Tennis Coaching

by any chance this is the right forum, I would like to find out from other coaches (or players) how long it takes them to teach someone from beginner level to intermediate level of play, and from intermediate to advanced level of play, on average.

i do know that players learn at different paces and in different ways. but isn't there an almost acceptable length of time a(minimum) if the players attend two four hour sessions a week, and perform competetive drills?

at what proportion would you estimate the input of the coach towards the improvement of the player?

There is no magic "time formula" for getting a beginner to intermediate. It depends on the person entirely.

If you are seriously looking at a time frame, take the learning metrics of an individual compared to the amount of skill they should develop, and put their performance on an upward sloping graph.

Coaches input should be enough to assist them with getting the concept of new skills, but then allowing them to internalize the lesson and get the shots down.

I think there's a very big range.

It could take someone a few years to go pro or It could take a lifetime for someone to never get past weak 4.0. :)

Coaching is only a small part of the equation.
The PLAYER has to embrace the practice and knowledge, APPLY it, and go out on the court and practice tennis with other players at least 2/3 MORE time than the time he spends with you.
Also, 2 lessons a week, at 4 hours each, is worthless.
Better 4 lessons a week, for 2 hours each.
Better yet, 5 lessons a week, 1.25 hours each.

Beginner to Intermediate

Had an Italian student and a Swedish student this semester, both about 20 years old, neither of which had ever played tennis, who both had amazing strokes and shots after 12 weeks ... a 6 week beginner's class and then a 6 week intermediate class, twice a week for 1-1/2 hours each.

The only thing they would need when they go back to Europe is to join a club (no public courts where they live) and play play play, so they can learn to get into position to use their very nice storkes.

^ And I'd be willing to bet that they were usually hitting more than just twice a week during that 12 week period. Players who are on the court only 4x a month will progress very slowly while those that hit the courts 4x a week can advance very quickly with proper guidance.

Beginner to Intermediate

Yes they were. But that's another issue. All of my European students seem to listen and practice with more diligence than most of my "others."

BrisVegas

No, but I just looked up BrisVegas ... Brisbane, Au ... casino? Do they have tennis there.

I think I'd LOVE to teach tennis in Brisbane! And they would love what I can do for them!

Currently ... teach at a major (southern) California State University.

Oh, lol, ok. I have no idea why I thought you were from Brisbane!
Sam Stosur and Pat Rafter both trained in Brisbane, actually, even though they are both from other cities in the same state..

Yes, they have tennis there!
