LONDON, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Indian doubles specialist Leander Paes will juggle his tennis career with Bollywood over the next few months as he attempts to complete a career grand slam and forge a new life as a movie star.

Paes, who is playing with Czech Lukas Dlouhy at the ATP World Tour Finals, will team up again with long-time partner Mahesh Bhupathi at next year’s Australian Open which is the men’s doubles major to elude him.

However, at 37, Paes is already preparing for life after tennis on the silver screen and will star in the forthcoming movie Rajdhani Express.

“It’s true, I started shooting my first movie already. It’s something exciting. It’s something new,” Paes, who has 12 grand slam titles in men’s and mixed doubles, said at London’s O2 Arena.

“I’m 37 years old. I can’t keep playing tennis for the rest of my life. In India, I’m very lucky. I have a big following. I have a lot of people that enjoy what I do.”

Paes has earned $6 million from his life as a globe-trotting sportsman and national acclaim back home and he believes tennis and acting have many similarities.

“Movies for me was a natural progression, to go from tennis to movies to entertain my fans,” he said. “As you can see, on the court, I have fun, I’m very passionate about what I do.”

While Paes admits he enjoys singing and dancing, he says his first step into showbiz will not be strictly Bollywood.

“With the movies I’m just learning, I’m an apprentice,” he said. “Right now I’m doing a serious drama movie, there’s not one song where I have to dance in it. Thank God.

“I enjoy dancing, it’s fun, but first I want them to take me as a serious actor.”

Paes has “co-starred” successfully with Dlouhy, who he describes as “like a brother”, but has opted to start next year with fellow Indian Bhupathi even though he said it might not be a long-term reunion.

“To start off, the only grand slam that Mahesh and myself have not won is the Australian Open,” he said.

“Back in India, Mahesh and myself have a huge following for many years. We are followed around the world. But I don’t know whether that’s going to be a long-term partnership through the year or not. It was a last-minute decision.”

“Last year Lukas and I won two grand slams (French Open and U.S. Open). But in the last five or six months, somewhere after the French Open, we’ve lost our mojo. We’ve lost something.”

They will hope to regain it on Tuesday when they take on Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner in a match they must win after losing their opening round robin match match against Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

Dude won two of the four doubles slams this year, and he's getting both training and fashion advice from some keyboard jockey. Lol.

Dude, that's people do in a forum. We are all not playing in the ATP tour. But we get to criticize players.

Dude take the beer goggles off and seriously take a look at his fat ass. He doesn't look like an athlete. His face looks swollen. You don't to be much of an athlete to play doubles in any case.

Even Nadal stopped wearing sleeveless long time ago.

I personally find this guy somewhat arrogant and affected (you know what I mean, just observe his mannerisms when he walks around the court). Just my honest opinion.

Also, we criticise comments by other posters.

I'm a personal trainer, I understand bodyfat. But what do you know about him? Maybe he has injuries that make running or other training difficult? Maybe he chooses not to care.

I'm outcome focused, and two slams means he's at the peak of his chosen profession at whatever weight he happens to be. Maybe if he trained twice as much he'd get injured and not be. Who knows.

He is a big fish in the small pond of the indian tennis community.

If he were American he would be as big a celebrity as Mike Bryan if he were an only child

Thanks for the link. Paes and Bhupathi partnering ... wow that's news.

Wonder what Zeeshan will have to say about the Bollywood part. He and Dimple Kapadia certainly could do a remake of BOBBY for the older generations.

as we're apparently surfing on some indian waves in this thread, may i make benefit of the situation to ask you if your nickname is somehow related to the homonym islands ? ;)

Reminded me of a story told by VJ Amritraj.

It was the week before Wimbledon and VJ had gone to a Cinema in Leicester Square to watch Octo***** with some other players - VJ had a part in the film.

Halfway through the film VJ gets his head cut off, and one of the other players jumps up shouting "Yes, I'm in, I'm in", much to the bewilderment of the other people in the audience.

The guy running around shouting was just outside the main draw, and now VJ was dead, he was in!

They may have named their island after me, I'll have to confirm that.
silly me... how did i miss the most obvious hypothesis ?! :)
The Sentinel Islands are part of the Andaman Islands chain.
There are two of them: North Sentinel and South Sentinel. The Sentinelese people live on the North island.

Sentinel is certainly not from the North island as we are currently kinda "in contact" with him... :p

Suresh- you're right but what is BW? Black & White?

Herr Sentinel- who could say no to a 'juicy' lady like her?! :)
