander, there were a few hitches in it, but I could have made winners right off the start unlike my 2 hander.

How do you know it's your natural backhand? IMO, if it's your natural backhand you shouldn't lose your timing.

its the backhand i started with and feels most comfortable with. i lost the timing due to my 2hbh because my takeback is different and the way i swing it is completely different than the 1hnder. i mean if i use the 1h now, its really smooth but i would often hit it either late or a bit too early and frame the ball.

Do you have a loop or straight back? I actually find that if I play with a 2hbh (I have a full-time 1hbh, and have for all 5 years I've played) that my backhand timing improves because my 1hbh backhand is a straight backswing and my 2hbh is a straight backswing.

EDIT: How is your slice backhand?

my 1hnbackhand has a loop in it but my 2h does not (might have a small loop that i dont notice) so therefore the timing is always off between the two. and my slice is fine. its low, penetrating, and kinda curvy( i prefer it to be curvy than straight even though i can also it it straight and skiddy)

Ever try a straight takeback? You'd be surprised at the rhythm you can get with it.

Also try to swing with your offhand if you have a 2HBH as well. I'd say 75% on your offhand actually does the swinging for a 2HBH.

I am pretty new to tennis, but have played a lot of racket sports, I was advised to start with a 2h backhand, but it felt alien, using all the wrong parts of my body and arms, and I hated it. I refused to carry on and now just use my 1h, its slowly improving. I hit mainly flat, some slice at times, no real top spin yet, but the rhythm and consistency is coming. Each to their own, but it seems to me those who use a 2h bh either started with it when young and stay with it, or can not get the hang of a 1h BH and switch for more control. I dont fit into either category, so I will pursue the 1h.

I think what your trying to say is that your very right hand dominant. The racquet and motion feels smooth and effortless with your 1HB while your 2HB albeit more consistent atm feels forced and hitchy.

I started with a 1HB when I was younger but went to the 2HB when I started to play as a teen. It was a rough transition but the main thing that helped me was to let my left hand be free. That meant even though your right hand is stronger you have to relinquish control and let the left hand lead. Your right hand is there for stability only and to control the angle of the racquet face.

One way I use to remind myself is when I saw a backhand coming I gripped hard with the left hand for a brief second then left it go relaxed. It was reminded to my righthand that the left is now going to dominate. This helped me get over my problems with righthand dominance on the 2HB.

I hope this helped,

Mike
