Hi Everyone,
I'm returning to the game from a long time off. I am 40 now and was a solid 4.5 when I was in high school and college. Coming back, I have realized that a lot of things have changed versus traditional "rules" for shots.
I have had an unusual problem that I have never had the serve I believe I should have. I am 6'2" and 205 with muscle and minimal body fat, so I figure getting back a good serve should be easier for me if I work hard at things.
As I have been working with the pro at my club he routinely discusses how my toss was too high. I have adjusted it downward, and things have somewhat improved. However, I was alway of the mindset back years ago that exploding up into the ball with your legs is important. In order to get leg movement upward, I seem to believe (incorrectly) that a higher toss is needed.
I watched the video of "serving up the mountain" and found it to be pretty useful.
For those still reading (thank you), what do you suggest is most important?
1)a lower toss with simpler body mechanics
2)more leg movement up and into the ball with a higher toss.
I used to be a hardcore serve volley guy years ago, so have to restrain my ball toss from being high and going into the court too much and falling in towards the net.
Do you all have any simple tips for me in order to get my toss ideal? My pro says it should not be much higher than my racquet when I am standing flat footed holding my racquet up.
Thank you all for your help. I just want a simple and effective serve, but occasionally have issues settling on where my toss should be.
