Tennis: The forgotten sport

As I flip through the channels trying to find some live coverage of the IW final I spot every possible sport Golf, Soccer, College Ball, NBA yet tennis has one of its biggest tournaments of the year and there seems to be no coverage for the average viewer. If you look at the espn website they have high school sports listed before tennis. As exciting a sport as tennis is it seems to get no recognition and less air time than less exciting sports. I get the impression someone isn't doing there job and people have forgotten about tennis except for the slams.

What do you guys think?

Eurosport covers the men's and women's final. Other tournaments are routinely covered by some less known channels... Tennis is forgotten mostly in the USA, as it seems.

if nadal or federer were american, tennis would be followed by all sports channels in the us. but right now, americans are not challenging the top players, and because most americans dont care about international sports, tennis isnt going to be played on TV

Exactly, nothing more to it. Top 4 = a Spaniard, a Swiss, a Brit and a Serb. No need to say more, Americans in general are not gonna care.

I always thought the TV in the US would be the best possible, so it amazes me to see guys post on here that they can't get to see Masters events live!

In the UK, we get pretty good coverage from Sky and Eurosport.

Here's something I just posted that is relevant:

Anyone else baffled by the lack of Indian Wells TV coverage after the awesome TennisChannel first weekend? It is on Fox Sports Net but cut up and time shifted and/or not broadcast in various markets. The basketball thing makes for bad timing.

But you could actually watch the Indian Wells Final live on line in an hour or so, and it just occured to me some of you guys might want to know. I'm here sitting in the press box, but Tennisplayer has just done a partnership with TennisTV.com which is streaming 35 tournaments live a year.

Check out the story if you want to know more. Hopefully TennisChannel will be able to do the whole event in the future!!!!!!

Honestly Golf and Poker get better coverage than tennis. Can these really be even considered sports? Indian Wells is one of the best tournaments in the U.S half the general population doesn't even know it exist. Personally I would like to spend my Sunday afternoon watching tennis on TV after my mourning match play. I'm sure many others feel the same, enough to not have us staring into a computer monitor instead of sitting on the couch and watching it in HD as it should be watched:mad:

well, tennis just isn't on the radar in the us. that's all there is to it. it was easy to sell the game when there were americans winning left and right. but once you hang your hat on that strategy, and don't market, say . . . the international/global aspect of the game . . . then you have a period like this, when the average american fan can't be bothered.

Its forgotten quite a bit in the states now. But of course, Pete, Andre, Courier, Connors, Mac are not around to represent our country. Now we have to rely on...... Roddick:shock:

No wonder Its forgotten.

Serious tennis fans don't seem to realize how little interest there is in the sport. People I know who don't play the sport might watch some of the US Open but that's about it. I play during the indoor season with a group of about 25 people in round robin play and a different group of 25 or so during the summer. Virtually none of them watches tennis except during a slam. Given these realities, it's not too surprising that it's hard to find on TV.

Its funny but this passed year I went to the USO to watch the Nadal-Querry match, and I crap you not there seemed to be more foreigners (europeans mostly) there than americans. I certainly met more americans there when I went back in the late 90s during my high school years.

Interestingly enough I find people that when I tell them I play tennis tell me how much they enjoy it and seem to know alot of the players and mention they would watch it more often if it were on TV

I think your trolling.

Well good god... We americans dont ask for much in tennis. But we have been living with the likes of Roddick, Blake, Querry, Isner to represent us for a while now..

Cant we have at least one player who could be a legitimiate champ to get behind?

When Roddick is the best you have in the country, thats saying something. Nothing against Roddick. We need a legit, completely player to follow behind and bring us to glory.

Hell id rather have 39 year old Andre at this point to get behind than Roddick and take my chances with him

I didnt live much through the Glory years with Americans winning slams left and right, so I cant relate much.

Lets just hope we dont turn into a Great Britain.

The fact tennis has no presence on US TV tells a lot about the typical American TV consumer and very little about tennis itself. Namely, that the average US TV watcher can't broaden their mind enough to appreciate a good quality game if there isn't a player who happens to be a US citizen participating.

It is the equivalent issue as Olympic sports that American suck at --> no US TV coverage (or very little).

I bet if Donald Young would've lived up to the hype tennis would be significantly more popular

Well Sampras did mention you cant expect unrealistic expectations from the likes of Blake and Roddick etc. They just dont have what the likes of Mac, Pete, Andre, Courier, Connors etc had. You arent going to have a great crew of guys to represent your country every era.

I just wish we he had one is all. Is that too much to ask? LOL

It was very popular in the 80s, and we all know why. Now, I have to find a live match on internet... All I see on ESPN is college football and basketball these days...

You can blame it on the fact that Americans suck at tennis and Venus and Serena boycotted the event.....

I watched quite a lot of tennis on TV this week. It wasn't the best coverage, but there was coverage. Watched the semis and finals live. Half of the quarters live. Daily coverage for every other round. And I saw a few tennis shots make it into ESPN's ten best plays of the day this week. When they do the sports updates on the radio, I heard most of the IW ATP scores past the quarters.

It's a bad situation, but it's not like it's completely forgotten.
