Taylor Townsend - Wow!!!

Most endearing player game wise for a long time. Uses the whole court and has a tactical clarity and variety in her game. I'm surprised she's doing well at RG though. I thought that perhaps Wimbledon would see her first good Slam run.

I hope she doesn't flop there... she is only young though and could draw anyone in the first round including a Slam fave. Anyway, she's super young and on the right path but I'm just really hoping for a kind draw at Wimbledon and to see what she can make of it.

I don't know if the full version of this match is readily available anywhere but when I saw it, the whole match lit up my eyes. Townsend for her game, tactics and guile, and Bencic for her seemingly innate champions aura and resourcefulness.

She might actually have trouble at wimbledon because her first step is wicked slow. But man can she flatten out with some pace off both wings. Cornet is a tough cookie…big confidence win in a "road match." Crowd was pulling for Cornet big time.

I don't think her first step is slow, she's athletic. She's slow to change direction in shifting her frame and has a short stride as of now. When she's in control though, which she often is through her big and imposing game, she's sharp. She'll have the game to blitz through rounds of Wimbledon in the future with her first strike tennis and her well developed slice and net-game. So, she'll be a lot more nimble and have less turbo lag when she gets fitter in time.

Were we watching the same match? I get that she's young, but every time I turned it on, she was choking: the second set, the 4 match points, having to serve for the match multiple times. And, lost a pound or fifty, maybe...

It was a great match. At junior level the standard was high and if I recall the match lasted beyond 2 hours. Bencic ultimately showed the better resilience and came through at the critical moments. I don't recall 4 match points being wasted by either player though. Did that happen? Nonetheless, a lot of skills and potential was on display. At least one or maybe both of these players will go on to have highly successful careers.

It's nice they give them centre court. At the USO they stick the girls semis on a field court.

Taylor looks to the extent I can tell from TV like she's gotten in better shape from 2012 when Pmac got himself into a bit hot water...

Very impressive win today handling that crowd.

Please also make a gif of praise hands in the chair after win :)

Thank you for creating a positive, loving fan thread for her. She deserves it. Great showing in her first main draw of a slam. And just turned 18 last month!

I felt the sparkle! I love her best of all the young Americans so far (I love Riske and Jamie, but they don't have Taylor's game or potential). This girl lit me up. Definitely a nice consolation prize for WS going out.

My pleasure! I've been to Honolulu and I must say I love the fresh air and the free tennis courts.

Have not seen her lately but the last time I saw her she looked like she needed to drop about 15-20lbs and improve her overall fitness.

^^Guys, there is a whole thread dedicated to discussing her weight. Can you please give her a break in this one? I think this issue is obvious to everyone and to her and it it will be dealt with either sooner or later. In the discussion thread, right after she won her best and most important match ever, a whole bunch of people just jumped all over this. It's like in the movie Carrie when she wins prom queen and then in what should be her greatest moment, some *****es dump a bucket of blood on her head. Hopefully Taylor will get her revenge on the tennis court.

Best FH since Steffi?

I'm serious about that. That was the biggest stroke I've seen in the WTA for years.

Agreed! Those forehands are just fearless!!

She can hit it hard down the line and crosscourts and with such acute angles as well. Same goes with the backhands. I hope she continues to improve, especially on the serves which is already quite good. She puts tons of spins on the serves which suites clay court. Would love to see more flat serves on grass!

I'm so happy she dropped the USTA and Zina is coaching her.

She is the real deal (unlike Sloane, who has self esteem/mental issues)

It's not the USTA's fault they have no clue on developing players.
The USTA cabal no longer has an idea what it takes to develop a world-class champion. The last time they got close was Jennifer Capriati and everyone witnessed what that pressure did to her. Thank goodness Richard and Oracene Williams preserved the talents of their children and kept them away from the pencil-pushing extremists within the USTA development system.

I can't help but to think that what the USTA is doing to Taylor isn't some remnant of its segregationist past. How on this great Earth does a national tennis body bench the worlds greatest junior player because she doesn't "look" the way they feel she should. This issue goes much deeper than layers of adipose.

Until the USTA can become more inclusive and shed its 1950's way of thinking, we will be left without world-class players for generations.

Agreed, and remember everyone said Davenport was too big, then she started winning slams and shut them up.

Taylor Townsend is Da BOMB!!! Super agressive, moves forward and knocks off volley winners, and SHE CAN HIT THE CR444PPPZ OUT OF DA BALLLLL!!!!
Ya just watched the US Open 2019 match against Halep, and saying that Townsend stood her ground is an UNDERstatement.

Townsend played LOTSA serve & volley, and forced a lot of errors on Halep. Excellent Tie Breaker for the Win!!
