JRK... good! that farker without lights almost crushed us!

i was a bit worried playing Isner on a foot lower net, but the good news is that i finally figured out how to block serves back. that alone should make Sup happy. (and the S&H ceiling!)
i thought my serve (ver.5d) was working pretty well until i threw my back out. not very fast but it goes in and sort of where i want it.

the marshmallow courts are crazy. i have a horrible drop shot but it worked pretty well there. and i totally whiffed on several forehands that just died on the squishy court and in the swirling winds. i'm just glad i didn't get heckled when i framed a serve out of the courts from 10 stories full of people on their balconies.

thanks again for playing. hopefully i can come out to the clinic tomorrow.. oof.

My final four. Are UNC, Lville, Memphis Pitt.

The PITT Pick is stretch though because they generally bomb in the tourney, and fileds aint 100% at that. UCLA and Villanova could easily kock duke out and make the final 4 though. Usually I see some upstes that Im pretty confident in but theres many this year IMO. I think the top 8 tems are head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

Any Way I got LVille over Memphis because the coaching will make a difference, Pitino is a tad better.

Then I got UNC over PITT. Psycho-T matches up well with Blair and as said before Filds aint 100% nor is Lawson but UNC is deeper and should not have a problem.

I really Like Louisville in championship, but something tells me they cant win 10 games in a row (4 games for big east and 6 to win the tourney).

President Obama thinks Carolina will winit all. And heck es doing such a great job manging the economy right now with you know quadrupling the deficit and increasing all this spending while somehow cutting taxes and siging stimulus bills that have providions allowing huge corporate payout of retention bonuses.

The man has done everything right to this point so UNCis a shoe in right? Right?

Holly wood says Louisville over UNC 67-59

WVU wouldnt surprise me if they made it to the Final Four. The team is that capable.

But they are also capable of losing focus and getting bounced by Dayton in the first round.

I have them losing to Knasas in the 2nd round though. That matchup doesnt favor them too well.

I actually have WVA making the Sweet 16 before losnig to Mich Tires... I mean Mich. St.

And I think once young Tyla Hangover gets out of the state of North Carolina, he won't get those 25 calls a game he's used to and will be shocked - shocked, I tell you - that there are other big guys out there who don't shake and quiver at his reputation. I'm talking Blake Griffin from down OU way, you know.

But that's just my opinion, which is worth about what my 401k is these days. And that's an economic joke, not a political one. :)

Im not sold on Psycho-T but the rest of the guys they got are good enough to overcome him sucking (which he does).

Im not sold on OU or Blake Griffin. That team almost lost to Davidson. Mizzou basically doubled blake all game and he played terrible (and the team as a result). OU has also dropped 4 of its last 6 games. They didnot play any tough games out of conference besides Davidson who was way over hyped. They beat who they are suposed to beat but not top flite competition.

OU loses to cuse in Rd2

Hey, Dats and HW. I missed one Thursday game - VCU-Illinois. How did you guys do?

My Tigers will have to play a lot better to beat the Terps. They had to get 35 points from a bench guy today...not good, not good at all. But they won. Should be a good game Saturday.

WOOT! Maryland won pretty handily. And as a reward they get . . . Memphis. *deflated woot*. Xisbum - i figure memphis will win this match up -- i think they'll be too much for maryland to handle . . . BUT even you must be sweating bullets because the terps have a nasty habit of playing up to the level of the competition. will be a good game.

thanks guys for letting me be the 5th wheel in your clinic yesterday. and thanks to liquid Magma for letting me borrow his sweet NON-CORTEX Aeropro Drives. spin is redonkulous, power in spades and surprisingly comfortable. i think i might have found my newest sticks but i don't wanna jinx it. i won't even mention any racquets until i'm 100% certain i likes it. we need another racquet demo freak like DVI needs another beer.

I missed a bunch of games but all the teams I missed I only had winning one game anyway.

I didnt have Wky winning against Ill. Had I know the starting PG for ILL had a broken hand that would have been my pick for the 5-12 instead of AZ over utah.

But Man did VCU make it a close game against UCLA.

Coaches log 3/20/09:

Last night's clinic went smoothly. A little push with drop balls drills and continued work on short ball excercises. Will they pay off dividends in a match. That's to be seen.

The players have improved. No doubt they put the effort into the clinic and gotten better throughout the 20 plus weeks. Breaking down what needs to be done is important.

JRS: My continued barking for him to "get down" on his backhand may be confusing him. At any moment, I thought he was going to either break dance or do some funky disco move. It still remains to be seen if he really can stay low enough for his one hander. He stays upright and lock his knees too much. He needs to remember, stay low and the swing will bring you up. His forehand has def improved in drills. When he pivots on the left foot and pulls his shoulder through he hits a wicked forehand. Unfortunately we haven't been able to translate that type of forehand into his game play. If he doesn't come out of his shell, and begin to hit corners, he may be in for a slow start this season.

Magma: The quiet buddhist monk started the clinic so timid with his strokes, that he his stroke response looked like an apology rather than the aggressive shots one would expect. So sorry for having to make you hit another ball back. Now he has pulled together a better game plan. More high rollers, corner shots and I do believe I noticed him in game play actually analyzing his opponents weaknesses. If he can continue to pull his shoulders through the shot and resist the urge to always step back for every groundstroke he can make a dent this season. Will he step forward, like he should in his step, or continue to fall back on his "play not to lose" approach. I think he is smart enough to make the transition.

DVI: The man is a tornado. Best way to describe his drill sessions and match play. We start off with a quiet peaceful start, the skies get dark, lots of wind generated from his strokes, some property destruction.... then an eerie calm. A pity, for when he calms down and pops his strokes deep and plays a smart game, he wins almost every time. Its a thing of beauty. Would love to see him also "get down", and not in a trovolta kind of way. He tends to stand upright a bit, but it may be due to his footwork hitch of landing his front foot parrellel to the net. If he can remember the three things that make his game work 1) hitting out in front, 2) getting low and keeping his front foot angled into the court, and 3) staying calm ... he can bump up a level by summer. Will he be able to calm the "hulk". I say "don't get him angry.. you don't want to see him angry".

TheJRK: When he he plays his "old man" game, even I can't yell at him to improve. Rather I want to make sure he hasn't soiled himself and the court to boot. Since he started to pull his shoulders and step into the court, it looks like his topspin game has returned. It seems to have helped his tennis elbow to a degree. Wonders what proper technique can do to your tennis ailments. With his reach and elastic abilities the game plan should be to: Hit deep, wait for the short ball and come into net. One fault is that his volleys haven't improved enough to be totally confident at net. His clinic absence may keep him where his second serve is getting him .. unable to get over the proverbial net.

TFM: I enjoy listening to how the ball reacts to which ever racquet he mooches that day. Its a sweet sound. I don't enjoy ducking off his errant shot and crying out to courts next door to be cautious of incoming balls. If he can manage to resist the urge to "slap" tha ball every time, but rather lock his wrist and hit through the shot he would be a force. Game play brings out what really happens in matches. A lot of "asian" witchcraft. Slice, dink, pops and whistles. The bipolar game situation was highlighted by his first serve flat shot ability. Overall, like the plastic man. More drills and clinic will help him get the most out of his game.

Overall: The group is easy to instruct. I constantly get compliments from the other pros how I have ringers on the court. Some of the noob pros can't believe the guys fall into the 3.5 level. Calling it absurd that they aren't playing 4.5s. I respond that Shcmad hits flat and that soon enough these guys will be bringing home some trophies.

asian witchcraft? muahahahaha. that's evil dood. it doesn't sound particularly great though. i was always of the mind that i'm a lazy counterpuncher and junk baller. which isn't terribly effective. lots of slices and dinks and some short angles with the idea that i want 95% of my opponents up at net where they typically suck a golf ball through a rubber hose. and then lob or hit a passing shot or make them hit said volleys. i would rather transition to the pounce on short balls and approach and end points at net paradigm.

i gotta lot of work ahead of me and i guess mooching racquets isn't the best path to consistency. BUT!! i just bought new racquets again. should arrive next week. AND i may force myself to play with them for longer than a week. give them the full rogering.

i wasn't aware that JRK was with us last night. did you hit with him earlier? later? or just a status update on how we're doing.

also what would your critique of our clinic mate -- D -- the guy with the big strokes and ubiquitous aeropro drive cortex?

Yeah, I thought that VCU kid had that last shot nailed, but YouSeeLA's guard didn't bite on the head fakes and stayed with him all the way. Gotta hand it to him - pretty slick defense.

I got lucky with the Big 10 picks - Michigan and Purdue wins, Illinois loss. Need similar luck to day - Ohio St and Mich St to win, Wisc to lose. I have Mich St all the way to the Elite 8, in fact. I really like Izzo's coaching style.

I'm also heavily invested in the Big 12 (3 to the Sweet 16) although I like West Va to get by Kansas and make the 16.

But I'm mighty worried about my Tigers; gotta score to win, and they won't get 35 from a bench guy every night. I have them in the Fab Four, but they could easily lose to the Turtles or, if they win that one, to Mizzou.

Ain't this fun? :)

And to all you Sup Clinic grads - great work. Wish I could be with you. Wise Sup is in the ways of winning tennis, so listen to him you should.

Oh that reminds me. ProPrestigelover came out to hit for half an hour yesterday. We had a mini lesson and boy did he pick up his game quickly. With some good lessons he could be wicked fast and dangerous for the chipmunk he is.

Great work PPL.

D the man is such a calm guy. He played D3 ball, and he has a lot of upper body strength. One thing he does simliar to JRS, is that he doesn't get "down low". It effects his play when you guys get him low, especially on the backhand. His volleys need a lot of work. His serve is going to kill him. No literally. He keeps throwing it at 1pm, he'll aggravate "poppy's" condition [end seinfeld reference]. Otherwise, his inconsistency is due in part to his lack of playing. He is coming back from years off. I expect he will just get better, but for now he is def in the mix with you guys.

p.s. Asian "witchcraft". LOL. I thought that was clever. I can almost hear Sinatra singing it.

So yesterday, I got my quote for getting what was suppose to be a deal from Babolat a pro. Screw that. It was like 30 bucks off retail! I was Vitaly angry. I think the pro who has connection was taking some off the top. I do feel bad, cause I heard he has money problems.. but still. I'm retired. Strict budget until the economy bounces back. Then it's caviar and velvet tennis bags. LOL.

Anyways, so the babolat is making a funny noise. I think its about to break.

So thanks to Topaz, she let me borrow her Ktour racquet. I went out and hit against some of the guys at the club. Nice racquet, but it needs lead and regardless, I couldn't get a great feel for the serve.

Bottom line. I'm about to go into the club and finally give in to the tennis director's wishes. No.. it doesn't involve one dollar bills and lotion (that's Sappy's friday nights). It's to use the club generousity and buy me some free sticks. I think I'm going to get a Prince.

I was watching a bit of the AMerican vs nova game with my mom. I told her I felt kinda sorry for American that they were gonna hang tough for 35minutes and run out of steam at the end. And that exactly what happened.

Feel good about memphis, MD cant hang with them. And they actually match up extremely well with Mizzou. Mizzou plays at a very past pace and that will work right into Memphis Strenghts. UConn will be though matchup, but I hate UCONN so Memphis wins.

Ohhh Ohhh Me me what about me?

Not free sticks, but the whole game critique thingy

Captains log 3/20/09 addition:

HW: Lights camera action. Momentum, momentum, momentum. To see HW in motion, is to study phsyics. Every ounce of his being moves in unison, and it really has too. For a guy that big to move that well, is remarkable. Not scary in the sense that his game is out of this world, but more the thought that if he dropped 30lbs he would give a lot of people trouble. So for now, he is my first choice for pick up basketball. Box out! Box out! poww.. someone is hitting the black pavement. As for his tennis, his serve is pretty good, but he could move it around the box more. Placement will beat out power more times than not. His volleys are his downfall. I thought it would be his JRS inability to stay low to the ground for ground strokes (please notice the word "ground"), or his constant incorrect sideways step for his backhand prep. Nope its the volley. Gamplay is very insteresting to witness. I think HW picked up something from his time in the military. One word for his gameplay " shock and awe". It's do or die. If he got his cardio up and worked the point a little more. Corners, rollovers, and pumped up his volley, then he's my first pick for my partner in 21.

Whats sad si that my volleys are terrible, but they used to be worst.

My plan is to drop 50lbs in the next 6 months. That would take care of cardio issuus and most of the other stuff that ails me except volleys.

I used to have more variety and accuracy on my serves but that was because in SD i would hit two carts full of serves a day

Captains log 3/20/09 Flatline:

Shcmad: I remember a Safin interview I read once where the big russian was asked who he idolized growing up. His response was classic. "I am not like an american kid... I had posters of myself on my wall" (I think that's how it went). For Shcmad, his tennis idol is hampering his potential. A heavy racquet, a twist follow through on his backhand, his parrellel swip on his forehand and lastly his brick throwing serve with a donkey kick motion. The kid has so much potential. Potential seems like that is an appropriate word. For with all the negative said above, he still went up a level this season. Just imagine if he got serious about Shcmad and less serious about Gulbis/Safin. Be his own idol or at the very least not listen to PP when it comes to racquet customization. A good pro can play with most racquets at a high level. A good player can play well with any racquet to a certain expectation. An up and coming player will deliver good results with a racquet that doesn't hold him/her back. Shcmad needs to find that happy medium and work on his technique. A high to low motion, a throwing fluid serve motion and finally the keywords for Shcmad: hit with a better margin of safety. Gameplay points it out. 2 ball minimum and its over. If he hasn't hurt himself yet playing with that club, then some good hitting sessions with a consistent player, a lot of work with his playing style and Shcmad could pin up a poster of himself on his wall. Kadishack may get jealous.

Granted, my expectations for serve are pretty high up. I was hitting against M and A at the club. They insisted I go for aces. Not one with the Ktour. Picked up the Babolat and hit maybe 7 out of 10 for aces. PPL was there to witness.

I have plenty of portraits of myself in my room at home. But one thing I don't get is: I thought El Jefe wanted me to follow the path of the talented Latvian redhead. That's what I've been doing: Hitting forehands beyond my power threshold even though it goes in only half the time.

P.S. Pureprestige and I thought about venturing to No. VA to participate in the Skyline doubles tourney today. However, we did not have the courage to ask any female players to play doubles with us.....

Back when I was in 9th grade I dominated on the BBall court. Of course I was 5'10"-11" and only about 175-185. I was a rodman type Iwas agile enough to guard anyone on the floor. Hustled on D and got after loose balls. I scored alot of easy buckets off putback because I boxed out. Like rodman people would get frustrated that I was schooling them. Especially because in Havre de Grade Aberdeen, Edgewood, and Joppatowne. i was the only white dude on any of those teams.

I know to stay out of the paint!!! (that's what you meant, right?) I had a BBall lesson yesterday. Found that I"m pretty good if I can shoot approx. 3 feet from basket. Anything further away was pretty iffy. I'm hoping I don't get fouled. I did practice with a 4th grader guarding me, but he is shorter than me.

For those wondering why in the world Topaz is playing BBall when she could be playing tennis...long story short...charity BBall where our school plays another...we've never won...I was ordered to play this year by The Boss (I've ducked it every year prior)...had I know about tourney sooner could have wiggled out, but too late know as others have wiggled out before me.

As far as the kTour on serve, I figure when the time comes, I'll lead it up, but I'm not there yet.

Also, sorry to miss you guys last night, but I was asked to give up my clinic spot...again, long story. Thought about trying to meet up with y'all at Dogfish, but once I got in and worked out and showered...I was pretty much done and 'in' for the night.

hey sup, thanks for letting me hang out with you yesterday. you're awesome. that was one tough half hour, i was sweating like crazy. those drills and tips were awesome. everything felt so much easier. my volleys and backhand were 100% better. when lent is over, we're going out to dogfish. i'll buy.

btw, did you know who that woman that was sitting to the left of me with the laptop was? her computer was a mess. her laptop was giving her problems, it would just hang for like 10 mins and then go to a blue screen. tfm was trying to fix it but it was hopeless. i wanted to stay and help her out more but i was already late.
