Teams that should prepare for a big ranking fall

Tomorrow, the new rankings based by the computer formula will come out. A lot of over ranked teams are about to take huge drops if not fall out of the rankings all together. Here are a few to keep an eye on, no particular order:

Memphis
Clemson
Kentucky
Alabama (out)
Stanford (possibly out)
Tulsa
UNC Wilmington (possibly out)
Purdue (out for good)
George Washington (out)
Central Florida (out for good)
Miami (out for good)

On a side note, according to the results it looks like Arkansas played Jackson State 4 times in one day. Shame on both coaches for that, that is an embarrassment for college tennis.

Forgot Boise State (out)

Tennessee also should drop a lot

Stanford real in danger to drop a lot
only wins vs non-top 75 teams Uc Davis UNLV and BYU

Good catch CT, I do stand by those predictions even if it's a week away.

Yes your teams are still valid. Some of those teams will have chances this weekend. Like Clemson will play in blue/gray and have a chance to beat USF,Texas Tech or Miss State.

The first part of the season before the first computer rankings is more vital than people realize. Not getting wins early and falling outside the top 50 or lower really puts a lot of pressure on a team for the whole rest of the year

very key win for UCLA vs TCU yesterday at indoors. Without that win there only top50ranked win would have been vs Texas Tech, and they might have been ranked outside top30. Now they will probably land around 20-25.
Other teams that are going to get a big hit by the new ranking:
Kentucky
stanford
Boise ST

Tomorrow's rankings are critical because they will determine the numbers that will be used for the first computer rankings next week. For instance if the pollsters keep teams that obviously don't belong where they are around the same spots then teams that took advantage of their lofty rankings will be rewarded next week

this is shameful for Arkansas, but at least Andy doesn't beat around the bush about a reason to do it:

“I’m pleased with our team’s work effort today,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “It’s hard to play four matches, but we need it to qualify for NCAAs.”

If the NCAA had any power, they would make a rule against scheduling any one school more than twice in one season, no more than two matches in one day, and no more than three matches in a weekend (outside of tournaments).

Can they just start the computer rankings already?! The vote is so absurd. It is just a joke to see where some of these teams get ranked.

Lol for real. The new rankings hardly have movement at all.

I only have a couple of quibbles with the new rankings: I would've put Baylor ahead of Virginia and slotted Mississippi ahead of A&M and Cal. Minor issues and certainly not absurd in my mind.

There's a lot of issues in the rankings from 20 on down. But those will be corrected next week, we will see a lot of change.

Yeah, but after 20 it's always problematic whether coaches or computers do the ranking. I remember a couple of years ago when the sec was incredibly overranked by the computer.

Stanford, btw, will be playing a quality match this Saturday against Cal. I think they will win it and save themselves the horror of dropping out of the rankings.

Do they look over the scores? Such a joke after 20. Memphis has one win over Clemson and stays top 25?? Purdue is 2-5 with a loss to Depaul, who lost to UWGB. Such jokes these people have.

Memphis win over clemson is overrated, but clemson is also overrated
this people do no not watch it...

Iowa beat Utah last Sunday (or Monday), Utah is #59 ..Iowa is still UNRANKED..makes sense...
UCF is still ranked..they are 5-6..best wins over Miami and Buffalo, losses vs UNF, FURMAN, South Alabama, St.Johns and losing 3 sets to Boston College...Furman by the way is unranked....(won 5-2 vs UCF...okay Furman is 2-7...but never in the world UCF can be ranked...)

Any poll that ranks 75 teams is pretty much a joke. There's no way to be on top of 75 programs every week, as well as 125 singles players and 60 doubles teams..... x2 when you include the women.

They should just do a top 25 coaches poll for the teams during the season and pick up the computer rankings on March 31 for all the selection crap. ITA poll is an exercise in futility this early in the season.

Same complaints about rankings every year. They get better as the season progresses as they do every year. Most of the teams that get selected for the NCAA's by the selection committee are the right ones. The two or three teams or so that end up with a complaint at the end of the year are usually ranked around 40-55 and lost a match or two that could have made a difference.

Does anyone else think A&M beat Oklahoma this Friday? I suspect OU will be too emotionally hungover and they get beat. I think they are one of the best teams come NCAA time but that will be a big emotional let down match for them.

I do agree with you to some extent and there is definitely no perfect system. But, I think that it's really not that hard to look at results every week. Any good college coach is viewing all the results anyway to check up on things. So, people involved in the vote SHOULD know the landscape of their profession. I think it does tend to sort itself out in the end for the most part. But, if people who are in the profession are voting and are clueless, what does that say about the profession?? The ITA obviously doesn't give much of a rip.

Depends on how the coaches look at the wins and losses at this point in the season. Many good teams have not had a chance to play other good and ranked teams at this point. I think the computer kicks in next week? That supposed to help. So this early in the season coaches who know teams and their players can't go on W/L's alone. Football and basketball polls have early season debates until more results come in and the computer come into the mix along with the votes. Teams that are truly way over-ranked will be exposed in the next 4 weeks or so.

No one (Indoor Championships excluded) wins the championship in February.

Totally hear what you are saying. Just saying there is enough data for a number of teams to make a way better grouping. Let me use Purdue again as an example. They have played 7 matches already, 4 of them ranked opponents. Of the 4 ranked teams, 3 were in a similar ranking category...of which they lost 15-1. Then, they proceed to lose to Depaul who is unranked. 5-2. Depaul gets worked by UWGB. Yet, their ranking slips 4 spots?? Some teams are WINNING and their ranking slips 4 spots. I think you could objectively say they they are barely worthy of a ranking in the top 75.

I'll be there. Very interested to see what goes down. A&M hasn't played a match in forever and on their home courts, Oklahoma could be walking into a serious buzz-saw. If the Sooners can respond and get a win then it will be nearly as impressive as what they did in Chicago.
Harrison Adams' dire form is a negative for the Aggies though.

I did a rough run of the rankings through yesterday's matches. Here are the biggest movers:

Up:
Wake Forest (up to #12)
Texas (up to #5)
Princeton (into top 25)

Down:
Virginia (out of top 10)
UNC (out of top 15)
UCLA (in mid-20s)
Kentucky (out of the rankings)
Tennessee (massive drop but may stay in)

I have Texas at 6 just a hair behind Georgia.

UNC dropping because they can't actually get a big win

UNC only has one top 30 win - that doesn't get you very far in a ranking system that it primarily influenced by who you beat

Once again, we have to re-learn each year not to worry about early rankings based on very few matches. It is fun for the fans to worry, I guess.
