So true, already in '74 Tanner had reached the Open semis -- which he only ended up reaching one more time ('79).

'75-77 were prime years for Tanner to do some damage there. He had a career-high 5 titles in '76, then won the Australian Open in January over Vilas. Could have had a great run later at the USO on hard courts.

McEnroe might have gone deep too; instead Orantes got him 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round.

tanner continued to be a factor at the USO in te early 80´s.he pushed Borg at the quarterfinals, in a classic remake of their former year´s clash.Borg took the match but it was an extremely tough one for him.

Next year, Tanner beat Vilas in straight sets and then met Borg again.Borg won their quarter ( third straight quarterfinal meeting at Flushing Meadows) but it went to 4 sets, with three tie breakers.
