I probably will take some heat for this...but this new pure strike 16x19 is Babolat's best offer to date..
It has it all...power, spin, control etc...easy to use as well...

Here's my review. I'll come back and edit once I've played more.

* * *

Racquet Received: 18x20

String and tension used for test: I used gut in the mains at 52; Ultimate in the crosses at 50.

Tennis experience/background: 3.5 player, exclusively doubles. Been playing for about 14 years.

Describe your playing style (i.e. serve & volley): Doubles. I tend to chip and charge; I don't like to hit a lot of groundstrokes because it is not a strength. I S&V when necessary, come to net a lot. I am not a powerful player, so it is important to me to be able to hit with spin (slice, drop shots, topspin lobs, slice serves).

Current racquet/string setups: Current racket is a Pure Drive, about 8 years old. Hybrid of gut and ProLine II, 52/50

How many hours did you play with the racquet? Four hours today.

Comments on racquet performance: I am surprised to say that I really liked this racket. It feels too heavy for me, but it is only a smidge heavier than my Pure Drive, so that must be mostly in my head. I am seriously considering purchasing a second one.

-Groundstrokes: This is where I noticed the most difference in this racket compared to the PD. I achieved really good depth when I wasn't expecting it, and based on the reactions of my opponents it must have been a heavier ball. I did not notice a significant improvement in spin, but I got enough spin.

-Serves: I served very poorly with this racket. So many serves into the net, so many serves long. I am hesitant to blame the racket, at this point anyway. It got a bit better as I used it more, but it felt like my timing was off. I have a feeling this was operator error and nothing to do with the frame.

-Volleys: Of all of the strokes, this one was where I have the most concern about the racket. I seemed to miss volleys long in situations where I would normally make the volley. Maybe this racket is just a bit more powerful? I compensated by, well, doing the things you do to make sure your volleys don't go long: Take it more in front, move through it, watch it more carefully. I'm not sure I will get used to this change, though. It might take some adjustments in string or tension.

-Serve returns: I returned beautifully and effortlessly with this racket, against a variety of servers. I was frequently surprised that an ordinary return had such penetrating results. I felt so good with my returns (often not a strength) that I would be willing to ignore the volley issue to get this heavier service return (defined as deeper and more penetrating).

There is one overall thing I noticed about the racket that made me a bit unhappy. It just didn't have a good feel, even on balls that were struck well. I never got that satisfying feeling where you nail the ball just right. I am used to playing with a 100 inch frame, and this one is 98. Is the sweet spot really small or something? Even if it were a bit smaller, one would think I would nail the sweet spot once in a while.

Finally, I am experiencing some mild tennis elbow for the last few weeks. Nothing huge -- it goes away the next day. But I was more aware of it using this racket than using my PDs. I'll keep an eye on that too. I don't tend to get tennis elbow, but I have been playing a lot lately . . .

EDIT

Played 2 more hours yesterday. I fixed my serve problems (poor tossing, can you believe it?). Volleys were better, but still sent a couple long. Returns continue to be great, groundstrokes also good. I'm still getting spin, which is nice. I still feel like the racket feels a little big and clunky as I hold it, but I cant argue with the results.

Then I switched to my old racket and couldn't find my timing at all. Come on, a 7 year old PD cannot possibly feel that different, can it? Maybe -- my PD is 16x19. Would that account for the difference?

I will almost certainly buy another strike.

Edit:

Played another 2-hour doubles match today. I'm still struggling with balls flying on me on groundstrokes, and I'm still feeling my elbow a little.

I'm not sure what to do about balls going long. It was particularly noticeable with a slight wind behind me. I'm already stringing pretty tight, so what would be a good thing to try?

I'm already going to take FT.s' advice to add a bit of weight to the handle for the elbow.

I really want to figure this out.

EDIT:

I played a 90 minute warm-up today before my 2-hour doubles match, and, um . . . I went back to my old frames for the match.

During the warm-up with the Strike, I started having the same problem with volleys and groundstrokes going long. And my serve timing is still jacked up. I simply have not been able to figure it out. I put the Strike away and played with my old PDs for the last 45 minutes of my warm-up. I served much better, and I didn't feel like balls sailed on me.

I'm kind of bummed because I really want to like this racket. I'm going to weight the handle and give it another chance. But if I'm honest with myself and this were just a demo, I would return it to the store and try something else. I've played with the Strike a lot and, well, I don't think I ought to have to mess with a racket quite this much to find something that works.

My initial review after hitting today for around an hour. (will follow up later this weekend after my match)

Racquet Received: Babolat Pure Strike Tour (16x19)
String and tension used for test: Volkl Cyclone 18g, 52/52
Tennis experience/background: 3.5 rated, mostly self taught but take group lessons. Started playing tournaments and matches this year.
Describe your playing style (i.e. serve & volley): All-court. I will play baseline but change pace by coming to net. On serve I will be more aggressive as I have a big first serve relative to my overall rating.
Current racquet/string setups: Blade v7 16x19 (Tour Bite 50/50), TC95 v3 70RA (Gut/YPTP 58/54), Pure Strike Project One.7 16x19 (BHB7 50/50).
How many hours did you play with the racquet? So far, 1 hour with serving + wall hitting. I will update after my match Saturday morning.

Comments on racquet performance: My main comparison is between this and the Blade due to that being a very common question/comparison and also my current dilemma for which racquet to make my main racquet.
-Groundstrokes:
Groundstrokes feel very solid as expected. I would say the racquet feels very much between the Pure Strike One.7 and the Blade v7. It has the heft and increased head heaviness (but not nearly the heavy feel of the Blade) but a more "stiff" feel compared to the blade and easier time generating RHS. I actually really enjoyed the fact that I still had 70% of the plow of the Blade but felt like I had more maneuverability and whether it's poor technique or not, an easier time not being late on my strokes. This racquet is much more forgiving. You definitely don't have a "muted" feel. I know I strung with Cyclone but compared to the Blade with Tour Bite, it definitely had more of that classic Babolat 'stiff' feel, which I happen to like, without arm pain afterwards whereas the Blade definitely had a more dampened feel.

Forehands had moderate to low power, less than the Blade, but much easier to "swing out" on compared to the Blade. The Pure Strike allows you to really take cuts at the ball but is hefty enough with the Tour version to not get pushed around. Again, this goes back to being somewhat of a middle ground between the PO7 and the Blade v7.

Backhands were solid if you like to slice and dice a lot. I play a OHBH and I can definitely see using this racquet if I relied heavily on slice, topspin shots, etc. It's harder to drive the ball / hit flat due to less head heavy feel compared to the Blade, but definitely easier to prep the stroke and be on time to the ball.

Off-center hits did not feel good on this racquet (when do they ever), but the Blade spoiled me in that regard.

-Serves:
I typically hit a hard flat first serve and have a slice and kick serve for second serves. My flat serve suffered a bit compared to the Blade, but the Blade I also found was ridiculous awesome for my first serve so it's a high bar to meet. The second serves is where this racquet shined. I felt like the extra maneuverability allowed me to "carve" around the ball more easily on my slice serves and kicker. It's a bit of a toss up to be honest.

-Volleys:
(will comment once I play this weekend, but so far, against the wall, way more maneuverable at the net IMO)
-Serve returns:
(will comment once I play this weekend, Blade will be a high bar to meet since I felt like I could absorb and redirect literally any serve with it).

General reaction/comments on overall performance:
So far, this racquet is a close second to the Blade v7, maybe first. It's really a personal preference on if you like *slightly* more of that Babolat feel and a bit more head light compared to the Blade v7 which has a very unique feel that is flexy and a bit more like playing with a "hammer". I think regardless of what I choose, I'm hanging onto this racquet as it really checks all the boxes with its strong points being a solid combination of heft + maneuverability + access to RHS and its weaker points being a little stiffer feeling and less of a "cannon" on the serve.
Update: played a singles match today

Groundstrokes: forehands were much less powerful/heavy and but more topspin and higher launch angle than the Blade. The best part about this racquet actually was I felt I had a much better feel and control over ball placement. Inside-out forehands were rocking.

Backhand left some to be desired. Slice was really nice but similar to the forehand, the depth and ease of power left something to be desired.

Volleys were actually really solid. Nothing pushed this racquet around and I felt again like I could place my shots wherever I wanted.

Serve returns were on par with the Blade. Both hefty racquets and didn't get pushed around. I may have like this slightly better on returns but this particular server was a weaker server compared to who I played with the Blade against.

Long story short, I give this a slight edge in control and spin over the Blade but the Blade has better feel, access to Power, and plow through.

A simple reason for lack of control on volleys would be your string setup which you said by mistake put gut in the mains when your normal setup is the crosses. This will certainly give you a more responsive feel. On serve, the SW difference between the two racquets would need adjusting. Just go do serve practice and purely work on smoothing out your swing and you’ll be serving great with this stick.

S7T @48lbs is working nicely in my 12oz weighed up 16M. This string is not as crisp as TB or even AluP. It’s not springy per se either like someone mentioned. It doesn’t have what I would perceive as a soft feel but it is somehow pretty comfortable. The response at least in this frame is not of deep pocketing but a bit of pocketing with pretty good grab on the ball. I can still easily adjust to flatter hitting and it has both power for a poly and control. AluP has a more connected feel comparatively but I think in its first 2-3hrs there is nothing out there that feels as good as AluP, it just looses that responsiveness very quickly. S7T does have more comfort and certainly the better spin potential so let’s see how durability goes with S7T. Hopefully I can setup a practice match with someone this afternoon when it dries up from all the rain

Last weekend I hit with the new Pure Strike 98 16x19 and absolutely loved it. It had more power and control than my current racket of choice "the 2015 ProStaff 97" and it felt great on the arm. I was just hitting around for about an hour. No match play. I was very happy with the way it performed on ground strokes and serves. Not so much on volleys though. I would need to do some tinkering with lead tape in the hoop for added stability.

So today I played a Semi Final match in a tournament in my area. I played a guy that I had beaten about 10 times before within usta league play and other tournaments. So being extremely confident I decided to play the match with my new Pure Strike 98 16x19 instead of my bread and butter 2015 ProStaff 97 that I've been playing with for the past 4 years. I lost the first three games and was down 0-3. I couldn't believe what was happening. I was getting so frustrated with this new frame. Nothing was working well today at all. I switched back to my ProStaff97 and won the next 6 games in a row winning the set 6-3. Then finishing the match winning the second 6-2. I'm not sure what the hell was going on today but I couldn't play a match with this new Pure Strike 98 to save my life. It seemed like with all of my normal strokes 90% of the balls were going long. And I mean way long. I was actually holding back to keep balls in the court on both sides. So needless to say I wasn't able to hit winners as I normally do. Heck... even my serves were going long. So I don't know If I need to string this Pure Strike up a few pounds tighter or switch to a deader stiffer poly. But for right now I'll be sticking to my 2015 ProStaff 97 for the rest of this season. I'll hold onto the Pure Strike and mess around with string and tension to see if I can find a winning combination for next season. But I can tell you that using Alu Power in this frame strung at 46 lbs. does not work at all. Way to powerful. I'm thinking of trying Hyper G next strung at like 48 and seeing how that works. If that doesn't work I'll probably be selling the racket and trying out the new Blade V7 next.
It just may not be the racquet for you. It sounds like you are probably getting better spin with your pro staff, keeping the ball in the court. The string pattern on the Pure Strike is pretty tight, lending itself to more court penetration vs spin.

I had the same experience (although I venture that you're a better hitter than I), I hit a session with a friend's 16x19 and the power, for me, was seductive, but it took too much effort to try to keep the ball in, my normal flat-ish strokes were landing long whenever I was not concentrating and brushing up with intention. The Blade 16x19 V7 just works for me without issue, more feel, less power, way more control, much easier for me to use. Precision and confidence over "big gun" power. And easier on my arm as well, I felt the PS after just a couple hours of hitting. My matched pair of blades arrives tomorrow, finally going to retire the search (for a while at least!).

I was actually getting more spin with the Pure Strike. Even my opponent noticed a big difference in spin saying that my balls were jumping off the court much more when I was using the Pure Strike. To me it seemed like the ball was trampolineing off of the stringbed with a much higher launch angle than with the ProStaff 97. I think the bottom line is that the Pure Strike has a ton of power and a high launch angle. So it needs to be tamed with a low powered poly if you hit hard like I do. Like you said... it just may not be the racket for me.

I would really like to try the V7. I have a feeling that it may be what I'm looking for. But theres never a demo available from TW. And there strung with multi anyway. That wouldn't work for me. If I decide to unload this Pure Strike, I'll take a chance and grab a V7.

The S7T in my Pure Strike notched through and broke after about only six hours of use, about three of which was continuous against a ball machine at high swing speed and the other three hours of general hitting and playing by myself and others. I restrung with S7T at 48 pounds and it is harsh at the stock weight with this much tension. Some of the frame and stringbed vibration I mentioned earlier seem amplified, and mis-hits near the tip are pretty jarring.

Will play with it in this configuration for a bit more, then extend it and start adding weight to get it closer to my preferred specs.

This is strange to me since I've had the exact opposite experience regarding power. I actually just swapped my Blade 16x19 for a 18x20 and the 18x20 is actually much more head light than the 16x19 that I had. Me thinks my original 16x19 must have been out of spec or something.

Hit with the standard 16x19 yesterday. It was very different from the 18x20 blade v7 I have been grooving with lately. Significantly more power, higher launch angle, and stiffer feel, though the sweet spot felt nice and plush. I will post a detailed review once I’ve logged a few more hours with this frame. I can definitely see it’s appeal to younger/older/weaker players who want a performance boost. I actually thought the string spacing was fairly open for a 16x19, especially around the perimeter of the frame.

Being in Norcal I got my Pure Strike 16x19 within 1 day of shipping (I know lucky) had it to the stringers and back in my hands within a day or so. I strung is as a hybrid to mimic my current strings on my Pure Aeros at 51/53lbs. On the tighter side but wanted to start with some confidence building control before dropping it for a bit more pop.

I have hit with it a couple of times for a total of around 6-8 hours and after some initial adjusting I'm really liking this frame. I want to give it some more through testing with some ball machine work/drills to really test it out before a full review.

I got a standard 16x19 for the playtest and have it strung up with RPM Rough full bed at 49 and 47lb. So far it is a nice stick on volleys and has good stability. However I would like to see it more headlight as it feels very sluggish through the hitting zone on groundstrokes and especially on serves. I would also echo what others have said about it feeling too high powered and having a pretty high launch angle. So far I'm not really liking this after 3 2 hour sessions but am going to keep at it a bit more and then post my full review. I'm currently using a Prestige pro stock TGK 238.2 as my regular frame.

Second try with the 18M after my elbow had started feeling sensitive the first time around, and this time it was worse. I played against the wall just hitting some soft shots and within 10 mins I started get some sharp pain, so I stopped.

Generally, outter elbow pain means the racquet balance is not quite compatible with my arm. So, I decided to do a small experiment: Tailweighted 11 gm under the butt cap and brought down the balance from 33.2 cm to 32.1 cm, total weight at 337 gm now.

Went out to a league match to try it out. A little hesitent at first, all felt good though, started to hit bigger and bigger shots as the match went along. Result: No pain at all, and won the match :)

This is one sweeeeet frame!!!

I might be having a similar issue with the PST, I've never had any shoulder problems before but I'm feeling some very slight soreness after using the racket about 3 times within the past 6 days or so. Going to give it a go again tonight, hopefully it isn't bad because otherwise I'm loving the racket.

Hi,

Anybody here could compare the Blade V7 16x19 and/or 18x20 vs. The new pure strike 18x20?

Thank you

IME, shoulder soreness results, most of the time, due string bed or frame stiffness. I would not classify the PST as a stiff frame necessarily and its vibration frequency is relatively low. So, may be lower tensions or string change might help. Which strings/tensions do you use?

Yeah, my bad there, and that's a good question you're asking. The extra springiness and power of the 16X19 would probably be tamed along with that extra vibration in the Pure Strike 18X20 and be a closer comparison to the v7 Blade.

Launch angle: The Pure Strike has a higher launch angle. Probably due to the slightly more open string pattern, possibly complicated by the head coming through more quickly because it is lighter. It's not significantly higher, but it is noticeably higher.

So ... I recently got Babolat Pure Strike 100 3rd gen 16x19, and strung it with a 16 gauge poly at 54 pounds. I feel the serves are better, but I'm finding it hard to adjust to the launch angle. I am shooting so many balls long that it is not funny.

Since it is just a couple of weeks old setup, I am not up for getting the racket re-strung soon, unless that is my only remedy here. I'm going to add a lot of string savers to up the tension on strings, and see if that helps.

If both of these fail, I'm afraid I will have to eat the cost and return this racket. It will be a sad day, the thing works really well for me other than this launch angle issue.

My question is - what can I do with my technique to counter the launch angle? Just play with racket more closed? Even on flat/driving returns?

Guessing that you maybe using the continental grip, changing to semi-western or western grip should fix that I think.

Thanks. I went all the way to semi-western but launch angle still wasn't predictable. I think I need to spend time with a ball machine to figure out what would help with a driving baseline shot. So far I have used this racket more in a league match setting, and it is harder to learn this stuff under pressure.

My feelings, since I recently was on an eight month long question to find my preferred launch angle with a new racquet, is that it pretty much is what it is, and that it is **hard** to adjust a game that you have had for a long time to accommodate anything more than a moderate change in launch angle. If you're still changing your technique or moving up in skill level, then it may be worth it to put the work in to changing. But otherwise, if you have to think about it when you're under pressure during a match, the results will more often than not, be bad.

All that being said, the easiest way to moderately change launch angle is to use different strings. Are you using a shaped poly now?

I would experiment with a slightly heavier grip to add a little more weight toward the bottom. The 100 feels like it has most of its weight in the head, and adding a little weight in the handle might help with your swing path slightly (for the better).

Hi,

Who tried the 18x20 pure strike ? What are your feedbacks? Is it that low powered ? I mean this is still a PS...

And how does it compare to Gen 2?
Yes exactly, because I loved the 2nd gen 18x20 but the sweet spot was too small. That was the only problem... What about the sweetspot of that one ? Thank you

IME, shoulder soreness results, most of the time, due string bed or frame stiffness. I would not classify the PST as a stiff frame necessarily and its vibration frequency is relatively low. So, may be lower tensions or string change might help. Which strings/tensions do you use?

Hyper-G at 53lbs, which is a string setup I like but not a setup I use that often. Probably will give something else a try next

Anyone can compare PS 16x18 with yonex dr98? Am thinking if PS would be better suited for my SHBH. Also, is the string bed consistent (unlike 2016 Wilson PS97)

Have any of the play testers strung up their PS18x20 with an Origin RPM Blast Rough hybrid? I’ve had work and other pressing matters keeping me from the courts since receiving the play test racquet. Getting it strung today. I need to soften it up as I have had elbow trouble in the past and don’t want it back. There is a little voice telling me to avoid the free string altogether. Maybe a VS Touch/smooth, round, soft poly???? Ideas?

Gut in mains feels amazing in this racket. And it lasts longer than my all poly setup in my Pure Aero. At a minimum, I highly recommend a hybrid...just not feeling this with all poly.

I use VS Team (1.25mm/17ga) in the mains @52# and Lux Alu Power Soft (1.25mm/16L) in the crosses @48# in my Gen 2 18x20s and it feels very plush to me, as well as having great touch/feel and spin.

Amazingly, having never used a Pure Strike previously, I think those are the best reference tensions for the 3rd gen as well, although I prefer VS Touch/RPM Blast Rough combination.

My stock PS strung with revolution plays really well. So easy to play at such a light weight and interestingly didn’t feel like i was getting pushed around. Interestingly revolution also felt kinda lively and it was very temping to hit drives if the ball was coming in high enough and it works well. Move over to my other frame at 12oz strung with S7T and it feels a bit muted comparatively but that extra weight sure adds weight to the ball and kicks up the serves a notch. Nice frame, nice precision all works well for me so far.

Yep, that sounds like just about the perfect setup. Would probably work on the Strikes 16x19, Tour, Team, and 100 too.

Are you thinking full bed ng?

note yet, still want to experiment :
-never loved full bed, never felt great with
-for me, cheaper to hybrid and I have a vast and random collection of poly as it's all I've used past 15 years

current favorite:
VS 1.30 mains @50 and RPM cross 1.25 @47

next up:
VS 1.25 mains @50 and RPM 1.20 cross @47

once I figure out which feels the best (as a baseline), I'll start trying other poly brands, gauges, tensions.

if I keep the VS 1.30 and RPM 1.25 (I have a couple packs of the VS/RPM), I will bring the tension down 1-2 lbs...always feels better after 1 hard hitting session

yes... I am a string addict

FWIW, it might not last long in a 16x19, I only got about 4 hrs out of it in a Pure Drive Tour... I'm getting 15 -ish hrs out of it in my Gen 2 PS 18x20.

I don't remember if I posted this, or if I did where I did, but the 17 gauge Silver 7 Tour notched through and broke in my Pure Strike 16X19 after somewhere between 6 and 8 hours of use. I originally strung it at 46 pounds and it felt like it was at the high end of my preference. When I broke, I tried the same string at 48 pounds and that was too high. It made the racquet feel tinny and harsh, and when I swung hard and mis-hit high on the stringbed, the impact was jarring and felt flimsy. I cut the string out and put the S7T back in at 45 pounds and its much better, but maybe due to the fresh strings the launch angle seems even higher, and it was high before.

Yeah I agree, the launch angle is really high. This and the fact that the frame delivers a lot of power makes it really hard to keep balls in if you hit hard.

There seems to be a point where ramping up the swingspeed gets diminishing returns when trying to hit the ball flatter. Maybe it's a technique issue on my part but the racquet just seems to flex and flutter a bit on my hardest swings.
