Damn it, i'm not going to edit, but my Bonus for the most slams question is wrong. I did it as most slams won in a Year prior to reaching number one.

Yeah:) That was wilander...but overall its rafa right? with 4 fo and 1 wimby

Great quiz, drwood. I thought Sampras made number one without winning a slam in the previous year, but I wasn't sure (and for some reason thought number 2 was about the only player prior to Rios) so I went with Lendl. Oh, well.

And Magician, Wilander's 7th and final slam - the 1988 U.S. Open - gave him the number one ranking for the first time.

Damn, well of course...i sat up in the middle of the night watching it with my dad, 8 years old:)

Answers (honor system, please):

1. E (Wilander)
Bonus: 7 slams
- Becker and Nadal are second with 5 slams

2. F (Sampras)
Sampras first became #1 in the spring of 93 w/o having won a slam over the previous 52 wks -- the first to do this since Lendl. People forget this b/c he went on to win Wimby and US Open that year. Even Sampras at the time felt guilty about surpassing Courier when he hadn't won a Slam in so long (at the time Courier had 4 vs. 1 in slams c/w Sampras)

3. E (Wilander)
Wilander won 2 on grass (83, 84 Aus Open), 3 on clay (82, 85, 88 French), and 2 on hardcourt (88 Aus Open, 88 US Open)
- People forget that Aus Open was on grass until 88; Laver never won a hardcourt slam

4. C (Hewitt)
- He did it in 2002

5. E (Rafter)
- Was only #1 for one week in his career

Let me know if you want me to do this again. Thanks!

Ah, didn't realize Wilander had 2 Aussie opens. And i didn't read number 2 carefully enough.
