"I arrive, I take some money and I go to the next tournament: I do my job," he said.

"If you win an ATP 250, you only pocket $30,000. Me, with bye (in the first round), I took 10,000 each time losing straight. Why tear yourself away like crazy to earn barely more?"

Paire's a total head case and exemplifies what's wrong with tennis today. It's all about the cash, not about winning titles, working your ass off or trying to become the greatest player you can become. Too many are just satisfied to hover around 50-100 in the rankings and rake in the cash without any results.

But wasn't it always for money apart from 80-90, there is reason why there was a pro tour to begin with.

Economics major. Maybe has some Six Stigma training, focus on efficiency. Smart.

I understand your point but one could argue that it's the ones who work their asses off are more the head cases in a practical sense. If Paire is making a good living and having a pleasant enough time doing it, so be it for him

I’m going with connors for the first quote and pairs for the second?
The OP asked which player said this, so both quotes must have attributed to Pairre.

Hm, is that why the 80s-90s had such great tennis? No video games? You might be onto something.

But that's a problem that corrects itself. You don't get entry into tournaments for free; if you keep losing then your ranking will eventually drop and you will have to go to Challengers, and so on.

Definitely Paire because Connors retired in mid 90 and ATP 250 didn't pay 10k for Round 16 exits.

Perhaps this quote will be easier to identify:

"I arrive. I collect millions from the Oil Sheikhs and hawk my ugly $500 shoes. I play two pitiful matches and then announce another hiatus. I do my job," he said.

Don't forget the sleek, James Bond racket. Although I guess he did an online interview for that

I don't think its fair to say "its whats wrong with tennis today" Paire obviously is a head case but him aside, not every player is going to win titles. I'm sure there are a handful of players out there who probably work harder than the top players and want to win titles over cash but get nowhere because they don't have that extra talent needed. I'm sure for them it's really hard to stay motivated in that situation and tennis IS a job at the end of the day, they need to make money so they naturally fall into the paycheck attitude. It's no different from a normal job in my opinion, how long can you work at your absolute best yet never get promoted or appreciated before you just sorta slip back into just doing the job?
