Tennis Warehouse Playtest: Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022

I was able to spend 15 minutes with it, and it’s not like these. Needs weight. The layup is crisper. But I’m hoping I get the play test to really put one through its paces. I don’t get to customize the popular demos or hit with them much haha.

Same, really hoping to get in on this playtest too. Spec wise it be really close to what I'm looking for and what I useto use before I took a break from tennis. I'm still not to where I was pre hiatus but it's where I'm looking for a more demanding frame and that old feel from 10 years ago. Gotta try it before I can say what mods are needed tho.

I used pure storm tours for years and even got some pro stock control molds from a buddy who used to be high up with Babolat. They’re too anemic for me now, even at my specs. So the strike vs might be just what I need. It’s crisper for sure. And lowering the tension and adding weight probably alleviates the deadness of the tip. Would be fun to experiment!

That's strange. What does a racket have to do with a natural gut string?

It doesn't. It's just all branding and marketing. We all know VS strings from babolat and they recently just rebranded everything to be called RPM after Rafa's RPM blast. Prince used to put pro and tour on everything as well

My best guess would be denoting a line as "VS" like PAVS, PDVS, and PSVS signals that it is meant for top performers, with the "supreme" need for "victory."

The more die hard bab fans please correct me. I remember this loosely from the brandography.

The origin for 'VS' term is related to strings. The famous tennis Musketeers (French players Lacoste, Cochet, Brugnon & Borotra) worked alongside Albert Babolat in 1925 when demand for thinner and tigher gut started picking up. All of these players were given samples in alphabetical order (A, B, C, D and such) to try and give feedback. When they reached sample 'V' they all said V is superior. Hence the term VS. Chris covered that too in TW's Babolat Brandography.

May come as a surprise to some of the younger readers but Babolat came to the racquet game pretty late considering the family business started about 147 years ago and only introduced it's first racquet in the 90s.

After reading your post, when the reality kicks in that even the 90s was 30+ years ago....

o_Oo_O

No i cant be that old!

Yep. But we are talking about racquets rather than strings. So VS means "Special Version".

There is no suggestion that any VS version in the racquet model line is a "superior" version. Just different ... and special ;)

Well, I wasn't talking about racquets. I was talking about the origin of term 'VS' :)

And for racquets, I disagree. VS is just a moniker. It does not stand for 'Special Version' - that is a misconception. Babolat have not changed what VS stands for when it comes to racquets. Nowhere does Babolat or its reps suggest that is the case. In fact, use of VS in racquet line basically just means that Babolat has continued to use the designation it used originally for top quality strings, and has simply moved it for its racquet lines as well. All of this, frankly, is marketing.

But yes, the VS lines are geared more for performance oriented players. They are more player's frames (denser, smaller heads) than regular line frames offered and aimed at generally higher level players.

Directly from Babolat website:

The VS series is designed to take the regular model of the racquet but make subtle changes that performance players will benefit from. The series began with the Pure Drive VS in 2019, the Pure Aero VS followed in 2020, and now the set is completed with the Pure Strike VS, aimed at high-skilled attacking players whose game is built around taking the ball early and looking for maximum control and precision.

The ‘VS’ label emerged over the first 50 years of Babolat’s history. The French family-owned company began making strings for racquet sports in 1875, and each experiment at improving the gut was accompanied by two letters to denote the material and the trial number. In 1925 the VS emerged as the highest quality of gut string, and Babolat has used the name ever since, mainly for its original product of high-quality gut strings, but more recently for other top-of-the-range products, like racquets.

Also, when asked directly, the Babolat rep mentioned that:
VS is a moniker that refers back to the history of our strings.

Back in the late 19th/early 20th century, when we first created natural gut, we named each version/formulation with a letter, beginning with "A". Once we arrived at our best version up until that point, it was iteration "V". We knew that this was a special string, so we added "S" and called it "VS".

Since then, we've constantly worked to refine our strings, but the VS moniker has stuck. With the Pure Strike & Pure Aero lines, VS is a reference to our heritage and also differentiates those models from the rest of the family.

And for racquets, I disagree. VS is just a moniker. It does not stand for 'Special Version' - that is a misconception. Babolat have not changed what VS stands for when it comes to racquets.

By your own logic, we can agree to disagree.

The history is clear about the history of the VS monicker. The "S" means "Superior"

If you apply that logic to the VS racquets then there is an inference that they are "Superior" to the standard models in the same model lines. That is clearly not the case and would make absolutely no sense from a Sales and Marketing perspective. Why would anyone purchase the standard model if there is a "Superior" version available in the same model line for only a few dollars more?

I can imagine a Retail Store representative (or a Babolot Distributor representative for that matter) conforming to you logic ...

Sales Rep: "Well, here we have the standard Pure Aero / Pure Drive / Pure Strike. As you can see it has a range of features. By the way, we also has the Pure Aero / Pure Drive / Pure Strike VS. They are superior versions of the standard models."

Potential Purchaser: "If the VS models are superior. Then why would I buy the standard version. I much prefer to buy the superior version."

Sales Rep: "The VS models are superior. And because of that, they are a little more expensive".

Potential Purchaser: "In what way are they more superior to the standard models?"

Sales Rep: "They have smaller hoops."

Potential Purchaser: "Wait on. They are smaller racquets but they cost more?"

Sales Rep: Yes ... "Because the are superior."

Potential Purchaser: "Are the VS version made of the same stuff as the standard versions? And where are they made?"

Sales Rep: "Yes! same stuff. All of our racquets are manufactured in China."

Potential Purchaser: "Oh, OK. Then I will just buy the VS ones because they are superior to the standard versions. Would be silly to buy standard ones when I can get superior ones."

Sales Rep: "Excellent Choice! How many do you want?"

So I guess the demise of the standard PA, PD and PS is inevitable as every new player proceeds to purchase the VS "Superior" version! I mean why settle for second best when it comes to tennis racquets. Your game would never forgive you.

Will leave it to you to decide how much of this is tongue in cheek ;)

BTW, none of it matters anyway. Standard is Standard. VS is VS. And never the twain shall meet!

Anyone see the similarities between Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022 and the older Pure Controls? Both 16 x 20, Lower RA: 63 / 62, SW: 322 / 313 head size: 97 / 98 weight: 11.1 / 10.9.

There’s similarity for sure. Hitting side by side with one of my old pure storm tours, there was more pop, spin, and whippiness from the new one - expected being 10g lighter or whatever. Crisper in feel to me. It’s a player’s stick for sure but with a couple modern comforts in the form of a plusher sweet spot and more outgoing power. It’s still a feel-oriented players’ stick that puts out what you put in, though. I only spent 15-20 minutes with it, so hoping to get on the playtest and really put it through its paces.

the word was that Babolat had some prototype layups and molds out being tested and LOVED one. But they somehow lost the layup specs and had to reverse engineer it. Kind of a cool story!

Have you hit with the Swirly Controls (old circa 2001 Controls from before Storms) by any chance? Would love to hear your feedback and comparison with these new ones.

The swirly’s and team from ‘03 were stiffer and provided more pop than the storms and controls that followed. Hurt my wrist but were crazy nice. The new one has a little bit more of that but it’s by no means stiff. It’s most like the ‘07 carbon xtreme storms - played it next to one of those and a gt. But only for 20 minutes and not with the same strings or specs.

Thanks. Yeah, true. I got my first Swirly back when I loved Gonzalez and his forehand. Have two of those Controls custom painted and still in my collection. Far more stiffer and pop than Storms. Would absolutely obliterate the ball. Never liked the one generation of Control that followed after Storms though. They changed the name to Strike after that. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Guess I need to get a demo of these PSVS 2022. Cheers.

Pure Strike VS is very good. It has nice type of flex and feel is clean and not harsh like pure strike when you charge hard. A bit too high launch angle for my taste, but on the other hand it ensures effortless spin.

I see a lot of racquets in your signature, what's your current racquet of choice? (just trying to get sense of -- "too high launch angle for my taste")

Spot on, it is further allocation of a known Bab trademark in strings to racquet lines.

Yep it was gonzo for me too. The swirly’s and the 03 were amazing and crushed the ball but were too scarce for me when I discovered them. Played all of them through juniors and college. The control re-name from storm was nice for me. But the strike vs which was reportedly just a paint job didn’t get the job done. Stiff and uncomfortable with little feel. I want some more time with the new strike vs for sure. Here’s hoping it’s what I’ve been looking for.

Yeah, I used the Swirly + for over 4 years (still have no idea how I swung that thing...ah, to have a 30 yr old shoulder...). I'd say even the version of the Control that followed the Swirly was not as good. They took 10g out of it, and made it a tad softer (71 vs 68 for the '+' line).

I remember you mentioning that in the past. Yeah those + length ones were even bigger beasts. I mean 350+ swing weight on a stock stick does all the talking for sure.

The mold for all the Control line generations as well the Storms was the same if I'm not mistaken, just the layup changed making it softer/crisper, right? I think I remember fitting a new set of grommets for GT Storms on one of my older Controls but not sure if I'm confusing with some other racquet.

My friend, I know you have been a fan of the Pure Storms as well. Think you purchased a pretty expensive NOS too from overseas didn't you a few years back? We were both rekindling our PSTGT affairs at the time. Now I'm tempted to dust off mine and see what the fuss was about! Holic woes, haha.

Yeah the 98 molds are all the same. Just layup changes through the years. The pure strike vs grommets fit the older models and everything too.

Oh, for some reason I thought they changed the mold once they brought the Strike VS in those PO7 colors. Good to know, thanks.

Yeah, I had played with the PSTGT when the racquet came out probably a couple of years. I can't remember anymore why I moved on. Then 4 years ago or so I grabbed a pair of NOS from Germany, you're right :X3:

The only racquet I've bought full price when new since my DR98. All others have been 2nd hand finds. Due to arrive today/tomorrow from TW Europe and never been looking forward so much to hitting with anything. Although I used to use the Pure Storms for s short time when between 'regular' match racquets, I never have liked Babolat as a company mainly due to my dislike of the PD and APD (arm wreckers). But the specs on this VS look just perfect if set up with the right strings. Game on!
Same here. Customized mine to my specs, 327 grams unstrung, Swingweight 306. Wondering about the strings set up, my regular string is the Head lynx tour 1,25 but I would like to try something different for this frame, maybe an hybrid with nat gut..

Right now I use Prestige MID (93 sqi, 16x19) with no intention to switch. It doesn’t even have the lowest launch like six one 95 18 or even blade 18 or RS305. I was a bit suprised how high arched ball PSVS shot, more spin and angle than APD.
Still I suppose it would be pretty easy adaptation after some use, but of course it might affect negatively your 1st flat serve and limit your approaching ability to the net.

Is the grip size on this new Pure Strike VS running larger than most other manufacturers with the same said grip size? I know this has always been the case for Babolat rackets and was wondering if it were still the case in regards to this new PS VS?

The syntec base grips used to run really large...not as much anymore. They compact down pretty quickly too. This one with the leather is definitely true to size and will feel slightly smaller once it forms to the handle a bit.

I demoed the racquet with an L3 grip for about a week and it seemed like a standard L3 to me.
In another thread I posted a pic of the buttcap with a Wilson and Head racquet. This was more to compare the shape, however.

If it's a good leather grip it may compress some with use, as I find this to be the case with my Fairway leather grips.

In my past experience the babolat leather has been very good. All of my pure storms had babolat leather added and I really remember liking the feel.

Attention message boarders,

Emails just went out to the selected playtesters! The playtests have gotten extremely popular which is so exciting but makes it so hard to choose just a couple out of all that applied.

If you were selected, congrats and please respond to the email!

If you were not selected, thank you for applying. We already have playtests lined up for the next couple months and our goal is to try and get as many people on a playtests as possible. So please keep applying.

Thanks so much,
TW Staff

Didn't get in this one as well. Anyway, good luck to others and look forward to reading playtesters reviews.

Glad to be part of this review, I am looking forward to it. Hopefully, the racquet will ship quickly as the reviews are due by June 3.

Thank you TW!
Also a part of this Playtest!! Looking forward to seeing what these Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022s are all about! I have dabbled in a lot of Babolat racquets and truth be told - I have found things I like about them all. The thing I don't like is usually the stiffness, which is why I am particularly interested in these VS models.
I'll keep you all posted !!

Mine is supposed to ship from CA to CA in 1-5 days! After reading up on these a little bit it seems to have even more characteristics that I like in a racquet than I realized initially.
I have loved playing with Babolat Pure Storms in the past and more recently Pure Strikes, but always thought a bit heavier and a lower RA would be nice! Of the several rackets I have been playing recently (Pure Strike 98 16x19, Yonex VCore 97 Duel G 330 16 x 20 , and the Blade 104 18x19 27.5" & 60 RA) this seems to have the flex of the Blade 104, the string pattern of the Duel G and the Maneuverability, power & SW of the Pure Strike. If that is the case this will be an awesome racquet (for me). The only other thing I could ask for is an Extended or Plus Version if I were designing a racquet for myself. Great color scheme too !

Will keep everyone posted as soon as it gets here!
