Well, firstly you need to understand that any decent player in the league needs 30 seconds to realize that you hit harder and serve with more power, placement and accuracy. They have no other choice but to junkball you and give you no rhythm.

My experience with a lot of players is that they feed off pace. So trying to outhit them is futile for me. That is why my game is based on variety with heavy topspin, backhand slices and drop shots. It seems to throw more opponents off playing that style.

Depends on your goals of course. I play to improve / fun so I don't really care if I win or lose . . . as long as I play my game.

I had that experience with IM's at UCF. 3.5-4.0 moonball pushfest. I really wanted to win so I could get the top ranking and play only the best people. I ended up hating it and not enjoying playing at all. I would win and literally feel horrible.

^^^ I will employ any strategy to win. If it annoys and frustrates my opponents that is just a bonus.

WOW you are an epitome of anti-tennis than. Didn't know that.

That's garbage tennis... you might surprise few people when they see u play first but not after the first match.

I am not understanding than how are your matches epic unless of course we have 2 different ideas of what epic means. :)

As an example in my mind Djokovic vs Monfils US 2010 US Open DOES NOT equal Epic match. Curious what are your thoughts on that particular match?

Here are my thoughts on that match:

Most days I can play what you would consider "fun" tennis. If I'm off that day, I bring out the ugly stuff.

It is if you do it by any means necessary, this was suppose to be gentleman's game. Including lose like a gentleman not turn tennis in to Badminton if you cannot win otherwise.

Dont get me wrong sometimes it is necessary to play defensively lobs and pushing shots and all that included but not on EVERY shot deliberately.

When I hit neutral rally shot say down the middle and I see my opponent immediately switching to frying pan grip when he can hit it with any other I see BLACK I swear to god I think I can murder the poor guy at that point.

Maybe like coyfish said winning is not end all be all in my book. I am playing primarily for fun and adrenalin so if you put me to sleep out there where is the FUN in that?

Maybe because you cannot hit hard enough and angle it enough on clay. Yes, some players feed off pace IF they can get there on time. Pace works against Nadal hence it works against weekend warriors and league players.

I do agree with your notion about "figuring out the best way..." but for me that idea does have boundaries. Beating my opponents by using whatever is necessary is not my ultimate goal because I am not a pro. I play to win, don't get me wrong, but under my terms. My terms include pace, respect, integrity and exclude frustrating my opponents with my comments, body language and anti-tennis. I would rather lose like a man than win like a ***** :) Life is too short to moonball...

USTA forgot to include dignity respect and integrity rule where one's dignity is much more valuable that 15-Love ;)

IMO, crappy moonballs are as much of a legitimate strategy as blasting every shot. Some people would rather go for their shots and lose. Others would rather play ugly and win. It'd be nice if we could play the way we want and win too, but it's not easy to have the best of both worlds.

It is not either-or. There is so much stuff between those 2 extremes.

Interesting point of view Photoshop (equating moon ball to hard hit shot) but just to clarify there is a time and place for moon balls and pushing strategy. There is nothing wrong with that but not to the point that entire set or a match turns into what simply cannot be described as tennis anymore.

This is exactly what is wrong with Junior tennis for example. The pressure to win is so high that they place it high above learning so kids go out there an moon ball the whole match and have success while that simply cannot be translated to much above that level. They show up in the pro level and that simply does not work anymore.

Sampras touched upon this issue in his book. He approached his every junior match as an opportunity learn and to perfect his game not go out there and change it to moon ball fest just to win and learn nothing in the process.

Exactly. It's no fun when an opponent of mine hits every shot hard and it is either a winner or the ball goes into the net/out. I get no exercise that way and the points are short. That is what should be disallowed and considered low integrity/dignity. :)

The fun part of the game is that there are several ways to try and beat your opponent. It's the chess game aspect of the sport that I really enjoy.

On a serious note another question: Did you always play like that or were you forced to learn to play like that, thinking back to your junior days?

Pushers exist at all levels of the sport. I like to play pushers because it gives me plenty time to setup for my shots. After working them over for a few shots I sneak into net and end the point.

I was a moonballer for a while until I got into my junior year of high school and then I started hitting out more. It's a legitimate strategy. Look up some videos of Kent Carlsson, seriously!

Man booking the ball machine is so frustrating. The lady always acts like the place is packed and tells me I can only come at certain times yet every time I am there . . . empty.

Last time she said everything was booked and then acted like something miraculously popped up. Oh I can squeeze you in for an hour at 7. I get there and I played until they closed. There were 2/10 courts (including mine) that were occupied.

Let me guess this is the place in Azalea Park that is "coincidentally" run by the same folks that run etennis correct?

Why would you want to hit with a ball machine when you can hit with any one of us??? :?

Unless you can spit out 90 miles per hour balls at a rate of about every second for 3 hrs I think ball machines will still stay in business :)

I think everything one does in a cort is valid strategy. Moonball, cheap and charge, junk balls, slices, no metter what, if you have your opponent out of his confort zone you have good chances to win. However, like coyfish said, i play for fun and these types of strategy do not entertain me at all, so i dont use them. On the same token, if im playing with someone and he/she plays this type of game, I reserve myself the right to NOT play this game. I will either win or lose 6 x 0 because I'll blast every single ball that i see, and I don't care if that's tournament. I'll end the match in a heart beat. But, again, that is just me.

don't like playing moonballers either but being an adult now i'm not going to cry to the USTA and ask them to change the rules. you either learn how to play them or accept defeat. early on playing i was a ball basher as were my peers. playing tourneys i encountered many styles of play. that experience was beneficial. remember playing a tourney on the coast and one of my ball bashing buds had also entered. the 1st round i easily beat a junkball/moonballer. my ball basher friend asked how did i do it. he apparently had never beaten the jbmb. told him i out junked him by hitting no pace balls which the jbmb couldn't keep in the court. apparently the jbmb needed pace. ;) anybody else we know?

Yeah Tebow I remember we talked about this little while ago when I told you that I quit a match when I was up a set. Simply not enough time for these guys I'd rather be having a dinner at Mineros hahaha

Because its so close and the best practice. Im sick of driving down university lol. I also want to snap my strings before tomorrow. Anyone want to play best of 3 tonight at UCF ? (around 8pm). Nothing too crazy so we have energy for tomorrow.

Im up for playing later to avoid the sun but Tebow works in the evening so...

Reason I was asking if its Azalea is because folks who run it still act like tennis is an Elitist sport. Weather they are selling a racket or court time they really make it difficult. That was at least observation that myself and few others noticed. I wish they prove me wrong.

ball machines are great for what they do. dial them up to deep, high velocity, rapid frequency oscillating through the zones from corner to corner and you'll be grabbing for air in no time. also helps with tracking when returning Tebow's twist serve for a winner. :)

I get some hints of that but everyone there has always been nice to me in person. Maybe you are right but I can't imagine that attitude is what causes the courts to be "booked." Either that or they are too lazy to wheel the machine out there. Either way I find it hard to believe that they are booked from 3-close on this rainy day.

Goran it was great seeing you. The guy I was practicing with is a junk baller who feeds off pace, but he is actually really good and hits for the lines with insane accuracy. I love practicing with him because I lose weight running down droppers and I also get better at picking up dropshots instead of slapping them into the net. the type of guy you are talking about is no fun at all, and the funnest thing to do is slam one of their mooners into the corner so they play back behind the line. Then just dropshot them and lob the return. It is the best revenge because they will be running all over the place and be in pain.

And yeah, I am lucky with Azalea because they know me. I am a club member and I think when you become a member they just treat you better. They get to know you and then you are good to go. But I also think they are getting burnt on tennis and are starting to hate having to be there all the time, which is what you are seeing.
