Tennis Australia tells players that 2021 Australian Open will be February 8-21

Players still stand to earn a lot of money and glory for a two week stay in a luxury hotel.

It's a good deal in the circumstances or, perhaps, any circumstances. They usually pay more of their own way.

There is going to be one tournament a week before AO in Melbourne kinda like what they did with Cincinnati and the US Open in New York.

You must be in a Parallel Universe.

It is very unlikely there will be any ATP or WTA Sanctioned Tournaments in Australia in the lead up to the AO 2021. There might be an AO Qualifying Event in the preceding week although the chances of that are very slim.

TA wants to get the players here, get them through Quarantine, allow them to train in a Bubble, and complete the Tournament. It does not to take any chances of cancellation.

Interestingly, Nine Network Australia is currently running TV Advertisements for only the AO 2021. Nothing is being advertised regarding any other Tennis events. This is a huge indication that nothing else is being scheduled at this stage.

I don't know what parallel universe you are referring to but in the message sent to ATP/WTA players, they have stated that the quarantine period will end on the 1st and they are planning to have a warm-up tournament on the Australian open grounds. I did not make this up. Of course, this could still change and none of this has been confirmed but that is the plan as of right now.

Interesting note at the end of the story is that the Delray tournament will be played BEFORE the Aussie Open.

I was hoping that Australia would come with more sensible way to allow entry for team members .

What happened with "quarantine" and "testing" ? "Bubble" ?

I think that these "over reaction" measures are definitely changing the sport. Modern tennis does require teams around top players and I know some would object and point to "equality" but players all start from somewhere and their athletic ability and talent brings them to the position of having a larger team ...

Biggest "loser" in this situation might be Federer :(

Coming from injury he needs physio, nutritionist, coach, trainer, family ...

Nadal would be the second one ... he had Paris "semi-bubble" but far more than 2 team members ...

Younger guys with US Open experience would benefit the most. And Australians (Kyrgios) suddenly become a force to reckon ...
 
Two concurrent ATP 250s and a 5-day ATP Cup? I wonder how that's going to work. Especially the ATP Cup. Are they just picking the 8 best teams and starting at the QF stage?

Various news outlets have reported that Tennis Australia and the Victorian State Government have confirmed the Australian Open 2021 is set to go from February 8th.

International players flying in for the Event will be subject to a 14 Day Quarantine. And it appears they will be flown in to Australia on Chartered Flights at Federal and State Government expense (ie Taxpayer money). If that is correct, that is not going to go down well with a lot of the locals.

The idea that a bunch of very wealthy professional sports people and their teams are going to be flown into Australia courtesy of Australian tax payers is going to cause a bit of controversey, especially given Tennis Australia has announced full Prize Money is on offer for the AO Event.

Next couple of months are going to be very interesting ... and that is assumming we don't get a local Third Wave of the virus.

While that may be the case for 60% of the field, the other 40% could hardly be called 'very wealthy'. Look at someone like Mikael Ymer (5 years on the tour, total prize money to date is around $850K) or Marcos Giron (6 years on the tour, just over $900k). That comes to ~ $150-170 per year. That in itself isn't close to 'very wealthy', but when you figure in the cost of expenses (coach, travel, etc.), it falls into the 'decent living' category. And it gets worse if you include doubles players (both men's and women's).

So, while I would agree that people like Nadal and Djokovic shouldn't get their airfare covered by the state, it would be a welcome 'plus' for many of the lower ranked players.

I agree with you in that respect. I simply thing the Top players really don't need that extra financial support. And you also have to consider that the Top players will be receiving 5 figure (perhaps even 6 figure) appearance fees just to turn up.
 
What happened to "equality" ...

Nobody is coming to that tournament as "crowned winner" ...

If organizers insist on "equality" for staff (2 people) and quarantine (everybody has same accommodation) - why is it different for how players get there ?

Level playing field !!!

And away with "seeds" - random draw !!!

The Victorian State Government has just announced another Coronavirus outbreak with community transmission after nearly 70 days without a new case.

Currently more than 10 Active cases. Three new unconnected people have tested Positive and have confimed more than 50 close contacts which are now in Self Isolation and being monitored.

If the Government does not get on top of this outbreak quickly, we may get a Third Wave. And if Victoria gets a Third Wave, it will probably be Bye Bye to AO2021.

Next few weeks here are going to be very interesting. Fingers crossed.

(Noted: It appears this infection returned to Victoria through individuals who had contact with infected people in Sydney. It is being reported that the Sydney breakout was seeded from a member of an American Flight Crew who breached mandatory Hotel Quarantine in Sydney to illegaly travel to Sydney's Northern Beaches for some R&R. Amazing to think that AO2021 might be cancelled because of the selfish behaviour of one foreigner who should have known better. Perhaps we should send Trump or Biden the financial bill for any financial losses incurred.)

This is Australia. We treat people here in accordance with the way they behave.

There have been local news stories all morning including interviews with Players that have come into Australia. Many players themselves have confirmed it was made perfectly clear to them what would happen if anyone on their particular Chartered Flight tested Positive to the virus.

So, perhaps you would be best to focus your energies on making your own Country a better place, and leave us to focus on ours Thanks!

If the Players that are already here don't follow the proper Procedures ... there will be no AO this year ... and they will be to blame ... and we can all move on.

Sad thing ... this was always going to happen. Tennis Australia has made its own bed ... and now it will have to lie in it.

Trump is well known for not paying his bills. You should instead send it to Mexico and it will paid promptly after they pay for the big beautiful border wall that was constructed in Trump’s mind.:sneaky:

I am not a fan of the Australian government (especially the current Federal), and I hate most Australian players but uninformed fools’ comments make my blood boils.

Clearly, the rest of the world is suffering greatly from this pandemic and Australia has been in a very fortunate position, yet there are fvck wits like yourself who thinks a yellow ball game is more important than the health security of the nation.
