Tennis should have one tournament with all 3 surfaces!

I think it would be a lot of fun to have a tournament where players are pitted against each other on different surfaces. So when the draws come out matches are randomly assigned to different surfaces and players have to be prepared to play on any surface. As you get to the quarters and semis, you could possibly even choose a format where the winner of the toss gets to choose the surface. And then have a playoff format for the finals where each player plays the other player on all 3 surfaces.

Of course, I think it would be very expensive to maintain courts of 3 different surface types. But if the tournament generated massive popularity it could turn out to be financially feasible.

Um noooooooooooo

Multiple surface exposure...destroys timing and can cause shin splits. Better to have the tournaments they have now!

The only top player that might prefer that would be davydenko!

Actually, quite a nice and radical idea, but probably wouldn't work for the usual 64 player draw type of tournament; might work for the season ending masters cup type of championship where the round robin format comes into play

It would result in low-quality tennis. Players would have trouble adjusting, and so we'd end up with lots more shanks, mishits, matches decided with unforced errors. It wouldn't be fun to watch, even if the logistics could be worked out.

Even better, have a tournament of 50/50's ... half grass, half clay courts. Remember the Federer vs Nadal exo ? That would really be interesting and really prove who the most skilled players are !

What's up with this "trouble adjusting" bull ****. They're pros, live with it.

And everything is relative. They've got another pro on the other side of the net who'll do his best to PREVENT his opponent from adjusting by mixing in junk.

Also, the standard for "adjusting" is higher - they've not only got to adjust so they're hitting the ball ok, they've got to adjust so they're hitting back 130mph serves. As said - they're adjusting to the pro on the other side, who's going to do his best to exploit the slightest maladjustment.

The best tennis comes when both players are hitting the ball well, when they're MAKING those great shots over and over. This would never end up being the case in this setup. The highlight reel would have lots of forced and unforced errors rather than winners.

I don't think this idea would work for an actual tournament, but I could definitely see it for a fun/exhibition thing. So maybe the draw won't be 64 players, but hey, even if it's just 16 or something, it would be great fun. And maybe you could have round robin etc. all added into the mix to make it more interesting. It's a great idea!

Mission Hills just had a "grand slam" coachella valley grand prix tournament last weekend with this exact format, players playing diff matches during the 3 day weekend on hard, dirt, and grass. Think they made it so the finals were on the grass.

They should make 1 court made out of clay, grass, and hardcourt. Yeah! I think it would be interesting tennis.

 players do specific work for each surface mainly to adjust their game and TO AVOID INJURY.....different surfaces in one tournament would produce less quality matches and would increase chances of injury....
