Tennis future is in good hands

This year has been majestic for Djokovic and he has added multiple records to his name.

But this is also the season when the younger generation has taken a step forward.

1. Alcaraz in 2022 won 6820 pts to become number 1. The rankings aside the pts show he was not really dominant. This year he has won 8865 ranking pts to become number 2. Things he did this year.

Won First Wimbledon beating 7 time champion Djokovic - never done before in tennis
Reached 3/3 slam semis he entered. He is just 20. The record for youngest to reach all 4 semis is held by Nole and Carlos will try to get close to it by reaching AO semis.
Is now the number 1 contender at 3 of the 4 slams next year RG Wimby and USO according to betters.
Defended a masters title in Madrid.

2. Sinner this year has reached 6490 ranking points. Just 500 shy of Alcaraz 2022 (Wimbledon added).

Sinner reached first slam semis finals
Won first masters 1000
Reached many important finals but hasn't found a way to win them.
Reversed the trend vs Medvedev and got first win over Djokovic.

Sinner has improved a ton this season from last when he was barely inside top 10. Now he is top 4 firmly.

There has been some churn in the rankings but all the top 10 except Djokovic are now under 30. Last year it was Nole and Rafa. These are the guys in whose hands tennis is, but even amongst these guys, the youngest Alcaraz Rune and Sinner have had better year than almost anybody. They will rule the tennis for next generation.

A season where all the records got broken, it's very easy to despair and find no solace in Alcaraz making new records or new gen still learning to win slams. If that's you, it might be because right now your sights are set at 24 slams, but the 24 didn't happen overnight. It took 16 years for Djokovic to accumulate it.

Looking by season by season, next season will be far more competitive than 2020/2021/2022.

Next AO - number 1 betting favorite Djokovic
Next RG - number 1 betting favorite Alcaraz
Next Wimbledon - number 1 betting favorite Alcaraz
Next USOpen - number 1 betting favorite Alcaraz.

If Nadal makes a comeback to form it's what tennis needs.
I don't know. You want more competition from old guys?

I would say let the kids tough it out vs Nole. They are getting better. Nole played only sinner and Raz in slams this year. Sinner was not bad but Carlos beat him once and was beaten once.

Alcaraz and Sinner both over 80% win rate, very impressive
Being over 80% is kind of a big deal too when only the big 3 and Murray were able to consistently do it over the years. Alcaraz has done it the past 2 years which is another sign he will be an ATG. Only Ferrer in 2012, Medvedev in 2021 and Sinner in 2023 did it outside of that. I can't count 2020 because it was an incomplete year, where Rublev finished above 80%. Same for Soderling in 2011 who finished above 80% but skipped NA and fall season.

Quadman ready to slay in 2024!

Yet both got completely owned by a 36 years old. I couldn't care less about them being able to beat some mugs. When they face any kind of competition, they lose.
This is brain dead take. They are not going to win every tournament while Novak is so strong. But Novak was already beaten in RR by sinner.

If anything Nole pushing these kids will make them battle hardened by the time he declines. Just 1 more year of domination I believe.

What happens if Djokovic wins the lion’s share of the big titles in the next two years like he looks capable of doing? Is tennis still in good hands or not in that case? It will be compelling viewing for me to keep watching him win if he plays as aggressively and at as high a level as he did all year long. I want him to keep winning unless someone else plays at a higher level than him consistently - I don’t root for him to lose just because he is old in tennis terms. If anything, it is an inspiration to watch an old guy play as such a high level just like it was when Federer, Brady, MJ, Lebron, Messi, Woods (last Masters win) did it.

They will rule the tennis for next generation.

Rune's season was a bit topsy turvy, but you make some great points. I think the state of tennis is still pretty fragile, though.

Well, Federer consistently did that since 2012. In every slam, he succumbed to Djokovic.

Really? I'm very pessimistic about the future of tennis, both player wise and political wise. This is also reflecting wider society.

If Nadal makes a comeback to form it's what tennis needs.
Why, by the weak era whiners here that will only make it worse if a surgically fixed 38 yr old dude comes back and wins. Unless of course they are genuinely “concerned” for the state of tennis (lmao) because their fave is not the one winning. Rafa fans will salivate for a 15th FO even though that tourney has long been rendered pointless for over a decade (not a knock on Rafas brilliance there), similarly Fed fans would love if if 43 yr old Fed comes back and repeats 2003-2007. The concern for tennis is hogwash and you can see that if you simply go through few threads.

Come on man lol Holger Rune!!!!!
:D
The vast majority of posters here have never even watched a Rune match or watched him in the summer when he won not a single match from Wimbledon to Basel. Just today I read here that Holger "lacks firepower" and has a weak FH. And that came from Djoker fan. That person needs to educate themselves on what their idol said about Rune.

Djokovic just said last week and paid him the ultimate compliment! In fact, I don't recall Novak ever praising a rival to this extent, not even Roger or Rafa:

"Every single match we play against each other is a marathon now. It's amazing. He's an incredibly dynamic player, very quick, very powerful, so aggressive. He has one of the best returns that I ever faced, to be honest. His forehand is a laser, it's explosive. He reminds me of myself, like looking in the mirror."

"And Holger has an amazing return. He has improved his serve and his overall game. I think in the last month that he's been working with Boris, there's obviously a benefit to this relationship that they're having."

When asked what specifically reminds him of his own game, Novak said, "Specifically, Rune's quickness around the court, his creativity on the run, the versatile two-handed backhand, his rousing return game and explosiveness- those things remind me of myself."

It would be in good hands. Djokovic's hands.

The knee jerk reaction is they are mugs since they can’t beat Djokovic black and blue every time.

The vast majority seems to not have watched more than 5 matches of Alcaraz here, let alone those of Rune's.

You cannot educate those who don't want to be educated.

Those legs :D

All I care about is that Rune is wearing booty shorts and I'm absolutely loving it. Hope it becomes a trend

Winning 80% is good but sinner is saying how about 90%
