Tennis is in big trouble when Federer retires

Was thinking the same thing!
Watching the sport from 1980, was fan of Borg at that time, but first and foremost the game itself. If you love enough this sport then will always find someone with game, results, and attitude that will impress and marvel you again ,and again. So it is with life, there will be it after us.

Please explain your logic.
Because F is choking tennis. That is obviously not his personal responsibility, no it is because too many people think that tennis=Federer, not in the least for the marketeers with their one trick pony marketing approach to tennis. Yes other top players get paid well but F is in the center of it all. Same with many 'fans', or shall I say glory hunters? Many proclaim to love tennis but leave it alone once F retires. I say, good riddance, we can be without those 'fans'.

Now, everybody pretends I am crazy thinking this but you watch after F retires and the 'shock effect' lingers off the sane minds will prevail and realize the sport needs to move on without F, and that opens up new opportunities where young folks can be targeted again not balding late-middle and old aged retirees who love their ads about Rolexes, high end Mercedeses, golf, investment banking and private jets.

The sport needs to become young again and not be dominated by old champions, it needs to become a first rate sport again not some second rank, golf alternative old men sport as it is presented under the dark clouds of F marketing.

I agree. There is no one to take up the mantle after Fed leaves. For most tournaments, you might as well just have Rafa, Dkokovich, and Murray run a 10k while dribbling a tennis ball to see who wins.

Tennis will be fine....at least on the mens side. When Michael Jordan retired it was the end of the NBA for a lot of fans, but, look at the NBA now, more popular than ever.

Tennis is constantly evolving. The next big evolution will be players with the defensive ability of Nadal or Djokovic, and the shotmaking arsenal of Federer...

If you watched Shanghai, you would have noticed the sparse crowd for Novak , Rafa and other matches , but Federer matches always hosted at prime time , seated to full capacity.

The crowd for Fed matches were lot of youngsters with several of them carrying banners with creative photoshops of Fed , dressed as Superman Fed.

Read the article below. Hopefully you will notice how hollow your theory and bias is.

FEDERER SEES HIS SUPERHERO SELF

http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Te...riday-Federer-Superhero-Djokovic-Chinese.aspx

"It's hilarious, these Photoshops," said Federer. "I smile as well. Maybe I don't show it as much, but inside I'm laughing. I'm crying in laughter. I think it's very funny, very entertaining and very creative."

Federer’s favourite part of his personal Justice League: “When I look nice and strong. Superman looked great."

It's not a question of the popularity of tennis after Federer, it's more a question of the disappearance of more complex styles of play.

There's a big differnce between a rally between djokovic and nadal, and one between ferrer and anyone else.

ferrer is like the donkey of tennis. no skills; no talent; no intellect...just a worker.

Don't agree with that either. He just produces predictable, boring matches almost always. But, you don't get to his level on hard work alone.

Lol at using China as an example. But eh OK, so when he retires we will close Shanghai? I don't think so!

Tennis is next to non existent in China.

In the end you know I am right, as soon as F retires all this "the end of tennis BS" is only going to be spouted by butt-hurt glory hunters the rest of the people will simply go on watching tennis.

I dont think you are reading at all.

You said all the players have following. I showed you example of Shanghai where only Fed's matches are crowded.

Not just at Shanghai. If you noticed Toronto, Cincinnati and New York, Fed had to bear the brunt of playing all prime time night matches.

So, are the organizers also glory hunters ? Are all fans that come for prime time matches balding middle aged and old aged retirees ?

Tennis will go on, but it is quite obvious that the viewership of the sport is going to take a dip till a new star emerges. And that star is not any of the current top 5.

Sure only F has fans.

Hate to break it to you but tennis marketing does not make the bulk of the money from tournament crowd attendance.

There are plenty of stars.

But yes some people are myopic and only see F. Frankly I hope those one trick pony fans stay away after F retires.

How about you, do you quit watching tennis as well if F retires? After all what is there to tennis apart from F for you?

You puke stuff with not even an iota of facts or stats. Complete garbage.

Take a look at who played the prime time matches for the last few months in different parts of the world.

Tell me, why is Fed made to play all the prime time matches ?

Sigh......

I know one thing, one thing is going to be great when F retires, we no longer have to do those silly discussion about Federer=tennis.

What a relieve!

The notion that because somebody plays primarily a baseline game that they lack skill is completely fallacious. Given the technology, the athleticism and court conditions, baseline tennis appears to be the best style of tennis to produce a win. I would like to see more versatility but even S & V is not a more skilled brand of tennis. Players today are better in some areas and worse in others but it all comes down to what is going to produce the most W's. Lack of skill has absolutely nothing to do with prevalent style of tennis today.

Tennis is in big trouble when the big 3 (Nole, Nadal, Fed) retire since there is NO talent to replace them currently or in the future.

Problem is not Federer retiring but rather defensive and fitness based players like Nadal, Djokovic, Ferrer, Murray, Simon doing well. It becomes ultimate boredom especially when they play 5-setters with each other in grand slams.

People are unfairly putting the blame on Ferrer for the boring match between him and Djoko. Djokovic plays many matches which are as exciting as watching paint dry. His match against Berdy in Beijing was one such match and I posted a gif for watching paint dry on the match thread during the match.

Yes, Ferrer is a retriever but I've never seen him as boring to watch, can't say the same for Djokovic.

it is no joke that FED , being no 3 seed has played the prime time matches , while NOVAK and RAFA played at less important times ?

As we all know Nadal played one match, which was the first of the night matches. i.e. prime time. The crowd for that match was equal to the crowd for Federer's match. Rafa's limited practice sessions, 2 only I think had more spectators than many of the matches.

He also needed considerable security.

People always say that when a big champion retires, but new players usually show up and become their new favourites/champions.

Also, Federer mostly plays from the baseline himself lately and doesn't show the variety he used to back in the days, so watching him is not that different from watching anybody else these days. Except that every now and then he shows a moment of brilliance, but all of the top 3-4 do that in my opinion.

It will be sad when he retires, but tennis will survive

It will be sad. Ticket sales and tv ratings will certainly take a plunge but tennis will survive. It's great that he is still playing but he is such a different player and is certainly a shadow of his former self. To see how different his game is go on youtube and look at any Federer vs Hewitt video from 2004-07 then compare that to any match between them from 2010 on. You can see Federer still moves and serves very well but his game is so different. His forehand and courtspeed movement were so venomous back then it was ridiculous. He was literally hitting out in all his fh and they were routinely landing in.
I thought Hewitt would be a good example because they are roughly the same age.

Only Fed fans will be in big trouble. So what ?! Who cares about Fedfans' troubles!
Haha, well spoken.

Frankly I won't miss some of those 'fans' who get upset at people only because they are not a fan of F. It seems they feel everybody must be a fan of F and if someone is not he is branded as some kind of a troll. That is intolerance.

Who knows, perhaps it is all over after WTF.

Here is an idea, why not get F to end the year as number one, big spectacle, "good for tennis", fans happy, marketing happy and then he retires, then the whole F circus is finally over and we can start a good tennis future without F.

The 8:00 PM match is the most important for the organizers. Rafa did not get that.

Shanghai is known to have many empty seat, even when Nadal play.

The match between Federer/Nole in the semifinal had all the seats filled. It felt almost like O2 Arena in London !

The spectators didn't care of the "importance"!

Speaking of organizers, the Shanghai Masters is sponsored by Fed's sponsor Rolex. He who pays the piper calls the tune!

I completely second that.
