Tennis Is Not About Winning At All!!!

Tennis is just like life in the sense...

"It's not about winning, tennis and life are all about building character and the person that you become along the way".

Attention all tennis players!!!

I had to stop reading the book that I was reading by Jim Loehr and share this profound wisdom with you guys.

Which is this.

Tennis is not about winning matches.

It's all about building character for winning in life.

It's all about the person that you become on the inside that matters and leads to true fulfillment in your career and your life.

This is why most sports athletes feel empty after they win something or reach some certain goal in their career.

"They focus on the external fulfillment instead of internal development".

You must understand this key point now too if you want to reach your full potential as a player and a person.

Write this down and post it up somewhere so you can read it at least 2 times a day for mental clarity.

Here is the great thing about playing tennis though.

And it is also the reason why I encourage all kids to play it.

It's that one sport that....

"Will reveal and then build character".

i agree, this is why i dont want to be a pusher and play the game like a king, like a dragon and not like a coward. with fire and with heart!

i dont want to cheat! i want to win only when i deserve to win.

some people would do everything to win. i am kinda happy tennis is my lover and not my wife if you know what i mean.

i love it,and everytime i play it i feel happy. and angry. :D

its not about winning!and you know why?when you will be old trophies will be worth nothing to you anymore. you will have only your memories and your old apart falling body..so lets do the best out of this and have fun. hit every ball like it would be your last and dont cry if you lose and be humble when you win.

I get what you’re saying and all that is great attitude to have, but every time I am on the courts I expect and play to win. When I don’t win, I reassess what I did right and what can do better next time. I’m not a sore loser and I’m certainly not a sore winner. I am a huge believer in good sportsmanship, but believe I am UNSTOPPABLE when I step on the courts. That is my philosophy on this game.

For me it's all about if I hit my overheads.

You don't get many opportunities to hit overheads. If I succeed on my few opportunities, I'm happy. If I mess them up I'm unhappy, and having won the match is not a consolation.

Its a bit of a Barnum effect though.

Being a footballer is about building character. Being a runner is about building character. Being a boxer is about building character. Being a scientist is about building character, being a doctor or a nurse builds character , running your own business builds character and so on.

IF you've got game, then you don't need to play one, just being able to hit well is thrilling enough.

IF not, there's always Pickleball.

my daily dosage of hitting fh/bh >1200 times w/in shortest time is million times more important than playing games/matches or watever dressing/gearing up 'tennisingly'. it's simply like those who addicted to cigies or drugs, purely personal needs n has nothing 2 do w/ any1 else:-D:-D:-D:-D....................

Why is this unique to Tennis and not any other sport?

I play tennis to lose

lose weight:?)))...........not bad idea. 99.99% of tennis population should enjoy dis wonderful sport for mentally/physically fitness n happiness. if not, for some psychological/financial/etcetc deficit or watever reasons force urself merged w/ the shade of some atp pros, ask urself wat u can win or lose:?))) it might b 1 of the causes so many ppl got te/ge etcetcetc, 4 nothing. big loss, manohman:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D......................

Its basically the process oriented player vs the outcomes oriented player. I'm more into process, always trying to improve and learn. I assume wins will come with that approach but maybe later than with the outcomes oriented approach.

that depends on how to define the 'outcomes' which directly affect the 'process' that might so easily go wrong. i come across so many 'tennis/non-tennis parents' ended up no outcomes but outcry w/ their injured kids..........also that's 1 of the reasons why tennis' declining:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:.........................

People don't neatly fall into only two groups like you think.

I'm an outcomes oriented player who focuses on process. Good process tends to yield desirable outcomes.

Yes its probably not a binary variable but a more continuous variable. I'm sure there are extreme ends of each spectrum. I know a guy that only practices, never plays matches. Process oriented to the extreme. I know lots of players that never practice but hyper-aggressively try to beat you every time they step on the court and throw tantrums if they don't. Outcomes oriented to the extreme.

Then there is the vast majority of players that combine strong desire to win matches with a strong desire to get better (or a weak desire to win matches with a weak desire to get better). They will play matches as well as practice and likely lean one way or the other as far as what drives them.

And I totally agree that good process leads to good outcomes. To me that statement means you are more process oriented. Outcomes oriented people take shortcuts.

It's not about winning even when you're playing tournaments?

only win or lose matters in a comp or tournament. u win u stay otherwise out, so try to win by all means.

test ur new weapon when practice/social/fungame, stick to the most reliable old weapon in comp/tournament.

Good process tends to yield desirable outcomes.

Agreed. The way you can separate the process-oriented from the outcome-oriented is that the outcome-oriented who focuses on process and loses will then switch to some other process to get the result he wants. The process-oriented person will probably stick with the process and assume the results will take care of themselves.

It's not about winning even when you're playing tournaments?

What difference does it make? If it's not about winning when playing casually or socially or league, why would it matter when playing tournaments?

Yes, I want to play more but participating in a RR would accomplish the same thing.

I dunno... keeping calm and poised during match play is not the same as just hitting around. Same in life — when you’re having brunch with friends, it’s easy to keep your cool. When it’s hard times or a lot on the line, can you keep cool and play the same proper “strokes”?..

no idea abt watever 'on the line' as not playing any proper matches yet...........only addicted to fh/bh topspins far far from being able to play proper matches. who knows in the future might b addicted to the whole package that match play required:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D.................

assumable if 'proper strokes' or 'improper strokes' or watever crafted deeply into the bones then no matter where/when/who/what u play, they won't change much as u can't do wat u dunno how to do, right:?)))...................

i regularly hit w/ quite a few teen tournamentors:)) n surely right for them to try all the new tricks in practice matches or social watever n only apply them aft being successful/confident..........otherwise the big mommas cry out even louder aft $,$$$ coaching draining + driving 12 hrs to/from the tour, only find the boys 1st/2nd rounders every time:-D:-D:-D:-D.................

When playin in tournaments I like to win so I can play more.

On the other hand I think I like even more hitting the wall than playing matches.

People are strange.
Tennis is for strange people.

There is no right or wrong answer. Each of us have our own personality and what we are trying to get out of anything we pursue in life is also different. Those two things will dictate your approach to tennis too depending upon the priority you have placed on it among other things in your life.

Another great example of Dual Objectives and how seeing the world via a monocular is misleading.

Tennis is very much about winning, and at the very least, trying to win. If you are not concerned with winning, you can be pretty sure that your opponent, any audience, his team and your team are.....
Now in the view of what is the other objective in tennis, well that would be whatever the main reason you play the game. Do you play to get in shape? Learn a skill? Socialize? There is a good chance that all these play a role to some extent, but you can be sure, winning is always in that mix to some extent. I'd even go so for to say that your not much of a player if you not trying to win on some level, even if you are not overly concerned with the final score.

If it's supposed to be "just for fun" why keep score? :p

it might be fun to keep score to some ppl but not me. only current point matters to me.....lolololol n keep it alive as long as possible. that's the only way to avoid 'down time' when must waste time to pkup the balls:mad::mad::mad::mad:...............

when i play sets w/ others i always ask opponent to keep the score n funny that found quite often 'cheat' going on @game points, even some adults, but i never correct them n dat's really hilarious manohman. who cares as not worth even 1c or any ranking involved anyway n cost me nothing to make them happy then worth it:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D........................quite reasonable the 'cheat' happens to the 'pro prospered' teens but who cares. good on them if can 'cheat' all the way to $lams....lolololol boyohboy:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:.......................

If this board has taught me anything, tennis is about whining.

yep, make sure winning in tournament by all means if touring especially for those kids whose parents invested so much already wasted so much $$$$/time/effort/emotion/watever/etcetc n always want to c some results..........n also if lose the ranking will drop:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:.............

practice games/matches the other way around as they'r good chance to find out the 'holes' n refine/buildup weapons etc, same as every military war games........the more 'bloody' in the war game the less real blood in the war, enjoy it:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D....................
