Syn Gut: How low can YOU go?

Been playing with Prince syn gut.. was using a bunch of different polys mainly because of the durability but I play much better with syn gut. May have to venture into multi's but that's another topic. Was stringing my Prince Diablo XP OS racquets at 62lbs with prince syn gut but today I decided to try it at 55lbs and loved it! I think I could even go lower.. just curious, how low have you guys gone with prince syn gut, or any other string that isn't a poly?

I'm not sure on an OS, since the tensions are a lot different compared to what I'm normally using, (95 inches and below), but the lowest I've strung with synthetic gut was I believe 48lbs, in a Prestige Mid. It wasn't much different then stringing at around 52-53lbs. A bit less control, a bit more pop, and a lot more string movement! I broke it in about the same amount of time that it takes me to break a normal synthetic in a dense bed however.

I'm a syn. gut lover, too. I usually use 17 ga. stuff in pretty much all of my gear since it gives me decent feel and performance at a great price. It's also inherently a little softer than a 16 gauge option, which is nice for keeping my arm happy now that I use a one-handed backhand a whole lot.

Definitely experiment with some different tensions as long as you can afford it. In fact, one of the reasons I love-love-love having my own machine is that I don't have to pay some knucklehead what I consider to be way too much for a very basic string job. Getting the right string at the right tension in your racquet can make for a very cozy and also confidence inspiring measure of feel at contact.

I don't think I've ventured into the 40's with the tensions in my racquets (at least not since I stopped playing with wood frames!), but I have found that softer racquets usually do better for me with lower tension strings. Feel is quite a personal thing though, so try this 'n that. I'll even drop a few pounds of tension when I'm playing in much colder weather, but I try not to go so loose that my racquet feels like a block of Jell-o with a handle on it.
