The rift between Davis Cup outcast Bernard Tomic and Tennis Australia has escalated dramatically, with Tomic's father John threatening to sue the governing body for defamation over an email misreporting of this week's ATP tournament name as the "Hall of Shame Tennis Championships".

Tomic accepted a wildcard into the grasscourt "Hall of Fame" event in Newport, Rhode Island, after an outburst at Wimbledon resulted in the world No.25 being overlooked for the Davis Cup quarter-final against Kazakhstan in Darwin, starting on Friday. Tomic has drawn fellow Queenslander John-Patrick Smith in the Newport first round.

After John Tomic's pre-Wimbledon criticism of TA's funding of his daughter Sara, in particular, led to performance director Pat Rafter's subsequent vow to cut off all financial support for the Tomic family, Bernard followed his third round Wimbledon loss to eventual champion Novak Djokovic with an extraordinary attack on the operation headed by chief executive Craig Tiley, and president Steve Healy, while effectively describing Rafter as their stooge.

The next instalment came in a written statement sent from Tomic senior toFairfax Media on Monday, which read: "The Tomic family is very disappointed by TA's continual shaming and misrepresentation of Bernard.

"Bernard has already been punished by his non-selection for the upcoming Davis Cup tie. Bernard accepted his sanction in a professional manner and was willing to move on. We point out that TA did inform Bernard on meeting in Wimblodon (sic) (Craig T. Steve H.) that his comments hurt people at TA and that, as a result, Craig T clear said to Bernard on meeting we will hurt you, not just that you no playing Davis Cup.

"It seems TA have commenced living up to their threat. How typically childish and arrogant of TA to permit publication of such material and then expect to get away with it. We have no alternative but to refer the matter to our legal people for advice."

The "Hall of Shame" error appeared in TA's daily results email on Monday, and was quickly corrected in a revised message 14 minutes later, before the following apology was posted on tennis.com.au.

"Tennis Australia sincerely apologises for the typo in the daily results service today. This has now been corrected and we wish both Bernard Tomic and JP Smith all the best in the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport.

"This unfortunate error has been widely circulated on social media and there is some discussion as to how such a mistake could occur. We have a very upset staff member who made a simple clerical error.

"The result listing before the Hall of Fame Championships, the Sharm El Sheikh event in Egypt, won by Astra Sharma, should provide some explanation as to how this error occurred. There was no malicious intent."

But that was not enough to appease the Tomics, who have claimed to have been abandoned by the national association. Bernard, 22, had initially said he would boycott the Kazakhstan tie, before agreeing to play out of respect for retiring great Lleyton Hewitt and the prestige of the competition. He was then dumped for what was described as a "disrespectful" and "disparaging" attack on TA.

Rafter said in a News Ltd report published on Sunday that tennis needs players that "Australia can be proud of", admitting cultural change was required and that his major philosophy was to replace the sense of entitlement with one of opportunity. He said he was "happy" to sit down with the Tomics "to try to talk". "But that may never happen," Rafter admitted. "I'd like to think that people can change. I've got to stay true to what I believe in."

Australian No.2 Nick Kyrgios posted a tweet on Sunday morning that was swiftly deleted. "Another negative comment out of Rafters mouth," Kyrgios wrote."Does this guy ever stop #everyoneisaworkinprogress."

Tennis Australia was preparing to comment on Monday night.

Absolutely agree, how much do these divas give back to Tennis Australia when all the endorsements come flooding in? Very little I suspect.

TA living with in the past

This is the same with numerous sports administrations who think the game revolves around them

Rafter gives no credibility

His comments are unfortunate

Yeah Pat Rafter has no credibility after winning 2 US Opens and reaching the finals of 2 Wimbledons..... remind me again how many finals, or semi finals, of grand slam tournaments either Tomic or Ni...

All a bit tiresome isn't it?

I hope they do sue. That's clearly not a 'typo'. How do you type a word and 'accidentally' mistype a single F into a SH?

The suspension of him from the davis cup team is imo pretty ridiculous also. They suspended him because he criticised them, they didnt bother responding to his claims or even attempting to see if there was any truth to what he said. The suspension would be equivilent to tens of throusands of dollars in lost income, match payments etc

That kind of thing would never happen that way in a corporate organisation, I dont see why Tennis Australia thinks its an acceptable practice to treat tennis players that way. Imagine working for microsoft or something, you criticise your boss's performance, and they immeadiately suspend you without considering your side of the story

Australia is a class-divided society like any other and TA is run by a mix of private sector business types and their selected favourites among the former Australian tennis elite.

It's a bit of a club where you get on by conformity to codes built into the private school system and hostility to it is more evident in the young non-WASP players.

It's an elite that runs things quite ruthlessly while talking all along about values like 'privilege to play for Australia' and complaining about 'how much money these youngsters get'.

Hall Of Shame is a better name for the tournament and the organisers would be well served to consider a name change. Tomic just doesn't understand how to play the politics of this type of thing. If he makes a light hearted response he gets a PR win from Tennis Australia's faux pas...but he's just not smart enough to take a free kick when one is given to him.

I found that a lot of older generation people love power and love abusing their power. They don't like it when young people gain power or popularity. Older people in Tennis Australia want to hold onto their power and abuse their power.

When I was studying 3D animation, our lecturer did not give us a proper lesson, instead he was just busy boasting his success story of working in Disney movies, big advert agencies, etc. The students were left without proper material and were often struggling to complete tasks. I decided to buy an advanced book on 3d modeling and animation and made an advanced 3d rigging and animation and when I was ready to submit the finish product the bloody lecturer asked me not to submit it because it is too advanced. The fact is, he was the only 3d expert in our rural region and he wants to be the only one and does not want any competitor.

Tennis Australia were right. A first round defeat for Tomic. It is one for the Hall of Shame.
Yes how dare a player lose in the first round. BURN HIM!

Tennis Australia are becoming more and more pathetic. A typo (following a QWERTY keyboard) would be Hall of dame, Hall of Game, Hall of vame or hall of rame. How can you "accidentally" type the letter S AND then go and type the letter H? Bullsh!t

Tennis Australia's "dog ate my homework" excuse was that the Hall Of Fame event was listed after the "Sharm El Sheikh" event in Egypt and the person conflated the words "Sharm" and "Fame" to produce "Shame." More likely is that someone made the joke public because they forgot to remove the joke from the document.

Tennis Australia has lost a lot of respect after this. What kind of an excuse was this? This is not befitting a national sports organization. It's supposed to be promoting tennis, not throwing dogshit at one of its most highly ranked current stars.
