Tennis socks

Looking for some good tennis socks, white and long... I was wearing these crappy white umbro socks that I got really cheap at sports direct, they were alright at first but last time I played my toes got quite sore, think because after a few uses/washes the material is all harsh and grainy.

So, was looking at the adidas adicrew 3 pairs for £10, I wear adidas apparel so preferably adidas, anyone tried these? What socks are good?

I've tried some of Adidas sock about three years ago. The elasticity wore out pretty quickly. Don't know if they've improved the quality since then.

I mainly wear Euro-Socks. Very comfortable and durable. Another good brand of socks are Feetures.

I use running socks. Thorlos with lots of padding on the heel / toe. They are low cut or medium cut though. I don't think they have the tube style sock.

I was hesitant to try out Thorlos at £10 a pair. I won't use anything else now. For me, they're so much more comfortable that they're worth the price. They also last a lot longer than a £2 pair of socks.

why in tennis pros like Federer use 2 pairs of socks ???

I can only speak for myself.

I do it for one reason: Less friction on my skin.

This means I have a smaller chance of getting a blister.

It also means that I will have much less irritation on my bunion areas.

You might also get a little more cushion but that's mainly the function of the soles of your shoes.

it really took a whole ten posts for someone to bring up dri-fit?! Blasphemy! Part of me keeps buying nike shoes just so they'll match the accumulation of dri-fit socks that I've stockpiled.

+1 for the Nike Dri-Fit's. I can't remember the last time I wore anything other than these to play.

Okay they sound good, and at £5 a pair that's not bad, grab 3-4 pairs and you're set (I still don't play that often at the moment, building up til summer). Shame, cause I wear barricades!

Thorlo Level 2, gets my vote. Just found some at a local discount retailor for $6 a pair. I have not tried the Feetures or Eurosox that everyone raves about.

Yes definitely give 2x socks a try, it's much more snug and resists stretching from heat + sweat + wear a little more. Also less chance of blisters. But the caveat is only do it if your shoes allow you to. If it's too snug it'll be uncomfortable.

I am a footware/sock junkie, there is an OCD bug in me today due to some feet issues as a child. I literally rotate 3 pairs of shoes and search for socks...for tennis, I've found the following as providing enough cushion, without slipping:

1. Nike Dri-Fit Pro Compression Sock (Great Cushion, Weight, Moisture Management with incredible arch support, downside is cost and availability)

2. Nike Dri-Fit Elite Basketball (More Cushion without too much bulk.)

3. Nike Dri-Fit Cushioned (Good All around for the price)

4. Experia Merino Wool/Silk Running Socks (Lightweight, Thorlo Cushion, Great Moisture Removal, downside crazy expensive...about $17 a pair)

5. Thorlo Level II (Nice Balance of Cushion and Bulk. Good Arch Support

Thorlos! Great cushioning, non-irritating and last a long time.

I guess I'm the only one who wears cheap Target socks? I get a couple six packs every season and they seem to do me well. I wear two pairs of socks when I play to give me a more secure fit. Last thing I want is my socks/feet sliding around in my shoes. :-(

I also use cotton socks because they seem to stay put in my shoe. I pull them up pretty tight and wrap the tops of the socks over each other so there's less chance the socks will fall into my shoes.

if you wear crew socks your socks wont fall into your shoes

Thorlo's FTW!!!!

I trained in them, raced in them (Track) and now play tennis in them. That's a component of your gear that's not worth skimping on!!

Give the Thorlos a go - they fit the thick and durable criteria, and are a very high quality sock. They also come with a guarantee:

30 Day Money Back Guarantee
30 Day No Risk Trial. Thorlos feel better than your "ordinary socks" or your money back!
Proper shoe fit required.

Buy from somewhere that honours that, and you're risk-free.

Yeah might give the Thorlos a go, it is probably worth it, for walking/hiking I just wear basic medium thick synthetic socks (peter storm), for running (I only run trails) I wear Hilly Monoskin Trails which are fairly thick and fast drying, but the ones I was wearing for tennis were much lower uality, but since it's much harder on your feet on the hardcourts/outdoor courts and it's stop and start, I probably sohuld look into a much better quality sock.

I have tried many socks and I would really like to recommend Tommy Hilfiger Performance Technical Athletic socks! They are SO good. I buy them in local outlet (Prime Outlets of Orlando): 6 pairs for $15.
Btw, I hate synthetic socks. This is the best balance I was able to find.

I haven't found that to be the case.

Do you treat them like normal Dri-Fit, and not use softener, etc?

YEah, I just throw them in the wash and wash them. They seem like they retain the stench of sweat. I also need to mention these are not tennis specific socks. They're just the regular nike dri fit crews in black that are left and right specific you can buy at any sports chain. They slip around in my shoe alot and are really thin.

Are the thick cushion thorlos really that thick? I wear barricades in UK10 and I'm thinking of getting the thick cushion crew Thorlos - this won't make them too tight fitting? I'd like a thicker sock as the ones I was wearing before were pretty thin and cheap, and I'm probably going to drop my insoles and go back to the standard ones, because it raises up the heel a bit too much, and they add extra weight.

EDIT - ordered the three pack thick thorlos tennis crew, I figure it's worth it

there is very little actual difference between different kinds of athletic socks (and different brands)... got this information from a guy who works for thorlo.. Any sock works for me, even old-fashioned 100% cotton tennis socks, and I can't afford the real sport socks (nike dri-fit, for example, costs about $37 for a pair here. a completely ridiculous price btw). And you can always use two layers of socks like some pros do, it might give you more control and a snug feeling

Are you sure that the guy really worked for Thorlo, or was he a clothing distributor that just happened to sell Thorlos as one of his multiple brands?
Because the Thorlo sports socks were the original synthetic yarn brand that had multiple specific socks designed for specific sports, including tennis. I still think you can't beat the cushioning or wearability of the Thorlo 3's.

The trouble with cotton socks is that they absorb a lot of moisture, then the cotton compresses down and provides little shock absorbtion or friction protection. Two pair just means two pair of compressed, sopping wet cotton socks.

And socks wear most at areas of maximum friction; namely the heel and under the ball of the foot. The extra thickness and durable synthetic yarns made by Thorlo will last longer than any cotton socks, and longer than any other sports sock I have tried for tennis.

I have to admit I would never pay $37 for a pair of socks. How much are Thorlos by the way in Sweeden?

The Thorlos are thicker and probably equivalent to wearing two pairs of cotton socks but the extra cushion helps greatly.

I have tried the Nike Dri Fit socks but to me they don't seem to absorb moisture that well. I feel like my feet are really sweaty after wearing them for a few hours.

For those of you also thinking about the Thorlos, I would recommend them! I ordered 3 pairs of the maximum cushion and I've tried them on with my barricades and they're really comfortable and snug. I've not played yet (recovering from virus) but I can tell these will stop my foot moving around particularly in the forefoot and hopefully prevent soreness/blistering like before.

I did drop my insoles and put back in the original one and I think they feel a much more comfortable fit and ride, along side the thicker socks. However if you require an aftermarket orthotic/insole then I think with these thick socks the fit would be uncomfortable.

Thorlos are nice when new but they are slippery when wet. I've been trying Dry Max brand that TW sells and they are fantastic. It uses a dual material design, inner wicks away sweat and outer absorbs it. Vents in all the right places. I used to wear Thorlos, then two pairs of socks but Dry Max crew has my vote for keeping my feet drier.

I go with two pairs of the Nike Drifit socks. I have tried under armour, adidas, etc. in running, training socks and just keep going back to the drifit's. I tried Thorlo's on the suggestions of others and found them to be amoung the worst I have ever tried. They get really wet and heavy and your feet move around inside the socks a great deal. I could not tighten my shoes enough to keep my feet from ramming into the end of the shoes.
I would never reccomment the Thorlos to anyone including my worst enemy.
