Switching from full poly to multi/poly and overhitting

Since I am getting old and swinging with full poly has started to cause arm pain I made the switch to hybrid of multi/poly. I previously used full RPM blast at 50# or hyper G at 50#. Now I am trying a hybrid of wilson NXT in mains at 55# and hyper G in crosses at 50#. My arm is feeling fine even after 3 days in a row of hitting but I am overhitting a lot of balls a foot past the baseline. I realize multi have significantly more power than those poly's I am used to using but wasn't expecting such a dramatic difference with a hybrid. Has anyone made a similar switch in strings and found a way to get the ball back into the court without serious change in stroke? Is there a multi with less power than the wilson NXT or should a change in tension be in order? Maybe a soft poly could work, something like isospeed cream?

First thing that comes to mind is trying a lower powered multi in the main, maybe Velocity. NXT may have too much power if you don't want to compensate for it.

NXT Control could be worth trying too if you like the line. You could try Cream but the benefit of multi main will be maintaining that comfort for longer, where poly will die out quicker.

-yeah, i would consider a softer cross poly strung a bit tighter
-there are quite a few softer poly options now
-h.lynx,, isospeed.cream, babo.rpm.power
-FB options h.lynx.touch, b.rpm.SOFT

-btw, H.velocity is also a good suggestion

I'd try synthetic gut instead, not as powerful as multi, probably more durable and mostly all the same arm comfort.
If you don't like that, maybe try both strings at 53 or 54lbs

Not a fan of NXT and especially in this scenario as it is powerful and a gummy/not slick string. Pair it with a non-round poly like Hyper G and things will lock up for sure and I can see the racquet performing like a locked up rocket launcher. I like both suggestions above.... Velocity and also some sort of round poly of your choice.

Depending how soft a poly you choose for your cross I would put it at a minimum of where you had the Hyper G or RPM and then start with the Velocity main 4 lbs higher and then adjust from there.

I had to do something similar recently. I normally do poly at 45 but took a break and did syn gut 52 mains/48 poly crosses. Some of my balls were flying. They just weren't do what I wanted them to do. Funny thing this is that set up ended up straining my arm because I had to adjust my swing to try and keep adding more spin on the ball. I'm back to poly @45 and I couldn't be happier.

Sooo to sum it up, have you considered trying a softer poly such a cyclone tour or isospeed cream and lowering your tension?

Were you already down to 17 gauge of hyper g? It's much softer than the 16s and 18 is almost a soft poly. Hyper g soft is decent too. Hits a similar ball

I have used isospeed cream in the past maybe 7-8 years ago in a full bed but never liked it in that set up. never tried it as a hybrid.

I’ve moved away from full bed poly due to some wrist issues, but have been very pleased with Velocity 16 x OGSM 17 as a budget hybrid. Good control and comfort for 6-8 hrs. Triax 16 x Ghostwire 18 (or any round poly) is solid and more comfortable than full bed poly with almost same spin as full poly.

I switch out full poly due to arm pain as well (not from playing tennis, unfortunately). At first, I tried full multi and SG, didn't work well for me so I tried hybrids. I tried, Multi/Poly, SG/Poly, and they feel nice to play with but same as you I often hit them out more than I want. So I played with Poly/multi, and Poly/SG, and I think that is what I want. But to be certain, I tried SG/Poly again. And then yes I am definitely staying with Poly/SG or Poly/Multi. Hope that helps.

Are you having arm pain because you are playing too long with dead poly? Rpm Blast goes dead within 8-10 hours and should be cut out. You could try soft polys like HyperG Soft or Cyclone Tour at 40-42 lbs first as they still play well at those tensions and have more comfort.

first thing you want to try is a hybrid like this:

MAINS:
soft co poly
round string
ytex protour but 17L black, super comfy
17 gauge or 16L if you insist, but the lighter weights are easier on the joints
@48-50lbs

CROSSES:
syn gut or multi 17 gauge
@54-55lbs

you would have comfort and string maintenance would be good with ytex
lasts twice as long as any other poly I've tested.

Volkl Cyclone tour 16 strung @ 50 pounds full bed. It quickly settles around 45# after first hour of play, is very soft, but not overly elastic. I think it would fit your game well.

awesome that you figured out your setup. may i ask what multi you tried? how did poly/multi compare to poly/sg? what difference did you notice?

i tried head vlt and solinco vanquish. I don't feel too much difference between poly/multi and poly/sg. if i have to say, i prefer poly/multi, it feel softer than sg, but not that much. but it did break early for me than poly/multi. Plus i bought a reel of sg on sale, so yer I am stick to poly/sg at moment. by the way, i use solinco hygper g soft : )

aha thank you so much. Can I also ask which syn gut? or do they all play alike?

I tried Prince synthetic gut, gamma and tecnifibre. They are all different but i am not good enough to really feel the difference

You need a stiffer poly or a more slick poly on top of that NXT. I would put Kirschbaum Max Power on top of that multi at 54lbs. The Kirschbaum will hold tension nearly as well as the multi, and NXT will last a bit longer with it on top vs HyperG. This will sap some of the power out of that combo, which may also give you a touch more spin over all to allow the balls to dip in, and still be much easier on the arm than full poly.
I would also consider the racquet you are using. At my age, I avoid sticks over 65RA, and use a 62RA prince and Blade.

i have some hyperG soft that i never strung with. I can try a full bed of that next. I also switched rackets from rf97 to a vcore pro 330g, which should help mitigate arm pain. I have been playing with multi/poly set up on the yonex hitting 5 out of the last 7 days and no arm pain whatsoever. I dunno how anyone hits often full poly with the rf97 without their arm breaking off. Funny thing is my yonex and rf97 are pretty much the same weight around 354g strung

I would say fb hyper g soft is still pretty stiff if you want to be safe for arm pain. Atleast in the beginning before it breaks in. not on absolute top end of softest polys. I would string it below 50. maybe 48 max.

RF97 plays very stiff. The Yonex is a nice racquet. I play with a Pure Strike Tour which is also a great heavy racquet.
