Teaching tennis to girlfriend

This is what I'm afraid of :D
It'll end up with you basically doing this for hours on end on the tennis court while your poor girlfriend tries to explain to you why she can't or that she's trying to but can't:

Ah, just saw your update. Sorry, mate.

I want to teach my girlfriend how to play tennis. We have basically unlimited access to a tennis court during spring/summer. I have played with her a few times before just for fun but I really want to teach her so she can get good.

What should I start with when teaching her? I would like to teach her proper form (ATP forehand and so on) but I don't know if that's the best way to start. Should we use those softer red kids' balls in the beginning or just go with regular balls?
Ahhh....The good ole "ATP forehand". How's it working out for you?

Stay out of it! Hire an ugly Pro!

As long as he doesn't look like this:

If you want to teach the ATP forehand to lady start with Serene Williams. Few non pro/semi-pro use it and fewer women.
Don't teach her, not worth it. I found turning the ball machine on and walk away to collect balls worked best with my chick. No coaching. I sent her to coach and she came back injured, fell over. I laughed, she remembered.

I would let a certified tennis coach teach her. You should watch her lessons and then work/practice with her additionally.
It takes a lot of patience to teach someone very close - you do not want to ruin your relationship. Trust me: I teach my two daughters how to play tennis and it is very challenging and sometimes I feel like I should let someone else do it.
The only time a parent, sibling or anybody close should be teaching is if they do it for a living. I do... :)

I still don't see any pictures of you teaching tennis to your girl. just want to see If you are teaching the proper techniques............

She isn't very athletic but she's been going to the gym with me for a couple of months now and I've seen some real improvement in her stamina and strength. She's told me she wants to take up a real sport and tennis is a ntaural choice because I play and we could play it together..
It still doesn't mean she can do it. I had a long-term girlfriend who wanted me to teach her tennis. She was a swimmer in high-school and was a fitness competitor as an adult. She worked out all the time and was in terrific shape.

Unfortunately, she had never participated in a sport that used hand-eye coordination. We gave up after about two tries.

Great post. That is why I don't believe those guys on other sections of this forum claiming that Phelps or Bolt could have easily become the best tennis players.
