Tennis shoe life

USTA guideline says that a tennis shoe should be replaced for every 100 hrs or use. The foot doctor zach guy over at youtube was talking about sneaker life of about 500 hrs. However he did say that the cushioning/comfort of the tennis shoe goes away before outsole is worn out.

If you are not wearing out the outsole or the uppers because you dont slide as much or dont have as aggressive footwork( my guess is most recreational players fall in this category?), how many hours can you play with a good pair of tennis shoes ( 100$-150$ shoes) before it needs to be replaced as a healthy practice?

i have an excel spreadsheet of every time i play tennis. i estimate about 2 hours per match. i replace my insoles every 20 matches, so about 40 hours. i think that's pushing it a little because the cushion is mostly gone at about match 17-18. i'm going to start replacing insoles at 15 matches, so about 30 hours. I buy expensive shoes, $100-150. I think the cushion is gone at about 40 matches, so about 80 hours. I think it's a little sooner than that. I'm going to start replacing shoes at 30 matches, so about 60 hours.

If you push it past these points, you will slowly wear your feet out and get damage like i did when i was younger. I now have very worn out fat pads on the bottom of my feet. I also have plantar fasciitis. My heel has been hurting bad since May and I've been out of commission from tennis since then, except for an attempted comeback in June of 3 matches. When i was younger I just used the insole that came with the shoe and i didn't replace shoes for a year or sometimes longer. My parents are cheapos and dumbos.

This is an interesting answer and I’m keen to learn more about your approach. I think the OP will need historical data like you have to make a proper assessment, considering everyone has different kinetic load when exercising or doing physical activity, weight, tactics that influence degree of motion , etc)

The foot doctor said 500 miles not 500 hours. Just an FYI.
